and indulge in a mass episode of feeling sorry for yourself.... but in all seriousness. I've been doing some new tracks recently and it's not that I think they're poor, it's just I can't quite pull off what I'm trying to do, and it's getting really infuriating. I'm sure others feel the same at times. I just wondered how you went about things when you get to that point. Do you work and work and work until you achieve what you want, or do you take some time out and then go back to it. or something different perhaps?

so yeah ive been mixing with ableton live for a few months now, and was thinking should i start to dj with it at partys and things, because that would be cool. It seems there is quite a difference between mixing in my bedroom and djing in a live environment, or is there? if anyone has any experiance with this id quite like a chat, my msn address is Im 17 so it would be for house partys and shit, so i was thinking some quite dancible music, maybe some dmx krew that sort of thing, or maybe lots of diff songs mixed via breaks and stuff. Thanks in advance.

Graphics cards in relation to running audio apps

I've been having a problem with my pc for some time now that is really starting to hold me back. My machine is less than a year old and i had it custom build with the following basic spec; * p4 3 gig chip * 2gb ram * 200 gb HDD * 2mb cache dvd drive and usual shit anyway The damn thing keeps restarting itself and its mostly when i'm running audio applications like logic or reaktor and plugins and stuff. It happens sometimes with other stuff too but mostly its with audio apps. I can be tweaking a plugin or just loading an instrument or something and the screen will freeze and then the machine instantly restarts itself as though i had just press…

Has anyone tried the adobe soundbooth preview? I just switched from PC to a macbook and need something like audition for multitrack recording but can't find anything that fits the bill... has anyone tried logic pro for this type of thing? I downloaded it and it looks fucking well difficult for recording real instruments...

I've been loading up Audiorealism Bassline (gotta build my x0xb0x #218) in everything I write recently. I noticed that I rarely use the Sawtooth. I just feel like I can more expressiveness out of the Square, I can hardly get a whistle out of the resonance with the saw. What's your favorite?

Field recording mics
by Guest Dr. Elemeno von Hat X: PhD- 8 replies

So, I'm interested in going out to record noises of subways and AC compressors, and whatnot. I have a decent portable mini-disc recorder which I think will do just fine for recording things, but I don't have any mics that'll do the job. I'm looking for a small, portable mic. Nothing like an SM58 with XLR, nothing that needs a preamp. Maybe battery powered? Stereo would be nice. The minidisc has 1/8" in. I do not have much money. I saw vsnares using this one, in a rig which would be remarkably similar to mine, if I had the same minidisc recorder. What is this mic? Is it expensive?

I would assume your box transmits sysex? Have you tried just recording the parameter change from your synth, and then modifying the recorded message to your needs? That's usually what I do instead of trying to figure it all out; have the thing do it for me. Done it in Max plenty of times...

so got to thinking... most electronica heads generally feel that innovation is the fulcrum of what makes the music good. eg, autechre's morphing beats, squarepusher's funky chops, aphex's complete re-invention of music from the ground up, boc's carefully and meticulously degraded sounds. but, i personally feel that a good tune wins out over and above the 'pushing the envelope' thing. now of course, all of the above mentioned are very capable of sublime melodies and chord progressions. my point is that there are many people who try to do the whole bleeding edge thing with electronics, and it amounts to fuck all because there's no musical; or emotional c…

how about an album (ep?) made by as many people on watmm that want to participate. basically, every software would make a separate track, so there'd be an fl studio track, a reason track, etc. someone posts the start up thing for that software, other people download it, change it, repost it, and the cycle continues until some arbitrary point in time I'll start fl studio zipped loop file, a sort lil ambient thing I made about a year ago, would work as an intro to a song. http://blacknoise.f2o.org/mp3/627.zip

using ReWire w/Reason 3.0.5 and Logic Pro 7.2.3

This is the first crack I've had at setting Logic up to accept Reason ReWire tracks... it's a little new to me at the moment.. does anyone have any advice on setting it up? All I want to do is port some old Reason songs (back from the days of having nothing else. hehe) into Logic for further processing into, you know, something that sounds good. :)

OK, so I get back from work a few days ago and find my housemate at the computer puzzling over Traktor. He's reinstalled the program for some reason (error messages popped up every now and then when closing the program).... however, somehow he has managed to completely destroy all the saved BPM's :getlost: Here's what we have when I open the program. Regarding our list of files, some of them have the correct BPM (a minority). Some have reverted to 00.000 and can be re-analysed by the program. Most, however, display a rounded figure that looks totally off (128 bpm for breakcore tracks, etc), the problem being I can't seem to lose these figures - when I attempt to re…

PA's and monitoring
by Guest LJG- 6 replies

Squee's thread made me think about this but I didn't want to hijack it... Is it conceivable that a regular PA system could be used for the composition process, the way that studio monitors are? Having been a guitarist for a couple of decades, I'm used to a mentality that your amp is part of your sound, so if you were to record anything, you'd be miking your amp, rather than running direct. Or at least that was one approach. In electronic work, humble though my gear is, I have a very live approach- and I tend to think if my work got to the point where I wanted it recorded, I'd probably want to mic speakers and such. So would it be viable to use a PA exclusiv…

Hello WATMM, I have a friend who's studying music tech and is new to the exciting world of midi and synthesis He's just getting his teeth into Reaktor but doesn't have his own copy yet, but would love a PDF copy of the manual so he can get started on that I thought I'd ask here for him because this seems like the sort of place to find one Cheers!

What is the best way to go about having samples which can have their start point varied? At the moment Im doing something with some singing, I sliced up the recording in recycle so each slice is maybe a few seconds long, and loaded it in NN19... then put the sample start knob on the velocity settings to max. So when the velocity is zero the slice plays from the start. But when the velocity is at maximum, the sample plays from somewhere in the middle, and I dont know how to make it start from any later. I dont want to use shorter slices because it will fuck up the singing Any help appreciated, if Im not making sense let me know that as well...
