Agreed!

jeez, most idm if you want to call it that no matter how "analogue" it sounds is made on a computer with whatever is lying around and amassed on a hard drive, sure they own some synths and they have used them probably in at least a few of their songs,

christ add some software reverb to any synth or keyboard or sample or anything and if you keep at it and find the right sounding pads its gonna remind you of boards of canada,

most of these guys dont have piles and piles and piles of gear, they just have up to date computers with lots of software... thats the secret.

besides i wouldnt be surprised if the boards duo secretly set up all that old crappy gear to throw everyone off. hell they might not even be using it, it could just be for show.

I'm with you there. Aside from mastering you can get almost anything you need with very little. I would say you don't even need a good computer either. Their junk shop is probably there so if they "got a sound in their head" and they want it now they can just grab it off the wall, like coconut shells or whatever.

But, it is finer to have something physically to "play" it so you have total control instead of fighting a static sample from the internet or something with an editor.

well, BOC are quite hardcore about their use of analogue equipment. The equipment you see in those pictures is nothing at all, that's a bare minimum midi setup that any electronic band would use to perform an AV show, (if you don't want to use laptops) and obviously not an indication of what they write with. Nobody in their right mind would bring vintage analogue equipment on tour!

lol, saying you can get any analog tone on a computer with enough tinkering. That's funny stuff.

I think it's possible to come very very close to achieving an analog sound using soft synths, but they seem to be lacking the power and punch of an analog synth. I have yet to hear any software moog emulator that can produce the punchy sub bass type sounds from my vintage Moog.

They've said in interviews that they use analog synths and don't use soft synths.

But then again, they're probably trying to throw you off from their secret maniacal agenda to create completely digital music passed off as analog.

Where I posted me doing the Roygbiv bass line on my MC202 which is equivalent citcuitry to the SH-101 BOC probably use.

The CS1x could never be mistaken for a CS01 or CS80. Maybe it looks a bit like the AN1x or CX6x but I reckon that's a 1x on stage doing mater keyboard duties.

In some of the other pictures there's a flight case with the lid half open. Could be 101 in there and you can hear some live 101 sounds on some of the concert bootlegs. They're pretty robust for gigging so no trouble there.

disagreed...you can hear the diff with analogue and compy music. compy is too fuckin clean, and generally thinner sounding.

BUT...i do notice a diff from geo to headphase. to me it feels as though the analgoue was put aside for more sofware on this one. i could be and am probably wrong, but it just doesnt have the warmth and fatness. thats what me ear tells me anyways.

as for that blue sythn, the shape leads me to believe its a nordlead painted blue, but the in/outs are on the wrong side. unless its modded ;). too big for a 101. those guys are small.

oh and software verb isnt nearly as good sounding as a dedicated unit.

if delays were so robust on the compy why does the boss delay pedal hold such high value, while all the other pedals pale in comparisson. why do they continue to sell verb hardware for outrageous prices? why is an sh101 now found on ebay for $1000?

compys are for homebrew, helps get your start. you should see the underworld studio and the fila brazillia studio....808 state. they do use compys for building and registering...but a lot of the sounds come from outside of the flat screen.

dont feel jealous...knock out a dance hit to make some cash, then when you get some buckers you can get some gear.

anyways...no matter how sick the gear, if you dant have the talent its not gonna make good music for you.

im sure Ae could make sick tracks with spoons, pots and pans and a 4track.

total....$40ebay.

so :(. seen em for $800 at big city music [vintage gear] and up to 1g on ebay. CRAZY!

its the only piece of gear i have thats appreciated in value. my akai samplers WERE $400 when i bought em used. i sold one for $30 and had to give the other away. it costs more to ship it then its sale price.

I'm loath to get involved in any software vs hardware, analogue vs digital debates, especially in this subforum, but anyway, some thoughts...

BoC just have an up to date computer with lots of software? What was their 90's output written with? Generator? Idiot.

There are plenty of digital, as opposed to analogue, hardware synths , and I can think of at least one that provides key BoC sounds.

Anybody who talks about analgue vs digital purely within the paradigm of warmth and fatness vs thin, hasn't got a clue what they're talking about. For example, one of the things that analogue can arguably still do better than software is harsh, aggresive and 'thin' sounds. FM synthesis is pefectly capable of 'warmth' and 'punch' and other cliches, and often does it better than analogue.

BoC are known for their love of Akai samplers. When I think about the sound design on the first couple of albums I think resampling through akai samplers. I could be wrong, and I'm not denying analogue is used, but I'm certainly not thinking about a wall of analogue synths connected directly to a wax cylinder.

And while were here, I may as well try and put another BoC cliche to rest that kind of stems from that whole analogue myth rubbish. Boc sound rubbish on vinyl. With the possible exception of the Geogaddi promo, none of the vinyl releases are up to scratch, the pressings are awful, particularly the coloured vinyl. I'd like to hear the albums on 180gm, but I reckon they'd still sound best on CD.

ha ha ha yer funny. ya software has range...the shits too clean and too perfect. and comps...real ones sound better than any plug ive tried to date. soft reverb and delay dont seem as good. though better than they have been in past years. logic has a nice reverb.

yes....the vinyl warp have had the boc cut on has been pretty cheap. my trans canada highway is really cheap quality. i think it was thinner than the standard 120g.

i have an sh101 and an sh101 plug. a juno 106 and the plug.....VERY different. there is a difference pulling your sounds in via cable than a digitized emulation. its clearly audible.

but thanks for letting me know i havent a clue.

vsti's are handy in that they are affordable. i dont see myself ever owning a cs-70m, but did buy the cs-80v. its fun to mess with. also, being able to save presets is huge. something youre not doing with an ms-10 or any modular. hell, the sh101 for that matter.

and you save SO much room with vsti's. i was considering dumping all my shit and just using vsti's as i dont think im good enough to merit using real gear at this point. but there is something about being able to be hands on, and turning knobs and setting by hand than with a mouse. the music feels more dynamic. its just more fun too.

then there is the recording side of it. compy recording = FUCKING CLIPPING and over compressing. i just like going to tape cuz you can saturate it. but i prob get all kinda of clipping on my compy cuz i have no skills.

but for mr grumpy pants, i wasnt knocking vsti's, they open to the doors to SO many. and they are fun to werk with too. i just maintain that analogue gear has a richer more lively feel. or at least thats what my ears tell me.

just one question though...why, if you so loath diving into or perpetuating a thread that upsets you....do you take the time to do so. and in turn take pot shots a those in the thread. it WAS a discussion and has now been put on another path.

thanks again.

idk

they say they only use analog.. but in this day that is very hard to believe. if it's true, well that's awesome, but to me, Geogaddi sounds like Reason (beach at redpoint, sunshine recorder esp).. and Campfire is them getting more organic than ever with hardly any software. and TCH sounds totally analog.. but then again, detuning and micropitch shifting are very possible within software. it's almost impossible to tell.

thats interesting. i find the albums up to and including beautiful place sound analogue, while tch and good chunks of geo sound software [save for the guitar].

regardless....whatever was used sounds freakin great.

its like pillows for your ear bones.

God I love the BOC subforum. I really don't know where to start. Against my better judgement I'll continue to play ball, although I'm pretty sure there's a dupe in this thread.

Right, let's just suppose for one moment you're correct. Reason was first released at the end of 2000. Geogaddi was released Feb 2002. So that's a little over a year. So notoriously perfectionist, slow working, and hardware using BOC completely ditched their previous working method and adopted Reason 1.0, and bearing in mind all of the other work and time by the label that goes into releasing an album, managed to come up with Geogaddi in a matter of months. Wow.

Please find a quote where they say they only use analogue?

This is all received opinion. And not even coherent. That quote about clipping... are you JSwift's retarded brother's dupe?

The reason I'm taking pot shots is because soem of the people involved in the discussion were not only talking nonesense, but were attempting to sound like they had a depth of knowledge or experience that they simply do not possess, by repeating received opinion and cliches.

people keep bringing up Reason when talking about the boc. i made an assumption and wasnt correct.

you are still a fucking douche bag though.
