Should I take a full-time job

Ok guys.

Maybe some of you can help me. I almost was going to post this in the first world problems thread, but I figured I needed some quick advice.

Ever since relocating, I've had a tough time getting my freelance career clicking in the new town. Only recently, after over 2 years, has it really felt like it's been picking up. Just a little.

Anyway, just yesterday, I got a job offer from literally out of the blue (technically, through a friend of a friend of a friend) for a full-time position doing work that I am skilled in, but it's basically content that I couldn't care less about.

The money is pretty good (lets just say its over $50k but less than $100k), comparatively, but I've been freelancing for 10 years and I have a petrifying fear of long-term work commitment.

They made me an offer yesterday, but want to know my answer TODAY! I haven't even met these people or interviewed with them and there is a good chance they want me to start tomorrow, Sunday, labor day weekend.

My bet is that is will be a MINIMUM of 40 hours a week. I'm not sure if I'll get overtime, because it is a salary job.

There are a few red flags, obviously, but my finances have been thoroughly obliterated over the past couple years and I could really use the money.

I could always take the job and quit if I hate it, but something in my gut says I shouldn't take myself off the market, even if for a couple months, because it has taken so much time to make slight traction as a freelancer.

This is a tough call.

What complicates this further is that my wife wants kids and only has a few years til she turns 40. She's a little older than me. No way could I think of having kids with the shitty money I'm making, compounded with massive debt.

Basically, should I sell my soul for security?

I'm stressing. Try to keep replies serious please.

Forgiveness

do you tend to forgive people rather easily? are there people that you have vowed, never to forgive?

sometimes, as i sit and think of the people that i've emotionally or physically wounded, or that have emotionally or physically wounded me, in my past, it is almost as though they beckon to me, to either ask for their forgiveness or to give mine.

tunnels and funnels, spirals, lattices

"What geometric visual hallucinations tell us about the visual cortex"

Abstract

Many observers see geometric visual hallucinations after taking hallucinogens such as LSD, cannabis, mescaline or psilocybin; on viewing bright flickering lights; on waking up or falling asleep; in "near-death" experiences; and in many other syndromes. Klüver organized the images into four groups called form constants: (I) tunnels and funnels, (II) spirals, (III) lattices, including honeycombs and triangles, and (IV) cobwebs. In most cases, the images are seen in both eyes and move with them. We interpret this to mean that they are generated in the brain. Here, we summarize a theory of their origin in visual cortex (area V1), based on the assumption that the form of the retino-cortical map and the architecture of V1 determine their geometry. (A much longer and more detailed mathematical version has been published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, 356 [2001].) We model V1 as the continuum limit of a lattice of interconnected hypercolumns, each comprising a number of interconnected iso-orientation columns. Based on anatomical evidence, we assume that the lateral connectivity between hypercolumns exhibits symmetries, rendering it invariant under the action of the Euclidean group E(2), composed of reflections and translations in the plane, and a (novel) shift-twist action. Using this symmetry, we show that the various patterns of activity that spontaneously emerge when V1's spatially uniform resting state becomes unstable correspond to the form constants when transformed to the visual field using the retino-cortical map. The results are sensitive to the detailed specification of the lateral connectivity and suggest that the cortical mechanisms that generate geometric visual hallucinations are closely related to those used to process edges, contours, surfaces, and textures.

really interesting subject and quite IDM

full article:

http://people.mbi.ohio-state.edu/golubitsky.4/reprintweb-0.5/output/papers/6120261.pdf

Post your Diets, Lifehacks, Biohacks, Keys to Operating at a High Level

So, recently I have had a sort of revelation concerning the way we live and the way we are expected to operate. It is blatantly obvious that we are living at odds with our environment. Most people recognize this to some extent, but a lot of people don't have solutions that work. I know this, because I struggled for a long time only to be beaten down by what felt like a never ending cycle of failure. Not because I wasn't trying hard enough, or because I wasn't being disciplined. It was because I was misinformed. We are all misinformed to some degree or another. Why? The simple answer is that research is flawed, and we get fed lies due to private interests. (simple answer ) We used to be at the mercy of this information before the internet, but thankfully honest research and the free flow of information is liberating us all. I'm strictly speaking in a nutritional and environmental context as far as this topic is concerned. So, overarching political philosophies are not really meant for this thread. I definitely think that they are related, but I believe they are part of a different conversation.

I made this thread, because I've been doing stuff that really works for me, and it excites me. So, I decided to share what is working for me, and also many others. I welcome everyone to share information, and also share contradictory information as well. I'm not an expert on anything, and I don't pretend to be. I've literally only been doing this for a few months. A lot of this will be anecdotal based on reviewing some minor research. I know there are some actual educated folk in here as well, and I bet they have some good insights.

So, yeah you've been lied to. Some of the simple things that people misinformed about:

Salt is bad for you and will give you high blood pressure.

- Your body needs salt and you will die without it. the high blood pressure mania is based on research led by big pharma.

Red meat is bad for you and will give you cholesterol and heart attacks.

- Conventionally raised red meat is bad for you and will kill you

Fat is bad for you and will give you cholesterol and heart attacks.

-fat is good for you and aids your body in high level functioning and energy. Fat from bad sources is bad for you.

You need to limit your calories. (especially to lose weight)

-if you are eating the right things you can literally eat as much as you want and still lose weight.

You need to exercise to gain muscle and get trim.

-if you are eating the right things you will gain muscle and lose fat without exercise.

Things you've might have dealt with that you thought there wasn't any solution to. Eventually, conditioned to believe this is just life:

I can't do anything about my allergies.

My body type won't allow me to be leaner.

I never have enough energy.

I can't get any smarter.

I can't focus.

I'm depressed.

I need to medicate to deal with my anxiety.

I'm always hungry.

Ok, so what I've suffered from:

Allergies(a long time)

Constant sinus infections (5+ years)

Headaches(a long time)

Intense joint pain/inflammation(5 years)

Store too much fat regardless of exercise( entire life)

fatigue/no energy/constant hunger(entire life)

poor sleep/not feeling rested(entire life)

bad focus (diagnosed with ADHD)/ brainfog(entire life only recently to manifest itself at a much higher intensity)

trouble getting lean and building muscle(entire life)

Depression(as a product of overall inability to operate)

Anxiety(entire life/worsening recently)

I have in about 2 months cured myself of most of these problems using diet and supplementation, and all of them are at least improving.

I was going to go through each of these issues individually, but it would make this post far too long. So, I'm going to summarize.

I eat a high fat diet with almost zero processed foods. The diet is meant to increase your ability to detoxify, increase muscles, reduce fat and inflammation, and avoid mycotoxins. I think Uniret said it is termed Ketogenic.

It is illustrated here. It updates all the time so this is probably out of date.

http://www.bulletproofexec.com/the-complete-illustrated-one-page-bulletproof-diet/

I don't follow it 100% but I do most of it.

I drink butter coffee with MCT oil everyday. Try it. It is F'ing amazing. The long and short of it is that you should avoid almost all coffee. Be very strict about what kind of coffee you drink. Most coffee is poorly made and manufactured and you are literally just dosing yourself with toxins. The butter and MCT oil just give loads of fat which is great for energy and brain function, and allow you not to have to eat all the time. Sometimes I don't eat until the evening, because I don't need to.

I eat only organic grassfed grass finished meat. I eat mostly beef, pork, and eggs. The eggs I eat are not 100% bulletproof either because they are expensive as hell.

Conventionally raised meat is bad for you. For a number of reasons. You shouldn't eat it. You can eat as much properly raised meat as you want. It isn't hurting you. It is actually really good for you. DON't burn your meat and if you do burn it add an antioxidant to it beforehand to avoid the release of carcinogens.

I drink Himalayan salt added to water in the morning when I wake up. Supposedly, it helps your body from having to convert the potassium it makes when you are trying to sleep into sodium for you in the morning when you wake-up. Basically, making it so your body doesn't have to do that work, and your adrenal system ends up having more resources to provide you with energy for the rest of the day. That is a super laymen summary, but the idea is there.

I basically only eat meat and veggies, rice, and quinoa. Spices aren't necessarily bulletproof because most of them are poorly manufactured/prone to mold and fungus, but I love spices.

I eat at least 70% pure cocao chocolate. I prefer 85%. Sometimes a bar a day, but usually about half a bar.

I supplement. I would supplement more, but it is expensive.

I take:

a multivitamin (because I'm lazy. Multivitamins are shitty and you would be better off taking individual supplements)

krill oil (better than fish oil)

a probiotic

vitamin E

activated charcoal (removes toxins from your body. when someone OD's they give them charcoal at the hospital)

B-vitamins

Chlorella

For focus (this is meant to simulate the effects of the brain drug provigil/modafinil that many high level execs take):

Artichoke extract

Forskolin extract

You can also take for focus:

Bacopa & Huperzine A

at night I take:

magnesium

potassium

5htp/L-tryptophan

melatonin (needs to be regulated or it is risky)

L-ornithine

My sleep is very good and I don't have problems falling asleep like I have my entire life.

Things I've noticed:

Burning fat and building muscle without exercise or any changes in physical activity. An overall reduction in body fat.

More rested, better sleep. better regulated sleep patterns.

Way more energy/sustained energy

No allergies/sinus problems(used to take allergy medicine everyday/had to use eyedrops multiple times a day/constant sinus infections)

Joint pain is gone (my joint pain was literally so bad that it would wake me up at night or I couldn't sit through a movie without being in 8/10 levels of pain)

better focus/easier to think/not at a loss for words, etc.

Not depressed because I can operate at a high level

anxiety is improving

Oh, also I've gone from being 145 lbs (underweight) at age 18 to being 195 lbs (overweight) at age 24 to now being at a healthy 170 lbs or so. I don't exercise consistently and I spend most of my days in front of a pc. My bodyfat percentage is really low now and I've always struggled to get it that way thinking that it was just my natural body type. You would be amazed how much you think is fat is just inflammation.

There is a lot of other stuff I know about that I would like to try and other things that I can explain or defend if anyone shows an interest.

I would also like to hear anything anyone else does that works for them. I know Uniret does a lot of the things I'm doing, and I really enjoy talking about it and learning from other people.

I would also like to add that you shouldn't discount how much your anxiety and depression are related to your overall health, inflammation, and toxins in your body.

A game for my mom

So, my mom has been playing solitaire poker the last few months and I asked her if she wanted to play something new and better and she went yes. So I started thinking that there are like a million games out there, but I never played any of those sunday ones, that are basically made for housewives.

Can you suggest some for me? She is not too bright a person, but not stupid either. She clicks really slow, so no action. She probably hates violence and porn so don't go there...

It would be better if it was a standalone game then a browser one, though it's not that big a problem.

Thanks.

"There were horrific scenes in Penryn on Friday when a man chopped his ding-a-ling* off with a kitchen knife in front of horrified onlookers. The 43-year-old man, who lives in the town, could be seen running along Mutton Row at around 8.45pm, allegedly naked. He then brandished the knife and cut off his ding-a-ling*, before collapsing to the ground. A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said paramedics arrived just before 9pm the man was “bleeding heavily” and had fallen unconscious when they found him. The police received the initial call from a member of the public, to say there was concern for a man. A spokesperson confirmed that there was no one else involved in the incident. The man was taken by land ambulance to the emergency department at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, where he was later described as being in a “stable” condition. His injuries are not thought to the life threatening. It is thought the man may suffer from a mental health issue. It is understood that two women saw the incident unfold and ran terrified to a nearby house, where a man took them in and called the police."

New consoles/E3 2013 thread

I know it's a little early to make a E3 thread, but tomorrow the new Xbox will be revealed. So maybe we could discuss that in this thread.

It has of course been heavily rumored that the next Xbox will be required to be always-online to play games, and it is almost a certainty at this point. While I can understand that from a business perspective, I think it's incredibly stupid, and it will most likely led me to jump on PS4 wagon next generation, even though I've been a massive fan of the 360. And I really liked what I saw at the PS4 reveal, and it seems Sony is really trying hard to appeal the "core" gamers (I hate that term).

Plus the Xbox reveal will probably be 65% kinect wank, 20% new useless applications, 10% time-exclusive DLC and 5% games. I really hate the direction they are going, they should really try to appeal to the early adopters of a new console this time, instead of all those things we really don't care about.

you can't be serious. you realize that deadmau5 is playing music he has written himself, right? what he does doesn't compare to what a dj does insofar as it is about 1,000,000x cooler and requires 1,000,000x more talent than djing.

(a little tip for the kids: DJING IS EASY AS FUCK. any idiot can do it with a bit of practice. now sit down and try to write a track that doesn't sound like it was written on a calculator )

that being said, I don't like deadmua5's music either, but I have a ton of respect for an artist that can captivate huge audiences playing exclusively original material.

So, I work in an office but I'm trying to listen to the fresshist IDMs at all times. Problem is, many of them I can't even listen to because they're too loud / have to much high end / one way or another people around me are hearing and getting annoyed. Also, the earbuds I have are really unbalanced, and have no volume control. I've found my mp3 player never really outputs 0 volume even with vol set all the way down, which has been a problem as well, preventing me from listening to basically all vsnares entirely!

SO, any suggestions for high quality, good sound, no sound leak at all earbuds? Am I just chasing the headphone dragon???
