Agreed. Though I can think of three games that thankfully managed to avert this:

1. ICO. The entire game is escorting but it actually improves the experience.
2. Dead Rising 2. You can arm up the people you're escorting and create ad hoc kill squads. Great fun.
3. RE4. Having Ashley hide in bins or wear a suit of armour was a good call.

Farmers Almanac: pick a crop, grow it, harvest it, hire a ship crew and sail to foreign lands to trade, hunt for stowaways and then fist fight them.

i also played silent hill 4 which had some unintentionally hilarious escorting.

SH4 would have probably been my second favourite had it not been for escorting whatserface everywhere and constantly being pursued by Walter towards the end. I like to take in a SH game, not be on the run.
