Yeah High On Fire are fucking awesome. I like them more than Sleep, actually. Mostly because their songs are fast and kinda proggy, and not just the usual stoner riffing.

*reopens Doom/Stoner investigation case files*

What non-doom/stoner metal bands do you dig?

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Artificial Brain, WITTR, Altar of Plagues, Panopticon, Saor and Godflesh. So mostly less than trve Black Metal and a hint of Technical Death Metal.

Finally getting around to some of last year's better Metal records, I'm really digging the Mutilation Rites jawn and Tekeli-Li by The Great Old Ones.

What are some other underappreciated gems (i.e. not Panopticon or Behemoth) from '14?

grew up in complete metal/thrash/hardcore overload....everything from Maiden to Napalm Death, AC/DC to Minor Threat. More & more If it didnt chug deeeep it wasnt anything to experience. Tune your guitar dowwwn, so you could get moar chugggggg. A great introduction to valve amps, electronics of sound & vinyl records. Infinite concerts, tinnitus fatigue come to Butthead.

records/tunes

Reign in fuckin Blood....its the heaviest album of all time. NOTHING equals it, nothing. A few have got close,,,,,but then its slight stylistic deviations away or down-tuning again like Carcass, or maybe just maybe ND's Scum & From Enslavement to Obliteration. Their guitar sound was seriously under-rated and that was the cross-over point for bands like DRI, Corrosion of Conformity & SOD.

Maiden have to be the ultimate metal band. When you're 10/11/12 yrs old and you discover 666 the number of the beast, from then on fire & whatever it was were absolutely born to be released.

I love Hawkwind, they're total space rock so technically dont qualify, but Silver Machine was surely a contender for early metal militia?

Its late but b4 sleep Motorhead's Ace of Spades is unsurpassed for total metal sound.

thought Kreator had it going on for a couple of albums in the mid-late 80's, up to about Terrible Certainty, early Sepultura too......the tragedy is I swapped most of my olde metal/thrash/cross-over albums for a block of draw some time around 1988. Idiot.

You can find that Scott Ian show as a stand-up routine/torrent......i nearly bailed after about 15mins, but THEN the cunt goes deeeeeeeeep metal and his anecdotes of meeting Lemmy & touring with other bands are properly funny.

metal in life anecdote: if the morning has been rushed "Reign in Blood" on the way into work driving absolutely sets the right tone for the rest of the day

Doublename: if you haven't tried Animals As Leaders' 'The Joy Of Motion' I highly recommend it. Perhaps my metal record of last year.

Also I can't remember if I've mentioned it yet but a great bandcamp album is Ghost by Anup Sastry. High high recommends. All the guitars are digital but drums are real.

Seconded on Joy of Motion! Excellent album. Such insane musicianship in that band.

Not much into metal anymore these days except for slow, heavy stuff bas(s)ically. Still, there was a tidbit of excitement when I saw the first Arcturus track in 10 years posted just now:

Loved their stuff back in the day and saw them live in 2005 and will see them again after 10 years next month just for tradition sake, but I'm afraid this doesn't do a lot for me...

I'm really into bands like Clutch, CKY, QOTSA and Graveyard as well, but I think that stuff's more rock than metal.

edit- come to think of it, that first Uncle Acid track is probably classed as rock. They do have some doomy stuff though, so s'all good.

That my friend, is one of the most perfect posts of all time. And on an IDM forum makes it even greater.

Top marks!

I'm going to this, there's metal and stuff at it.

Oh, Botanist will play. I like him.

Not sure if he's mentioned in this thread already. He's basically a one man band that does drum + amplified dulcimer while singing about how plants will take over the world and destroy humanity.

You lucky dog, such an insane line up every year and the whole city is covered with freaks for a week. Not really my cup of tea this year though, except for Virus and Urfaust. And yes, Botanist!
