Dear copyright industry, I'm a pirate. I'm the typical user you are fighting. I'm downloading everything and not giving you one single penny. I don't even attend concert. You hate me and it's reciprocal. ...

... Every penny I will give you will be used against me. Firstly, by making it difficult for me to use what I buy. Zoned DVDs, encrypted movies on the DVD requiring illegal software to be read under Linux or DRM to be sure I'm not able to listen to a CD.

Worst, you will use my money to sue me in court because I would have downloaded something that I didn't want to buy anyway! With the change left, you will pay lobbyists to ensure the governments make stupid and dangerous laws.

Do you want me to pay lawyers to sue myself and lobbyists to make laws to send me in jails? Really? ...

a pretty good essay:

Can't wait til the major labels are gone and there are only the people left making music as an end in itself, as it should be. Everybody knows you can still make reasonably good money with music anyway. Look at all the small electronic music labels, I know enough DJs/producers or bosses of really small labels who still get far enough income from just making the music they love, selling it to the few who actually care about it (and will always continue to do) and booking for concerts/clubs. Music as a whole will be far better when all the people are gone who are just in it for the big money.

edit: I'm not an apologetic of stealing good music (even though i do it), but IMHO the whole piracy thing isn't even a bad thing for art.

The first thing that comes to my mind is that the divisions caused by this discussion are more generation related issues than anything else..

It's funny that when reading the comments on that thread one can spot all the confessed pirates getting by his side. This is the real sad thing: to see people showing themselves proud of being  pirates (whatever this means) without even trying to understand the whole thing, or the consequences of what they are doing, independently from being good or bad.
again, this might just be a question of generation and education

when I was that guy's age, I had to beg my mom to buy me the House of Pain CD at Blockbuster Music because it had the parental advisory sticker on it.

I'm not gonna go on a huge pro-piracy rant, but basically if it was suddenly banned completely I wouldn't start buying more music, I'd just listen to significantly less new music. And the music I would buy would probably be stuff that let you listen to the whole album for free anyway.

If you put out a product that is worth buying, I will buy it.  If you then make it difficult for me to enjoy my purchase, I will respond with ballistics.

That makes it easier. Bullets make everything easier.

What the hell kind of pirates are these, anyway? At least use a sword.
