me-purchase a Blu Ray of popular movie with free online version that is "downloadable off the disk".
downloads the free online version to find that I must first register and sign up for 3 or 4 seperate entities to confirm I can watch the version I have on the disc I just bought.
vs.
downloading for free on the internet in high quality without any of the bullshit.
2nd example:
I don't buy a copy of The Dark Knight so I am forced to sit through 6 seperate commercials on why piracy is bad, especially when these commercials are FUCKING UNSKIPPABLE.
Pirate away, pirates.

Usually I can't enjoy an album on the first listen, but even if I did, I wouldnt buy them all because like most people I ain't got the coin to do so. And even If I was rich, I still wouldnt buy them all. The real artists allways lose in this process.

This almost my mindset to a tee (apart from the facebook, I'm too old to take on another time-suck), although I'm slightly more optimistic about the outlook for real artists.
The glut of music (and all media/entertainment) out there now for consumption is so unfathomably huge though, they're aren't enough hours in the day. I just try to find the niches that are quality and appeal to my tastes, and support the artists making the music to the extent I can.

Though I do think that part of why I prate movies is because I hate how every dvd now forces you to watch a billion previews. Fuck you I want to watch the movie. With a downloaded movie you start the film right away. Sure there are adds on the torrent sites but it's not like they're all in your face. Oh and I don't have to worry about having a shelf full of dvd cases. Or dragging them around when I move. Nor do I have to worry about scratching them up, leaving them out for the cat to poop on, etc. They all sit on one hard drive.
The main reason I pirate is because it's convenient. Though I still have to buy CDs once in a while because I can't find everything online. Sometimes it's easier to call the dudes at my record shop and place an order and let them do all the work. But seriously. When somebody says "hey check out this band" I go to youtube, usually it's there but not always. If I like it I then download an album or two, or maybe their discography. If I really really like it I'll do my best to attend a gig of theirs. If they're a metal band they most likely have some shirts or a poster I'll get one of those.
I do know that, living in a small-medium sized city that does not see lots of touring bands, if I did not pirate, my music palette would be microscopic compared to how it really is. I mean, I would probably still think Pantera and Morbid Angel were the be all-end all of metal.
Not only that but I don't think most people can afford to buy hundreds of CDs in hopes of finding the dozen or so from that genre that they really like. And the article is right about one thing. Very little of the money you pay for a CD goes to the artist. And that small tiny amount of money leftover going to them still has to be split up between the band members.

just wanted to point out the contradiction there.
also I don't think the original article author said that he was forced to pirate by white collar dudes

exactly. In the old days, if you bought bootlegged, you knew it was shitty quality, but you just didn't have the cash to buy the real deal. Nowadays its almost reversed, and the worst part is that the consumer that didn't do anything wrong/trying to do the right thing is the one that has to suffer via unskippable previews, shitty quality, drm, and other nonsense...no wonder they are soon to read up how a torrent works. The marketplace simply isn't adjusting for the most part, so fuck them. Economic survival of the fittest. Go back to D.C. and get more of our tax money, that seems to be the only thing you are good at.
btw, I do think some people are having the right idea
Louis' C.K.'s recent special for one great example.
