I always wondered if there was something George Lucas-y about DJ Shadow, ie being surrounded by people who were really talented at their craft and carried him quite a ways, while reaping all of the benefits. I have no evidence to support this, it just seems so odd that he was able to make an album like Entroducing, and then do something like this...
Granted, i like a lot of the instrumentals on UNKLE's Psyence Fiction, and I think his Entroducing influence had more to do with why I liked that album more than anything. I don't like any of the Unkle releases there after.

gotta step in and disagree here.
He worked with Del later and also did the Only She Chapters and, well, a shitbucket full of other stuff that's just as surprising and fresh as OWE. love the guy.

MFKR showed a lot of potential, self-titled is an album I still love and listen to from time to time. The rest is shit

Christian Death - Only Theatre of Pain (this is probably the biggest tragedy since the debut album is perhaps the greatest goth rock album of all time)
Front 242 - Geography (the first album has a very analog , minimal wave darker industrial sound to it, then they just went into cheesy belgian new beat territory with bad vocals for the rest of their career)
the next one may make some people actually pissed off, but i strongly believe that after the first 2 Primus albums (suck on this and frizzle fry) it was a slow downhill trek

i think most of that is wrong.
i haven't heard some of them but, for example, 'Demon Days' was much better than the first Gorillaz album... etc.
