i realized whenever im feeling really pumped up ill put on some Zappa-Willie the Pimp for a ridiculously long guitar solo and it is near goddamn perfection.

then i found this live clip of him with Montana:

what hath god wrought.

post insanely good guitar soloing here (preferably live, because its that much more badass).

For serious though (a) that Montana solo is great and (b) Adrian Belew was on a higher plane of existence for that entire TH concert, as were the rest of the live band.

edit: In this video John McLaughlin takes a pretty good solo with Billy Cobham starting at 3:30 but more importantly Jan Hammer reveals that he is the same person as Elton John.

One of the best live sets of all time - Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East '71

Rite of Strings - I saw them live in 94 i think they played the edmonton jazz fest. Came in 2 minutes late high as fuck, the guy we had to walk past was this middle aged cunt and when we walked past he threw the most passive-aggresive snit. Me and my friend just laughed at his sorry ass. The funny thing is Al Di Meola was like half a step out of tune and that cunt had no clue, but whatever, still a great show. (jump to about 3:30 to get to Al's solo)

This has to be one of the finest moments ever recorded - Jimi live at the Beeb Drivin South

So glad I clicked on these as they are clips I would usually ignore. Endless guitar noodling is something that bores me to tears, but his stuff is pretty cool.

And now I am off to find out about Wilco....

I admire Allan Holdsworth's level of skill and musicianship, but why would he want to put those years of experience towards making tracks with timbres so horrid it sounds like virtuosic elevator music? Why are almost all virtuoso guitarists unable to detect the cheese?

I'm not really all about solos in music.  Especially really long ones.  Or solo oriented things done by virtuoso guitarists.  But I'm surprised that Eruption isn't in here yet.  Like it or not(personally I don't), it had quite an impact on the guitar world at that time.

I wouldn't know what live solos to look up but I was always a fan of Marty Friedman.  He made Megadeth listenable for me, his solos were really cool and exotic.  At least until I couldn't stand Dave anymore.

Also this:  (the 2nd solo starting right before the 4:00 mark)  Had this dude lived he woulda beaten Yngve to the punch on the classical solo guitar shredding world, maybe.
