Post interesting/cool interviews

I stumbled across an interview Adult Swim - of all people - did with Actress, after trying find one for ages (obviously searching for "actress interview" is going to come up with a ton of shit).

"it's not like Taxi Driver, you know wo'a'mean"

here's another interview AS did with Pinch, who I'm a big fan of now. an intelligent, soft-spoken dude. I had one of those braingasm moments when I found out he's the one behind Tectonic.

this is probably my favourite short interview of one of the WATMM Featured Artists because of 0:51-0:54s

wow, never seen this either, knew very little about this guy before this, even though I'd heard of Earth... he has an odd accent/voice

Good one with George Harrison and Ringo, anybody else see the the recent HBO doc about Harrison, it's quite good...

^one of the best Red Bull Music Academy interviews imo

Probably the best interviews about the Norwegian Black Metal scene in here, I'd recommend watching this along with Until The Light Takes Us

this always makes me smile...

Some wise words from Peter Christopherson (RIP):

I was pleasantly surprised when he mentioned Autechre at 2:50 (Part 1).

Also, to continue the Squarepusher interview series:

Really great interview. The part where he says he can't put himself in the position not to listen to other music is what impressed me the most.

Good ol' Genesis:

Also, I remember that some time ago I saw an interview with RDJ on Youtube, and in the beginning of the video he's walking through some hall, while in the background is playing The Waxen Pith. I can't seem to find that video anymore. Does anybody know what I am talking about?

Guest Drahken

[Camera moving about in a car]

Voice: "How do I stop it? Just press it?"

[Cut to Interview on Hotel Patio]

Interviewer: "I'm here with Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher for an interview one day after his performance in the Coachella. Um, it's an honor meeting you, your one of my personal favorite musicians. Um. When I first heard the name of your new album it made me think of a lot of different things and then when I heard your performance last night it kinda made me think about a lot of different things.

[Tom strokes his face, contemplating his beard]

Tom: "Well I like that. Have you heard the album?"

Interviewer: "You know, actually I haven't. They were supposed to possibly later today…."

Tom: "Um yea, that was pretty much the selection of that material, so…”

Interviewer: "Um, well I was just wondering what do you mean by Go Plastic?"

[Tom strokes beard more intently]

Tim: "Uh, I don't really mean anything, it's just like uh its just kinda like finding (?). It's like - I did a track awhile ago (something, cant hear). And uh, I was just like when it came to naming all the tracks when I was putting sleeves together and stuff I was like just sort of, you know, you get yourself temporarily into a sort of this like naming of tracks and a kind of mind set and I was just thinking about all the track names and thinking how (?). I mean one of the things about this sort of music and stuff (?) … So I’m into just making like the most contrived plasticy music in a way that (?) sort of like fake music. It just seems to sort of resonate. Ultimately I don’t think (?). It’s quite catchy you know? ‘Go Plastic’.

[More beard stroking]

Interviewer: “So, how have you liked your trip to California so far?”

Tom: “It’s wicked. I’m quite into America right now.

Interviewer: “Really. Is this your first trip?”

Tom: “Yes. It’s the first time but I’m back into it. Things in America like, it suits me actually. I feel like you can blast off in America. You know what I mean? In England people would kinda get a bit more like…You go..You know…You don’t want to go..You know… Your always almost wanting to hold back somehow. There is something about England its always like uh mmm” [Hugs self] “(People say) I think you’ve gotten a bit off the rails their mate” “And it’s like..The only thing I want to do IS go off the rails. Its just like that, you know? I think it’s maybe its still about being..I’m still pretty young, and you know I think that’s just what you want to do, you just want to go mental. I’m mean I’m not really hoping to get old and stuff…Getting there like, being more organized like here [hand gestures]…I don’t know it just suits me. (Whole bunch of stuff I cant hear, talking about getting old – lots of hand gestures in front of the chest) I’ve never felt like I fitted anything good until. (?) I want to do it here.

I started off getting like a lot of respect from drum and bass scene and as I started…as soon as my records started to mutate it was like “Oh no, Squarepusher is..he’s like shit he doesn’t tow the line away. He won’t just like stick with this one kind of like, image [more hand gestures] or this one thing and its like I can go a month without image

  • 3 weeks later...

It's fascinating watching Scientist work with the mixing board now, it's very "old school" even though he and other dub producers like Mad Professor have worked with digital equipment and bigger soundboards for years. King Tubby and Lee Scratch Perry did this stuff on the fly, on tape, with 16 tracks mixing boards. I love how the vibe when Scratch records in this clip is the same.

These clips are from a documentary series called "Deep Roots," I'm sure some of you have seen it or seen clips. I had a musicology professor tell about them years ago, would love to find a copy.

^ woah I just posted that in the favorite videos thread

also the red bull one is nice, but a big lol at all the subtle red bull product placement

That's always the worst part of those videos. Oh well.

Excellent interview! The bit where Voigt insists on the 4/4 beat makes is a bit lolworthy though. I saw the interviewer in 2010 at a Flying Lotus show and he was the only person up close not dancing or bobbing his head. He just looked very intrigued the whole time...and very German.

somehow the sheer facepalmworthiness of the interviewer makes this better. i can't figure it out.
