^Automatic For The People is very melancholy overall, not outright depressing but bittersweet. On a rather morbid note, it was the last album Kurt Cobain listened to and he had mentioned that he wanted the next Nirvana album to have a similar tone.

 

I'm a longtime R.E.M. fan but know that many people don't care for them, but this is arguably their best album and the only one I would wholeheartedly recommend.

always preferred this specific recording of pyramid song to the finished one. i think it's the way he sings, it sounds like a sad lullaby.

this one might be more peaceful and melancholic than sad per se. but it's always made me feel a bit down. in a good way:
