Opal Tapes

I ordered their second batch of 1991's release High Tech High Life and in a pleasant surprise my wife also ordered it on vinyl for me as an xmas gift, which was a joint release with Boomkat

The only other release I gave a good listen to was the sold out Huerco S. tape. I need to browse their discography again, it's an interesting label - hard to classify techno/house with a lot of noise and industrial vibes seems to be a recurring theme. The guy who runs it (I think he records as Basic House) is a nice, responds to emails (I think he did the 2nd batch of 1991's tape based on requests) and the ordering process was quick and easy. If you're on facebook check out their page it's pretty informative about release dates and such.

haven't heard any other stuff from this label, but the Wanda Group release is great: http://opaltapes.bandcamp.com/album/wanda-group-piss-fell-out-like-sunlight

he used to go under the name Dem Hunger, always creates really interesting soundscapes, the Wanda Group stuff is more abstract + ambient sounds

I enjoyed that one too. I realized he was also Dem Hunger after browsing discogs...he put out a release on Leaving Records as well.

Wanda Group brought this label to my attention. Big fan of Wanda & Dem Hunger. Everything else I've listened to on Opal has been pretty sweet.

Fave Opal Tapes release has def been 1991 under his MCMXCI guise, Skogen Flickan och Flaskan. Stuff sounds a little like Heiroglyphic Being. iVVVo's record not bad either. like an actress lite.

Basic House is probably my favorite from the group. his recent album 'Caim in Bird Form' (actually on Digitalis rather than Opal Tapes) is really good. after that, the new Coin tape is another favorite; it's a bit different from a lot of OT stuff, kind of like a hybrid of Opal Tapes and Mika Vainio.

if you like Opal Tapes, you should also check out Container and Prostitutes, neither of which are on Opal Tapes (Prostitutes has a split on OT, but his albums are elsewhere), but both would fit in well

yeah this is a really interesting label at the moment.

just to add, they have a tumblr

http://opaltapes.tumblr.com/

wanda group (aka Loius Johnstone) is killing it right now. he's also completely addicted to social networks - friend him on FB

https://www.facebook.com/SPECIALBEER

or follow on twitter

https://twitter.com/WANDAGROUP

he can get a bit unhinged sometimes

The label sound is very unique. I like their focus on lo-fi / tape passed warm sounding production where the low-mid frequencies are pronounced, no sterile plastic high frequency synths and effects

Will be checking out more of their catalog

Patricia is great, Body Issues is a fantastic record. Other Opal Tapes/Black Opal favourites include Naka Naka's album, the Huerco S. untitled tape, the new Perfume Advert and HOLOVR's Holo Earth.

They've got a sale going on right now (I think it's still going?) and so I picked up a few things from them yesterday:

AHC - V - ambient and noisy stuff. lots of strange feels, lots of lovely, some goofy, haunting at times?

Body Boys - Growth Window - some of the other releases from the artist are low key dancey but this one is mostly ambient and dark, lofi and creepy but pretty good imo

Naka Naka - Juan Pestanas - sorta like Aphex SAW 1 but even more chill? I've got another one from the artist, Mundo Harsh, that I've listened to a ton since I bought it a couple years ago.

Lumisokea - Apophenia - dense fast hard dirty polyrhythmic/metric beats and shit. feels a bit like a trial run in a way, but the artist has done other stuff like that I think that I need to check out.

Acre - Hollow Body - not usually the sort of thing i'd go for, a bit cheeky in ways, sorta reminds me of recent patten? not 100% sure why I felt compelled to buy it but I did so

Sale code is summer, 40% off so like ~$3 digital albums give or take conversion where you are. If the sale's still going on? I assume it is.

Acid Drop is superb.

Favourite recent(ish) release is E-Saggila's Lux Campaign - great mix of industrial, techno, noise, jungle and ambient http://opaltapes.com/album/lux-campaign

This 12" by Russell E. L. Butler is excellent too, can't believe it hasn't sold out to be honest. Worth picking up in the sale http://opaltapes.com/album/the-first-step
