Hey all,

I'm excited to share my first EP, "Grandma Tapes" with you all. You can listen here:

http://inkjetmusic.com/Grandma-Tapes

Grandma Tapes is made out of samples from my grandmother's collection of classical cassettes. Everything on the record is a sample, including the drum sounds. And all of it was created/arranged/mixed entirely on the Elektron Octatrack (with a little extra reverb at the very end).

There were 3 strict rules I set out for the project - if you're curious, I go into them in detail in the link above.

More fun than rules: I also made a music video for the first track out of found ballet footage. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxGiiWnFM0Q

You can also listen over at http://soundcloud.com/ink-jet

Interested to hear what you all think. Thanks for listening.

This sounds great, nice one!

I imagine someone will be along shortly to tell you to read the rules.

I will go read them, what exactly did I do wrong?

Sounds very professional and polished!

However, it would have been cool if you'd put the names of the original composers or compositions in each track title (since it's

part of the concept).

I don't think it's in the rules, but in the pinned topic on this subforum.

Digging this release. I need to get a new cassette player.

Thanks spectral9. I actually did include the names of the composers - each of the track titles is an anagram for the name of the composer whose music I'm using.

This is fantastic. I hear the adagio on Marble Abuser (saMuel bArber!) Now I have to mull over the others and figure out the sources. I'll be here for a while looks like...once again, great work!

Thanks redarmy! And nice catch. A few people have been able to figure out the composer's, but you're the first one to notice the piece. Is it that ending part that made it clear? I guess it's his most famous piece.

BTW I see you're in Brooklyn. I'm playing a show tomorrow night (Friday 8/23) at the Way Station in Prospect Heights. http://waystationbk.blogspot.com/

Come kick it!

Oh nice, I've been told as a diehard Who fan that I need to visit that place. I will try to make it for sure!

i was expecting something made of only samples from the classical tapes, which would have been more interesting for me since thats what i was expecting. so it lost my attention for now, but from what i have heard it sounds great, but in a way that veers from what originally attracted me to it.

Yeah I hear what you're saying Skibby, but it actually is entirely made from samples of the tapes! Even the drum sounds are actually microsamples of classical pieces, just heavily processed. For example, all of those kick drums are little moments with some bass energy that I sampled then played through a low pass filter with a low cutoff and high resonance.

Granted, at that point you're hearing the sound of the filter more than the original sample, so I understand your point. But I did stay true to the concept of only sampling a single source throughout. And most of the sounds aside from the percussion aren't mangled so unrecognizably. Check outinkjetmusic.com/grandma-tapes for a bit more of a description.

In any case, thanks for checking it out!
