Question for Hauntologists....

Question: Is the artist Mary Arches Julian House (The Focus Group)?

Evidence in favor: Devon Folklore Tapes Vol V was originally said to be by Broadcast & the Focus Group, but is now said to be by Children of Alice vs Mary Arches. There was a feature on Broadcast entitled "Children of Alice" in some mag not too long ago w/ artwork by Mr House.

On LFT001 (Pendle, 1612) There is a track by Mary Arches that totally sounds like it could be Julian House.

Any thoughts?

off-topic but the word "hauntology", whoever came up with it, sounds (imo) as pretentious and idiotic as "idm"

It's worse, actually, as it's a Derrida reference to the study of the specter of socialism hanging over Europe. It got re-purposed to apply to the Ghost Box folks and their brethren - the specter of the past in the present, if you will.

I suppose they could call it Nostalgica, if they wanted something even stupider. (also, some thumb up the tookus types like to call IDM Electronica - teehee)

from what i understand: children of alice is james, roj and julian. i don't think mary arches is much different in line up (perhaps with exception to who is really in charge of the compositions)

oh, and out of those folklore tapes, the 2nd (two witches) and 3rd one (inland water) were mindblowingly good

Agreed, I've enjoyed most of them, but I find it very, very frustrating that Davis Barker not longer sells them in digital. such a pain, and not sure why he bothers. I still haven't heard the latest one, and I'd happily pay for it, but he won't let me...

attempted edits:

edit: should've follow your link!

edit2: Two Witches was #1 and inland water was #3. #2 (Graves) is awesome as well (Anworth Kirk on one side and David Orphan on the other!)

edit3: now, where to buy the mary arches side....?

Nostalgica, lol.

I think it's a far better term and descriptor than "IDM" ever was, even if it was re-purposed to describe music. It's a bit silly, but conceptually "hauntology" is something that can describe a lot of electronic and underground music in general. I agree though that's too tied up in Ghost Box label but oh well, most genre descriptors have faults.

not sure i heard that one. the only work by orphan i've listened to was 'songs for hannah henley' which i believe came out on pre-cert home entertainment.

btw: i kinda understand barker's insistance on keeping these as limited edition book-cased cassette tapes as it feeds into that retro-fetishism that vinyl enthusiasts still had when people were pressing DIY vinyl that could only be found in certain places (in this case- wherever devon folklore tapes are sold).

it also feels labored upon. cds are so easy to burn now and vinyl requires a certain amount of capital. tape is something a lot of people have completely forgotten about so there is a certain alienation already.

did you listen to barker's 'the devil and the schoolmaster'? he made that free for download a few months back iirc.

The Children Of Alice bandcamp link posted on here is very nice. Can anyone recommend any other artists with a very similar vibe?

I've tried to get the Devon Folklore Tapes Vol 4 but as it is sold out on bandcamp you can't buy the FLAC editions either. I understand the whole ltd edition, book, casette retro-fetish thing but what's the point of denying people digital copies when they were quite happy to orginally offer them with the casette when it was available?

Seems like lost money and customers. If the artist cannot even be bothered to sell me a legitimate legal download, well......
