Sunny Ambient

Recommended Posts

Biosphere's Dropsonde is probably the most "sunny" ambient-release I know. It's freaking beautiful, I haven't heard anything else that fits a summer afternoon as well as this album, each track has got an immense warmth to it, it's relaxing yet emotional, like the laid-back brother of Geogaddi.

Is there anything else like it?

I haven't heard anything like Dropsonde. These are some other, more strictly ambient albums that I would say are even more sunny, overall, than Dropsonde.

You can't go wrong with Chihei Hatakeyama for sunny ambient jams. In particular I would go with his 'Saunter', 'A Long Journey', and 'Minima Moralia' albums:

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's 'Conversations With Myself':

Simon Scott's 'Below Sea Level' album:

This album from Simon Bainton (of Pausal):

Loscil's 'First Narrows' album:

Hakobune's 'Away From The Lunar Waters' album:

That Loscil-track is pretty fitting! I didn't know that album, I only know Plume which is beautiful as well, and kind of sad, too.

I forgot to mention my other go-to Summer-Ambient-Album - Robert Rich's Echo of Small Things

It's not exactly similar to Dropsonde (as there are only beatless tracks), but it has a somewhat similar mood ... it's actually even more related to the mood of the Ueda-games (ICO and Shadow of the Colossus)

The Automatics Group - Summer Mix. It's like delving through your brain trying to find 10 year old memories of summer parties

Also Celer - Evaporate And Wonder. The soundtrack to the final sunset of the summer slowly descending

The only thing that came to mind immediately was the Ico game soundtrack, and the track form it Heal. I can listen to it for hours. It's just so nice. Really warm and hazy but also a tad bit sad.

Oh man I used to stay at that save bench for ages just listening to this

I'm checking out some of those! Keep them coming. Some more stuff with beats? Loscil hase some, the majority is only soundscapes, which is fine, but it's a bit hard to work while listening to this!

We're currently setting up a kind of exhibition at art school, everyone's working like mad and running all over the place, painting walls and doing several things at once - but during the multiple times I played Dropsonde there over my stereo, the whole mood seemed to change, people started to calm down, get more focused . I don't think people even noticed the music consciously, but it's a beautiful sun-lit building near the river, and Dropsonde really does something to the mood!

Yeah same. I used to keep it on and kinda drift off. Good times, I'm waiting for the Last Guardian to come out so I can play Ico and soc all at once again.

This is turning out to be an incredibly nice thread, loving all the tracks here.

I'll submit a few of my own, if no one minds - these were composed with sunshine in mind:

I've been playing L. Pierre a lot:

A lot of releases on cassette tape labels fit this description: they are pretty but often deliberately (and arguably excessively) lo-fi.

If beats and a bit more percussive rhythm or higher tempo is what you're after I'd recommend Helios or maybe Ulrich Schnauss or Tycho. Lusine and Apparat come to mind too. I dunno, it depends on the aesthetic too. There's pl

You might look into post-rock as well, the less soft/loud crescendo stuff.

Wow that tape stuff is neat.

Been digging it a lot lately - another reason I love RDJ's SAW albums is that they were recorded to tape. I like hi-fi stuff too though, it's a mood thing I guess.

Both beatless works, but the concept behind them certainly embodies 'sunny' music.

John Hudak - Room With Sky

Andrew Deutsch - The Sun

Good shout on the Shuttle 358, hopefully he'll get around to releasing another album.

Who said tape can't be hi-fi? Autechre certainly didn't.
