pretty standard, ableton, loads of native instruments stuff, reverbs, delays, compressors, distortions by the dozen.

i do like games aswell though so i will be picking up a graphics card. ive been led to believe i can make a pretty sweet all round for around a 1000.

i built a pc over the summer for music and games, here is roughly what it consists of.

maybe go the extra mile and get an i7 instead of i5. I dont have too much trouble with plugins (using FL studio) but some of them (like Diva) like to eat up lots of cpu. also if youre gonna be using USB audio, windows 7 64 bit has a history with driver issues. I have the akai eie pro and have to reinstall the drivers all the time, i'm not sure if its an issue with windows or if akai is just shitty, but if youre going 64 bit (which you should) make sure you pick a good audio card.

It used to be find an audio pc supplier and copy their specs, as they would make choices to ensure motherboard compatibility etc with regards to audio stuff. Less of a concern these days, but not a bad start.

I've been having slowdown and bad audio from weak computer and its ruining my process completely.

Ideally I would have everything in one or two project files. My music is complex and needs sometimes up to forty or more tracks.

In order to cut down I use simple plugs when I can for eq and compression.

But when I have stuff like effectrix, volcano filter, zebra, reaktor, guitar rig

I can't sometimes even get over like seven tracks.

So ill have to do things in like seven different projects which makes it a huge pain in the ass to ever actually finish anything or to have any fucking control over the music since it often requires bouncing huge audio files and then not being able to modulate. It's ruining my ability to make stuff.

How can I solve this? What is the problem? Ram, hard drive space?

Not to mention having to find old files to remove things or fix things I don't like, which is basically impossible due to how long it takes to find and load project files with all the plugs and with limited hard drive space for audio wavs. so I have to either think of a way to bullshit the music or do the other thing which is to just give up.

Also, I would like to start storing everything on external hd and loading it from there. I'm sure that's not that hard to do.

With a computer that never slowed down I would finish everything within the month.

can you describe your system?

cpu?

os?

model number of system?

lappy or desky?

ram?

etc?

MacBook not sure the model as it's not with me. It's the normal size. Purchased in 2009 runs 10.5.8. No interest in a new system just ram and shit like that. Just not sure how effective that will be

i had the same problem recently, it drove me crazy, on a laptop from 2007. long story short, my power supply needed replacing. the power was throttled from behind the scenes, unbeknownst to me. after buying a new power supply, no more problems at all.

use a program that can check your cpu speed and see if it matches what the cpu is supposed to be doing.

refurbed imac

+1

Won't be the best for games obviously but you won't be tearing your hair out over driver issues.

yeah this. I was surprised that when I got a macbookpro I didn't have to fuck around with asio4all or whatever just to get nice low latency audio. I can play guitar through Guitar Rig without any noticeable latency, which is ridiculous!

ive already got a nice soundcard so thats all good. just ordered all the parts for the 1100 quid 'enthusiast' model, so all stations go. looks like a beast of a pc.

No soundcards on that list. I remember when soundcards were ubiquitous. Is it a specialist thing now.

That is so true. You basically have to outsource it to a box, which is annoying, and so un-Fourtet.

If I was getting a pc for music prod, I would not get a graphics card at all. Why create temptation to do other things?

well, if you want to be running multiple monitors at 2560x1600, you kinda need a dedicated graphics card otherwise your system will crawl. so negating a graphics card isn't always a good idea, it depends entirely on what you're doing with your setup
