This tape of 12 songs was given out to Rephlex and WARP people in Richard's favour as a potential follow up to ...I Care Because You Do - Richard was beginning to experiment in using the Macintosh computer more in conjunction with his already vast collection of synths, and these tracks are some of the byproducts of those experiments. Two of the tracks ended up on his next album (The Richard D James Album) (the versions of Fingerbib and Logon Rock Witch from MfM are nearly identical to the final versions).
Contrary to popular belief, the cassette had nothing to do with shopping it around to video game manufacturer as a potential soundtrack for a game. It is unknown where the title originates, although there was a book released in 2002 called "Mystery of the Melodies From Mars" by Bill Myers that bears no connection to these songs or vice versa. It is rumoured that around 11 copies of this cassette exist, and simply have "melodies from mars" written on them.

No, I got in quite a bit of trouble back in the Joyrex.com days when I originally hosted the MP3s thinking it was legal to do so...

anyway, i love the album. its so gleeful. the rumors about the video game music really dont seem so far fetched to me, considering the tracks are extremely repetitious and have that bouncy, video game sound, but i suppose if that rumor has been verified as bullshit i shall repeal such notions in the the land of morgan...

now the million dollar question, would it be possible (legal) to host it on the greatest Aphex Twin site of all time?

i figured that would be the answer, there's just too many b.s. politics involved with record companies. even though its doubtful any record company owns the rights to this (or it would have been released) there's obviously still legal weight they can pull, not worth risking the future of WATMM on. oh well, maybe we'll get Richard's blessing one day. if not i'll just track him down, get him drunk, and coerce him into signing a few papers.

Actually Rephlex owns the rights to these tracks.

Nice signature image, by the way, but the height limit is 200px - yours is 297px. If you wouldn't mind adjusting it, I'd appreciate it.

Yeah, I've been meaning to fix that - meant to be side by side and behave like that if the forum width is not wide enough. They just need to be on top of one another.
