The noise - nicknamed "the bio-duck" - appears in the winter and spring in the Southern Ocean. However, its source has baffled researchers for decades.

Now acoustic recorders have revealed that the sound is in fact the underwater chatter of the Antarctic minke whale.

I find this subject absolutely fascinating. Bloop still weirds me out - still sure that's related to some kind of Drexciyan Wavejumper expedition awaking Cthulhu.

The researchers do not yet know under what circumstances the minke whales make their distinctive vocalisations, although the sounds that were recorded were produced close to the surface and before the mammals made deep dives to feed.

Was just about to post this.

 

The bloop is a very interesting phenominon, but there have been noises somewhat like it recorded off iceburgs rubbing together.

The 'mysterious sea creature' would have to be fucking massive to emit that sound from what I read and the amount of food most likely needed to sustain a creature that much bigger than a whale would seem to be a little hard to come by without going all oregon trail and hunting the deep blue scare.

I love this one in particular, the idea that you can sometimes hear people pottering about in the background over a wash of static is super-creepy and IDM.
