Forgive me if I am terribly late, but today I found myself listening to a collection of drum and bass remixes of Art of Noise tracks when I heard a familiar sound...

Sounds very similar to the sound that begins to take shape at around 5:25 in Sublimit

 

Have I gone mad? Did both of these artists sample another source I am unfamiliar with? Am I hearing things?

Yeah that. I think it was sampled from a track from the 80s but I can't remember what it was called if it was.

okay, I'm convinced they sampled the scratching in Herbie Hancock's Rockit.

The origin of the sample is from the outro to the track 'Change the Beat' by Beside, 1981. Was spoken by Fab 5 Freddy using a vocoder.
