Have you listened to any of the other tracks on this thread? Granted, it is all based on a small set of orchestral samples, FX rack and additive sine synth... definitely not unlimited, I concede, but I think there's a huge variety for what it is....

I see you played a few rounds recently (davidc). So, you must feel there isn't much diversity in the game's selection pool right now? If so, it's because I'm "stacking the deck" with multiple accounts, getting ready to make #022. Also, if not many people play for a while things get stagnant, but then it livens up when lots of people participate.

Moreover, the game is a science experiment first and foremost, and it wasn't ever intended to be used to make these "tracks". I just noticed one day that it is somewhat controllable once you get a feel for it, so that the resulting loops are more similar to each other yet constantly evolving. I thought it was fun to try and make flowing sequences more akin to music than the more rapid mutations that normally occur in casual gameplay.

A few generations from the last loose MP3s posted, we're here:

http://game.darwintunes.org/REST/population/1/individual/c20ae776/audio.mp3

http://game.darwintunes.org/REST/population/1/individual/d995db83/audio.mp3

http://game.darwintunes.org/REST/population/1/individual/5e538661/audio.mp3

One way you can get a little more influence over the outcome:

Clean, quiet, low-complexity loops are good for reducing the complexity of other loops, or inheriting a few key features of a complex loop while discarding the majority of it.
Silent loops are a gamble, some can clone other loops and lose their own features, others keep their features and ignore the other loop almost entirely, and somewhere in between as well.
Either type are sure to yield a highly diverse set of potential offspring (8 per generation to pick 1 from) and you'll have more chance of getting the effect you want.

Example:
This distilled loop I worked on for a few generations has very low complexity:

http://game.darwintunes.org/REST/population/1/individual/8aaa52ef/audio.mp3
That loop bred with a different player's very chaotic abrasive loop, which I liked for the static-y beat and the "squirt" sound toward the end, resulted in:
http://game.darwintunes.org/REST/population/1/individual/768caea0/audio.mp3
which gained the static and squirt sound attributes as I had hoped/expected. That loop was then bred with one of the loops mentioned above:
http://game.darwintunes.org/REST/population/1/individual/5e538661/audio.mp3
resulting in a simplified offspring due to inheritance of the original distilled loop's simple characteristic:
http://game.darwintunes.org/REST/population/1/individual/2f298c2d/audio.mp3
Notice how, toward the end, the one-off kick drum is a pretty clean version of the original sample, while his parent's kick has so much processing you'd mistake it for something else. Not only can simple/silent loops subtract sound in subsequent generations, they can subtract FX processing from those sounds too.

Now let's kick it back up a notch with a blast from yer spice weasel

Thank you kindly!

This is very interesting - thanks for givin' me the awareness on it!

Lovin' this music, jsmcpn -  sounds so alive - actually sounds positively possessed - not so sure about evolution though, am hearing in track 009a  proof of Alien Intervention! :)

DarwinTracks Final Collection

The first track in the playlist is the original "Founder" loops that were placed into the gene pool at the beginning of the "world" in 2014.  From those loops, all future loops descended... including every 7-second piece of audio in this thread!
