Guest vibertisgod

Just listened to 'Loud Places' 4 times on repeat, really looking forward to this release.

Had his excellent DJ mixes on heavy rotation for years so this solo effort is long overdue imo

LP is exactly as good as I hoped it'd be. Was really looking forward to it and it did not disappoint, and still not worn out from listening to Gosh and Sleep Sound over and over again beforehand.

The official videos for both Gosh and Sleep Sound were absolutely wonderful. Straightforward and unpretentious, not as groundbreaking or "edgy" as a lot of other music videos I've seen in the last year or so, but I dunno, I just really like them. Gosh especially has WATMM vibes to the max.

one negative review on Resident Advisor sparked a torrent of butt hurt fans referring to the reviewer as a 'hater' who 'doesn't respect the scene'. http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=17013 resident advisor facebook thread about the same album is similarly amusing (or infuriating depending on your mindstate). My favorite comment on the facebook one is a guy saying that criticizing music in the scene is bad for the community, apparently everyone should just be patting each other on the back all the time.

The Quietus one was lot more brutal. And honestly it was way too hung up on the author's issue with the albums club culture nostalgia. The RA one is a lot more balanced and focused on the actual act of evaluating the music. RA never seems to really do anything to harm any electronic artist, in fact the review was pretty tame imo. Last week someone said that they deserve credit for actively supporting artists who are often not covered elsewhere or overlooked.

Jamie XX is big enough to have an audience with people like that, the ones who pull the "you're a hater" card at any critical evaluation. I like the guy a lot but these reviews don't bother me at all because:

1. I love the album but objectively it's very debatable in terms of merit/importance (fuck most electronic music with any decent hype/popularity is these days to be honest).

2. He's already reaped endless rave reviews elsewhere, not to mention major features with pfork, grantland, etc. and this kind of childish defending is something I maybe would of done 10 years ago. Maybe. Shit, I remember reading reviews before comment sections and social media metrics. RA would probably rather give a 4.5 or 5 to some Detroit producer with a day job who only puts out 12"s than someone who has produced music for Drake and is doing quite well critically and financially.

3. Diehard fans are idiots. I'd be worse if he was a megastar celebrity - those people literally have absurdly loyal and delusional fans and people who run fan pages and will literally go after anyone saying anything negative, and with scores of mindless followers to favorite and retweet their needless bullshit. I often wonder what kind of risk assessment these bigger review sites have when they decide to run a negative or mediocre review of a major artist.

4. I really only get irked at overrated hype and acclaim - which often I don't really dwell on because I can get the reasoning behind it from outsider perspective and/or I actually dig the music a little bit. With negative reviews I only get irked when it seems so needless. Pitchfork in particular went from ballsy negative reviews of popular or pretentious artists (they rarely give anything less than a 6 anymore) to the same old MOR PR output. Negative reviews now seem to either be sadistic putdowns of niche or indie artists who really don't deserve it (VICE does this all the time, TMT not so much and usually when they do it's actually funny) OR hilariously safe putdowns of bands people have already dismissed.

People seem to really love it or totally hate on it.

I lean more towards loving it, I wasn't expecting too, it works as an album, hearing one or two songs before the album I wasn't too impressed.

If you click on the Jamie xx artist profile on RA they describe him as a 'beat-maker' and 'knob shaker'. Which sounds like innuendo for a wanker to me.
