True Detective Season 2

good episode, I still think Vaughn is the weak link, especially his scenes with the wife - though I like the angle on his and Velcoro's past. next episode or two will obviously have Bezzerides attempting to infiltrate one of the escort parties, I'm struggling to believe her character is capable of acting the part though, her sexual harassment meeting was pretty lol. didn't think the scene with the CEO was out of character at all, he's desperate for the land deal, but he knows he's exposed so he's playing his cards close to his chest.

How was the shootout in the previous episode a turning point that deserved a 2 months jump in time with the closure of the Caspere case? It barely had a purpose. I don't like how the case usually progresses with someone saying out of the nowhere ''Oh look, I just found suspect while you were all busy with your family/relationship issues at home. Here is a picture of him and let's find him''.

Ray is the only character with interesting personal drama. Meanwhile Frank treats his wife like shit and they change their mind about their kid in an endless loop, the sexual harassment false accusation against Ani only leads her to drinking her problems away, and don't even get me started with Paul.

The biggest challenge as a viewer this season so far is caring about what happens in the show. The events might piece together at some point, but it's near impossible to give a damn about it. The show has no focus. The first season was all both main characters' development and interactions while the murder case was simply a context. But this season, it's very difficult to keep interest in a case and four different characters. There is no opportunity for any of it to develop properly within 59-minute timeframe.

I have a feeling the team behind True Detective counted more on the main cast than the scenario to make this season a success. The only thing reminiscent of the first season is those aerial shots with that dark music, which is a weak way to make us think ''This is sooo the True Detective atmosphere I was looking forward to''.

I have a bad feeling that Paul's situation is not going to end well. he's entering a shaky marriage w/ babby all to run away from his sexuality, he's scarred both literally and figuratively from his merc days, he's got a horrible/borderline incestuous relationship with his mum... he's a mess. I don't think he's going to get a happy ending, although I hope he does. I like his character a lot.

I have no idea how they're going to wrap up all the loose ends in this with only two episodes left...

Also what was with that music up at the house? Those big orchestral swells seemed totally out of place with the rest of the show.

It's almost like they got someone else to do the music for that bit, and then realized in post that it didn't work , but by then it was too late so they just said "fuck it" and left it in.

Anyways, decent episode - the main story moved forward quite a bit, and lots of tits and ass for the people who wanted it.

^ agreed with the first point.

This would've made a pretty good first season of a multi season show but as it is, not so sure.

I quite liked the soundtrack of that bit, made it very hallucinatory. Def feeling the Mulholland Drive vibe in those scenes.

Excellent episode. Lots of payoff to previously set up plot threads & character traits.

That coke & booze apartment trashing scene tho, jeez. That empathetically hurt my brain watching him hoover up those rails.

Yeah, that was some method acting if I've ever seen it ;)

That was just candid footage of Colin Farrel on the set between takes.

when he walloped that pile of precious down = instant twinge flashback-wiff of special-fx

"rack us oop a line then, Col"

thought Rachel McAdams was superb during her own hallucinatory ordeal, even if the whole land-deal thru the window was implausible

This was probably the best episode of this season so far, but it still did not bring anything to this season.

Kinda unrealistic how quickly they ID'ed the female deputy for killing the security guard. She was an unknown, in disguise, in a house full of hundreds of drunk/high people and it took them like 24 hours to put out an APB?

Powerful people can get shit done, especially if they already have an idea of who they're looking for.

The unrealistic bit I thought was that guy waiting for Paul. Those tunnels were supposed to go everywhere under the city - how did he know Paul would come out that one?

Still, intense as fuck.

had a feeling that was going to happen as soon as he looked down at his phone, kind of annoying as he just took out 5 guys (they all have shitty aim?) just for the scene to get ruined/predictable in that way getting shot in the back right at the end, maybe there was someone waiting at every exit lol..... also predict franks (vaughs) wife will also have been going against him the whole time revealed in the final epi
