True Detective Season 2

I like keeping the tropes of one detective being questioned, and then flashing back that were used last season. Obviously, Farrell is being set up as the Rust equivalent, but that could be a bait and switch. We have basically 4 characters this season instead of 2, so anyone could turn out the be the TD.

watched this last night (re-run of the first episode) and i don't get all the hype. actually, i disliked season 1 after 1.5 episodes. this to me just seems like meandering detective work with a few shockers thrown in:

catching the porno shoot, religious dad doesn't want to save his daughter from doing porn, colin farrell fucking up some kid's dad in front of the kid for cutting up his son's shoes then saying he will butt fuck the dad with the mom's headless corpse etc etc

Why the hell did they hire the director of Fast and Furious 3-6 to replace Fukunada? The direction of the first season is what made True Detective so great. Seriously this episode was a huge letdown. I will watch the episode again to give it a chance, but damn...

I didn't like it as much as I liked S01E01 - but what really threw me was when Vince Vaughn was saying "It's an 8 part series" twice which is the shittist in-joke ever but he is a comedian I suppose and wtf was going on with everything being called 'Vinci'.

Is HBO running a 'we'll turn your career upside down' buyers club?

I actually really enjoyed it for the setting and Mulholland Drive/Lost Highway/film noir/pornstar/impending barroom brawl vibes.

Pretty much exactly the vibe I got. Lots of similarities to Lost Highway especially. And did you notice how the city manager drove past Mullholland Dr in one scene? Was a little quick, but they definitely showed the sign somewhat prominently. I thought it was clearly a Lynch reference. That and the night shot of the no-headlights 100 mph highway

Yeah when he was riding in the car with what appeared to be a dead crow and they showed that street sign my Lynch senses began tingling.

you say that like it's a bad thing? I think the FAF films are pretty well directed (being what they are).

Fukanada had to be replaced because he's moved on to other things. I thought the production was fine, and great in places. The characterisation is what fell flat for me. Farrell's character isn't likeable at all, Vince is just dull, Rachel is 'we need a female character so we'll make a strong manly female character with family issues' - tim riggins is playing jason street. they should have just got jason street in for that role.

obviously i'll stick with it but this feels all gritty and serious without any actual entertainment. the first season was great up until the end. this one feels a bit odd without the 'southern mystique' and the fairly clear plot.

It seemed messy to me, and too many of the lines seemed poorly delivered. Lots of potential and I'm trusting Pizzolatto to do his thing, but not the most promising of starts.

You know like people not posting on WATMM for 4 months, maybe they had other things to do?? :)
