You need to put a very inconvenient box around your head which makes you pretty much incompatible with the real world in multiple ways.

:psyduck:

you haven't tried the current wave of VR that everyone is getting excited about i take it ..

ahh fair enough. yeah, i was a bit on the fence for a bit but using the DK2 more recently really sold it for me. so i really really wanna make sure the neysayers have at least tried it.

i'm not super sure what direction VR will go in the future, if it will just be a niche thing that hobbyists devote money into, or if its something that will become more affordable and that will be linked to living rooms and computers everywhere in good couple of years .. but either way, the experience it's offering as of right now is pretty mind blowing.

You can't honestly compare that flying suicide machine with a VR device?

why not? :)

I cannot think of anything which conveys "I give up on the real world" to the rest of the world more than VR does.

Say what, i don't give a fuck about staring at the screen (a rather unspectacular one) and pushing buttons and shit like a royal faggot, yet i live with that coz there's cool shit to do. So: if there's a nice porn game or some neat shooter on VR set-up only - i'll gladly fuck with its clunkiness and bite the price. If not, i don't care how awesome that technology is for imagination or for the next generation, i'll die sooner than it develops.

Hololens is a pipe dream. Of all the VR brands, I'm confident that this one will trainwreck first.

why? it's not VR for a start, if anything AR is more likely to succeed generally because it doesn't have the flaws around nausea and other problems with total immersion and having to still interact in a real room (which can be somewhat mitigated in VR only with movable flooring and stuff).

the main problem with hololens so far seems to be the crappy FOV, though apparently the latest version of the headset fixes this a bit - not by increasing the FOV, but just by making the headset more adjustable and comfortable so it's easier to centre and make the most of. I reckon it'll be a pretty niche market until they roll out v2 with a slimmer headset and larger FOV.

it's not like a bicycle, it's more like this:

tumblr_ndfvuuPwg71txx6x7o2_500.jpg

some decades later we can see what's wrong with this device, but back in the day they thought it was actually a good idea

This.

Also, just the basic human element of it being a pain in the ass to feel immersed in. Historically, people have usually chosen devices and methods that are easier. The processing power and immersive environment doesn't mean shit if you hate having a dumb block on your face and it takes up a whole fucking room.

actually here's one comment on the article which I found interesting:

it’s not because people are lazy or lack imagination that 2D entertainment will continue to dominate for another while. Well, not just because of that. It’s that 2D works.

To get that we have to understand what “works” means in terms of entertainment, namely the proportional (or necessary) suspension of disbelief; our ability to become engrossed.

This ranges from accepting that we’re “there” with the studio crowd in a game show, to feeling our pulse race and our stomach turn with the beats and thrills of an action adventure or horror story. Once you start thinking about this you realize that there isn’t much missing from our consumption of entertainment — not by any reasonable measure does it seem our enjoyment of most of the types of 2D entertainment we know of would be significantly improved by a greater sense of presence, because our ability to let ourselves get carried away means we can get a completely absorbing feeling of “being there” from a friggin’ book.

This is the greatest hurdle facing VR and AR, both of which may actually push in the opposite direction, and create sort-of an “uncanny valley” for environments. It’s pretty easy to get carried away and feel like you are Master Chief or Solid Snake, and has been for a long time — because it’s already accepted that there’s a need for suspension of disbelief when translating the game story and experience to keyboard, mouse (or controller) and regular screen. If, by contrast, we let ourselves be put into a world that’s supposedly closer to “being there”, but experience that it’s literally only our head movements that are kind-of like that, while everything else, including motion and environment interactions, still has to translate through various devices (not to mention the awareness of the real surroundings that will introduce itself abruptly every time we walk into a wall or coffee table) may well create enough dissonance to conflict with suspension of disbelief.

It’s the subjective experience of immersion that matters, not the technical, outside-in parameters of what it should be. Sure, it’s possible that we can learn to immerse ourselves in VR but the point I’m trying to make is, what’s the compelling reason for doing so?

Basically, if 3D was objectively better for the subjective experience, sculpture would have crushed it throughout history and left painting and drawing by the wayside as crude and inadequate conveyors of experience.

Remember how Kinect & Leap Motion took off? These were relatively unobtrusive and inexpensive HID, and solved a very real world problem - natural gestures communication with computer. Turns out, gestures suck for interacting with a computer.

I've seen the Kinect argument quite a bit and I find it quite surprising. No-one really wanted the kinect before the heavy handed and deceitful marketing campaign, it was blatantly conceived by a bunch of suits as a means to squeeze more cash out of their consumer base and get a slice of nintendos too.

Meanwhile peeps have been dreaming of VR for years and the thing that got it all going was a grassroots kickstarter

I was thinking about posting that video. I watched almost all of the giantbomb htc vive marathon and everything just seemed so terrible. All the VR hype I had accumulated over a lifetime fountained out my ass like a violent diarrhea launch missile as I watched.

lol wow that shit looks incredibly lame. i think you can have more fun with a wii. next to that, it seems just incredible unhandy: you need to set up a big space for your VR cloth. then you have the issue with the cables and the ending was a definite lol. also.. you cant move around. you're stationary. it's not moving around in a endless landscape. it's just being stationary and hopping from one place to another using teleport. and the prices? 800 bucks for the initial investement + all those ridiculous prices for games you're probably done with after 45 minutes?

This shit is going to bomb.. HARD

I don't think it's gonna bomb but everything at launch was a bunch of shovelware and novelty software that all shows off the exact same thing. You can shoot things, things are coming at you and so and so on.

I'm sure VR will enhance some gaming experiences such as space sims and other cockpit oriented vidya games. I mean, I'd fucking LOVE to play Elite Dangerous in VR.

lol'd so hard at the firewatch VR Skype conference at 10m :D
"ima take my headset off"
**implodes**

FOO VR actually made me more interested in VR than any other piece of software I've seen so far.

fucking hilarious how people love to hate on VR. giantbomb are a bunch a jaded cunts who never finds joy in anything, no matter what they do. i'll trust the hundreds of stories and videos i've heard and seen from people who previously had zero interest in VR but got converted within minutes of trying even the most mundane shovelware (which there is a lot of atm), over these bozos.

NASA and nvidia is currently mapping out the surface of mars for VR, all done with photogrammetry, like this thing:

i really don't get how watmm of all people can't be atleast a little bit excited for this shit.

he's got integrity, that doesn't disregard the fact that he's become jaded and increasingly boring (and probably bored) over the years.

Jeff was really the only good thing about Gamespot. The guy seemed more bored then than now.

I don't think he's bored at all. But like he once said, "there's nothing wrong with a healthy amount of cynicism" and I totally agree. He's been in the industry around 25 years and like he's said numerous times, he has seen the same thing happen over and over and over so of course it takes more to impress and excite him. But when he DOES get excited about something then there's a reason to pay attention. At least that's been my experience.
