Ok we've had recent threads Vangelis and Tangerine Dream, Krautrock ect but what do watmm'ers think of the ole flamboyant french synth maestro? For me it he was the first electronic music I got into (admittedly a fanboy in my yoof and more critic in my adulthood) and although he's certainly guilty of some horrendous cheesy pop he's also made some of the most pioneereing electronic music of the 80's. Everyone always rants on about Kraftwerks more direct influence on dance/techno music buit I often think JMJ's best work is often very overlooked and was way ahead of its time. His concerts were pretty too.

Vocal-Oriented Electronic Music 1 2 3

I think this might actually be where the majority of my *favourite* music lies. So please find me some more! I do enjoy purely electronic or purely instrumental music, but there is still something inherently appealing about the sound and tone of the human voice that I find irresistible. So find me those artists and producers who work within electronic music, but who have excellent vocal technique. i.e. artists who actually do both. So I'm not talking about electronic artists who drop in vocal samples or occasionally get in guest singers. I'm talking about artists for whom vocals and the treatment thereof are as integral to the music as the synths and sequencers. (And …

I cant get enough of their album "Funky Kingston". I first heard about them as a part of the soundtrack for the movie "This is England" and Ive been a fan ever since. Instrumental reggae tends to be a bit boring. Vocals keep things interesting in my opinion. So please recommend away.

I know it's an electronic music forum but this man gave so much to music, his own life, literally. In his later years, I would say he used just as much synths and samples as any other electronic musician. If you're a fan, show your respects here, and I'd love to hear some stories as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EPa5sIbhcI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgV3n7sd34w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aiI94CYeac

number one would probably be 'suppers ready' by the classic peter gabriel fronted genesis. how i love this track and it all flows so well. pink floyds 'echos' is great too but i cant remember if thats 20 minutes. then it would probably be manuel gottschings 'e2-e4' followed by steve reichs 'music for 18 musicians'. and im digging the shit out of jim o'rourkes the visitor. fantastic album. 'suppers ready' in all its (edited) glory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzWdDCtC1IM

Cheap but decent turntable
by Guest 123- 0 replies

Hello On a budget — lets say £50?!!! — I'd appreciate any recommendations for a semi-decent turntable (or is it the needle I should be more concerned about?). Second-hand is obviously fine. I would like to be able to record/sample from it and, ideally, it would be somewhat portable but I'm sure this is incredibly idealistic. Many thanks in advance!!!
