A genre that could only exist today, this scene started to blow up in 2020, when Spotify launched in Russia. A sub-genre of phonk, this is late 90s-early 2000s Memphis rap, (usually 2 min. or less in length) mostly bars from Three Six Mafia and DJ Smokey, chopped & screwed, sent through distortion that sounds like JK Flesh produced it, and popularized by YouTube drifting videos. The vocals are intentionally mixed low, giving the genre a ghostly vibe to it. Very interesting to see a country, who is politicized as the enemy of America, digesting their culture and regurgitating it to suit them. IMMORTAL by PlayaPhonk Scary Garry (f…

I was 11 when this came out. It was incredible. Such cool music, and such amazing use of documentary samples. It was very powerful. The A+R man, Ken Gunbaum, says: "Right at the end of the meeting, Paul said: 'Oh, did you see that documentary about Vietnam last week? I taped it and have been messing about with it.' He played us a very rough version of 19. When I heard that "N-n-n-nineteen" hook, I had a "What the heck?" moment. These were the early days of spoken-word sampling: the general public had never heard anything like it" Paul Hardcastle explains - "I used an Emu Emulator, an early type of sampler that had a two-second limit when it came to doin…

https://cdm.link/2022/08/soundcloud-to-cut-1-in-5-employees-worldwide/ I definitely don't take any glee in people losing their jobs, but soundcloud has turned into such a garbage pile. It's amazing how bad it got. I had some kind of subscription to upload, and it was still spamming me constantly to switch to some other kind of subscription to upload and then another additional subscription to listen to stuff... and then started playing long adds when I'm just listening to some random person's music. I get they need to monetize the system but I would think having something people actually want to use would come first. Anywho, hope something like thi…

Afrobeat only turns up 9 hits on watmm, so I figured I'd make this thread in celebration of one of the greatest musicians of all time, Fela Kuti. Fela Anikulapo Kuti (1938 — 1997), or simply Fela, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, pioneer of Afrobeat music, and human rights activist. - Wikipedia Fela Kuti & Egypt 80 - CBB (Confusion Break Bones) [youtubehd]BBD2CXMBWQ4[/youtubehd] Deadi bodi geti accidenti. Yee pa! Confusion breaki boni. Yepa! Na double wahala for deadi bodi And the owner of deadi bodi Double wahala for deadi bodi... --- Fela Kuti was the mouthpiece of Nigerian counterculture in the 1970s. He developed a…

I'm not naming names but you know who I'm talking about. Artists that parody famous people's names by switching some letters around. Only one that ever had some working value I thought was Bit Meddler. At least that had some creative meaning. Outside of that trend there are just some that are plain bad.

I just finished trekking through his entire discog and I'm now a fairly hardcore Vsnares fan. Like... at this point I would say he is tentatively in 2nd place under Ae in my books. The only albums by him I didn't thoroughly enjoy are Songs about my Cats and Horse and Goat. What do you guys think his best album is? If you're up to it, list a handful of the notable ones in order, like I'm about to do Detrimentalist Cavaclade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms Hospitality Printf Rossz Csillag Alatt Született Meathole Doll Doll Doll Infolepsy EP Pink & Green Filth man most of his music is so technical and unpredictable, two of my highest …

https://www.nts.live/ has come up a lot here with their Warp collaborations, and bearing the name and debut of Autechre's mega-release. But as far as I can find NTS doesnt have a general discussion thread. I have shifted to using it almost exclusively for work and occasional home listening. The amount of quality radio shows archived and streaming live is pretty staggering, IMO. So it would be good to have a thread where we can share our latest favorite shows, or discuss if you think they are great/overrated/whatever.

Noticed that there aren't really any JC-L threads on here so I thought I'd make one cause I find his music absolutely mesmerising (his In Summer EP and Songs of Forgiveness album in particular). - Does anyone have any his physicals or has anyone been to one of his shows?

my guess is that because of the autechre collabs there have to be some fans/followers here. a few years ago i decided to make a commitment to really understand the essence this group (well, andrew mckenzie) and i have to say that for the most part ive been unsuccessful. best i can figure is that the works are intended to directly affect the listener in more than just an emotional/intellectual way. its like hes aiming for some kind of serious alteration of consciousness that can only be achieved if you fully engage with the work. that is, put as much work into experiencing the album as the creator did in making it. thats a tall order but also interesting in that it present…
