Harvard creates cyborg flesh that’s half man, half machine Bioengineers at Harvard University have created the first examples of cyborg tissue: Neurons, heart cells, muscle, and blood vessels that are interwoven by nanowires and transistors. These cyborg tissues are half living cells, half electronics. As far as the cells are concerned, they’re just normal cells that behave normally — but the electronic side actually acts as a sensor network, allowing a computer to interface directly with the cells. In the case of cyborg heart tissue, the researchers have already used the embedded nanowires to measure the contractions (heart rate) of the cells. To create cyborg f…

A Thread on David Wallace Foster to talk about David Wallace Foster and whatever else might be relevant. I'll start. Coming from some reference in a piece (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/07/big-questions_n_3886381.html) on the Huffpo about "keeping the big questions alive" and "how society is losing contact with things which should be important", I struck on a couple of youtubes which were interesting in various ways. The pop-version of DWF's "This is water" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6z5TIFr5XMo The full version And more interestingly, an uncut interview where you can "see" him think and reason in a dialogue of sorts: http://www.you…

Mods: I didn't want to post in a hot headed thread that starts off on a blood thirsty note. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate explains who the rebels in Syria really are, and who's backing them.

Have any of you heard about this? Next Citizens United? McCutcheon Supreme Court Case Targets Campaign Contribution Limits Help Stop Citizens United, Round 2 http://www.fec.gov/law/litigation/McCutcheon.shtml Basically, this Alabama guy named Shaun McCutcheon is mad that he can't donate more than the current campaign caps to the candidates he likes. The Republican National Convention (RNC) agrees that it's ludicrous that they should be limited by how much money they can take in by good folks like Shaun. Together they have been arguing to the Supreme Court that they are being denied their First Amendment rights to express themselves, and they want to see t…

ok, so i just got back from the liquor store (not camping anymore), and i was listening to analord, and was just a few buildings down from where i live, and i saw this cute little kitty. maybe a few weeks old. i stopped and petted it for a while, and tried to find where exactly it came from, there is no collar on its neck. so i wished it luck, and tried to walk home, but it kept chasing me, and so i kept trying to make it go back to where it originally was, and i played that game for about 10 minutes, then decided to just leave it. well, it followed me home, and in doing so, i think its probably lost all sense of direction do i go back down and grab the little guy? is…

So whenever i'm eating I like to throw on a nice ole' youtube video - usually I'm in front of the laptop with the warm food steadily getting cooler - so I opt out of searching for videos and fall back on some youtube channels I enjoy...however i'd love some recommendations to expand my possible viewing experiences! at the moment i'm only really hoping between Cinemassacre/Angry Video Game Nerd and Botchamania videos (sad, I know) http://www.youtube.com/user/JamesNintendoNerd http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTNITbvF96C4Yxyh7eyIeuA So post us your best channels, please

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd-r_O0YlVo No release date set, as of yet, but will be showing in Toronto this weekend. Looks like there's a cameo from Chris Morris in this one too. And it looks like it's gonna hit me right in the feels, just like Submarine did.

When I was a kid I apparently had frequent traumatizing nightmares, and my parents were worried. But oddly enough there's only one that I remember, I and still remember it vividly to this day. I'm curious if any of you have nightmares like this, that stuck with you well into adulthood, and if so, what they are. I think it might be cool to read a thread of vivid nightmares. I'll start with mine I guess. It's a little embarrassing because in retrospect it's practically a textbook example of a fear of growing up. I was probably about 5 or 6. I was playing dress up with my brother. In the dream we had a chest full of costumes to play with, but in real life we ha…

Read between the lines guys. Anyone feel like Carrie's bi=polar hijinx and "sleeping with the enemy" draw eerie parallels with the US policies in Syria and the geopolitical situation in the Middle East?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMwIBkShyzw I did an earnest search to make sure no one else has posted about this. This is one of the finest things I've discovered in a long time. People joke that it's so tense, and I get that joke, but there is a strange kind of tension there. My favorite part about it though is how much the dialogue, especially that of the two main characters, reminds me of playing Shenmue. If you loved Shenmue as one of the digital masterpieces of the 20th century for its strengths and flaws equally, then you will want to check this out.

What really is the "truth" about Syria? Are we aware of it on a larger, eschatological sense? What is the point of such actions? How do they bring us towards the greater ends of existence? Discuss.

So it seems there have been a couple attempts to use giant guns to launch objects into space. The image above is of project HARP, a project that was started by the American and Canadian defence departments and abandoned in 1967. The guns are now just sitting around in the Barbados jungle. These seem to be the most IDM examples of space guns. More info here: http://www.slate.com/blogs/atlas_obscura/2013/07/03/project_harp_a_giant_space_gun_in_barbados_is_now_abandoned.html The guy who built these also tried building some for Saddam Hussein, in a project called Project Babylon. He was assissinated before finishing the project. It seems that what was built is now sit…

I just moved to Van a few weeks ago and was curious if any of the Vancouver WATMM folks knew of any good live electronic music/noise/metal/'experimental' sort of stuff going on in the city. I have tickets to Plaid which is tomorrow and I went and saw FaltyDL a week ago, any other good shows coming up? Or any regular events worth checking out? Thanks!

Hey all, What is your real name?! I understand if you don't want to post first AND last names. But.... We all go by these screen-names.. It would be interesting to see what your real names are, honestly! I guess I can start. My name is Kevin Applegate Holy fuck shit goddamn. That's so dis-similar to my screen-name! =) Edit: Just cunting with you. My real name is Stephen Gautreau. French last name, I know. I'm not even 1% French. My family changed their name during the war to avoid prosecution. =)
