My TR606 Arrived

1st day with the 606. Just to be a nerd I made a track to compare it with my other analogue drum box, the vastly more powerful JoMoX Airbase 99. I have to say I prefer the 606's snare - it's meatier and it has waaay more presence. The JoMoX snare is classier and way more tweakable, but it needs a lot of TLC to cut through. I'm pretty sure the JoMoX can do a 606 kick without really trying. I like how the 606 hats are bright but not too harsh right out of the box. This is something you need to tweak a bit for on teh JoMoX (it wants to do nasty 909 hats most of the time). The JoMoX has proper velocity on its hats tho, which is hella cool for hip hop. L…

I want to create interesting melodies with this technique, and try and incorporate some key changes etc with proper cadences. any tips you could give me? maybe my request is a little vague but hey.. i'm curious what you know of this fine art.

sequencing (midi)

im fucking tired of cubase sx those little squares and drum grid are reaaally not intuitive. i was wondering if you guys could give me advice on other more intuitive and fast ways to sequence complex drum tracks. i was thinking a drum machine or something, but i still want to have control over the velocity and be able to move the notes a little bit and not have it hard-quantized to 16ths or whatever. by the way, id like to sequence sounds in a s5000 akai. I HATE POINTING SHIT WITH MY MOUSE AND CLICKING AND DRAGGING AND OPENING WINDOWS ARG

Any views? Anyone got one or used one? I remember playing around with one in Turnkey (Tottenham Court Road) about 7 years ago. They seem pretty powerful. You get 7 parellel fx which in my mind is pretty awesome and I think about 8 part multitimbral which I think is pretty reasonable too. Does any modern Synth module beat this? I'm also looking at the Clavia Nord Rack 2 X. What do you reckon guys? How do they compare or am I asking a stupid question?

Hooking a 606 up to MIDI rig
by Guest analogue wings- 14 replies
- 1.5k views
I have the chance to get a cheap 606 today. I quite like the idea of tru analogue hats as the hybrid/909 style ones on my JoMoX are a bit harsh. Since the 606 doesnt have MIDI, what kind of hoops will I have to jump through if I want to hook one up to my midi rig for just its hats? I'm thinking a 606 MIGHT be the cheapest way to get analogue cymbals, since no one makes a standalone cymbal module...

Ok, so all I need help with is finding the best way for my audio interface, mixer (ub802), synth, and monitors to communicate. Here is a pic of the mixer with all it's I/Os I think the only possible way is just a one way communication from my mixer to my soundcard, then to my monitors, :on2long:

Ever get so obsessed with a tune that you can't move on? About this time last year I downloaded a Japanese ambient mix off some obscure club site... there was this one tune I couldn't stop listening to... and to top it off, the sounds it used were like nothing I'd ever heard before in electronic music... So for the past year, as much as I've really not intended to, I'd spent most days reverse engineering this tune and trying to nail every last sound - every drum beat, ambience, melody line - and every month or so I learn something new, and get a step closer... It took me about a day to figure out how to do Future Engineers style dnb programming - this has t…

Since I see that the last activity in the Gear Box was in late February, I've decided to be ~bad~ again. One of my microKORGs for sale on eBay HERE. I bet I can take so many insults for putting it here.

Hey, I've come across someone selling a CM Labs Motor Mix for $200. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it good? I believe its the first gen... without touch sensitive faders. How big a deal is that? Any info would be greatly appriciated. Thanks!

intrested in opinions of those who have used both. i've been learning max for 3 years i know reaktor is probably far simpler as objects are pre-assembled at a higher level but i'd be interested in peoples thoughts.

Compression, why bother? 1 2 3
by Guest chunky- 71 replies

Why compress everything? You can just use the volume knob. I know vocals sound a little better in a song with compression quite often, but I am surprised by how many people just throw a compression fire blanket over a track. You want the track to be like a fire! Music's gotta be smokin'! What do you use compressors to do? Why? Is it worth it? Well, I am curious to know what people here think about the overuse of compression. :jedi:

Using Fruity Loops to control synths
by Guest meneedit- 8 replies
- 1.5k views
Hi there, I just bought myself a MIDI cable for my Alesis "Ion". I'm ready to make some kick-ass music. What I want to do is use fruityloops to control my synth then record the melodies using the keyboards 'audio out' leads. So basically I just want to place notes on the piano roll and those notes will play through the keyboard however, I haven't been able to find one single thing on the net that actually goes through step by step, and tells me how to control the synth. can somebody who uses Fruityloops please explain to me how to do this? That would be fantastic. Thank you. :smiling:

yeah so i want it to be multitimbral 16 channels. to be able to play sixteen channels at the same time large polyphony i know, i mean, i think the andromeda fits this description something with 16 outputs, andromeda has that right? would be cool right now i'm running ableton as midi sequencer into my groovebox which is multitimbral multi polyphony etc. would like to get something with richer sounds and more tweakablity, synthesis than my rm1x yeah not getting a synth right now, but one of these days. by the time i actually have a large cash flow to blow on a synth i'll probably have to ask this question again but, well, i was just interested sounds like what i'm …
