  2. Everything, let me repeat that, everything Weatherall has had a hand in is worth immersing yourself in. If you do that, you'll find undiluted gold. Easy being gushy or nostalgic but the bloke is an institution. If you broaden your perspective, he's up there with Martin Hannett & Richard H Kirk. If you lived in the grey world acid house emerged out of, Weatherall was like some surreal Balearic Berkshire prophet ushering in a new mindscape. Listen to "Bomba". Or dig through the orig Boy's Own zines, cos that's (mostly) his writing & his ideas throughout. The way it mixed music &

  5. hey guys! Good news - Machine Funk Volume 1 is now shipping in the USA! Now you can get it through Biosoft Records without the prohibitive Tax, Customs and insane shipping costs from Europe. have to get in on it though cause there are NOT VERY MANY and they will absolutely, without a single doubt, sell out very quickly Click here -----> https://cygnusat.bandcamp.com/album/machine-funk-vol-1 <------- 3x12" Vinyl records, 79 minutes of ludicrously nerdy electro & funk inspired by the 1984 comic book mini-series by Barry Windsor Smith Purchase of the V

  6. This might read as patronising, but start at the beginning & wade in. Maybe break things down to engineering props initially for a raft of more mainstream acts, the list is metaphorically endless. At least that way you wouldn't miss gems like St Etienne's Only Love Can Break Your Heart et al. Bocca Juniors & Dayglo Maradona releases have aged wonderfully, equally so many Boy's Own records, jfc. Two Lone Swordsmen i'm down with up until about Stay Down, previously The Fifth Mission & Stockwell Steppas are/were marvels. Likewise w/Sabres, start with Discogs & enjoy! My

  7. yeah im under 25 and i think if i strain hard enough with my horrible memory i can just about make a tiny case for there being differences at the crossover point of the end of the decade (actually i think im mainly thinking from 2005-2015) i reckon my generation was the last generation to grow up to about 15/16 before getting inundated with technology. the kids born after (born in 1999ish) are basically on their fuckin phones since 8-9 maybe 10, and even less, their attention span is undoubtedly fucked from the get go and everyone became straight retarded, constantly looking for their nex

  9. hey sine, this is really good! all the elements on the track fit well in my opinion, the melody and the overall build up keeps me interested throughout. the only thing that i would change is the snare sound that starts at 0:59, it's a bit dry and it stands out more than it should imo. also maybe try to slowly change the sound of the melody synth from the 2nd half onwards? smth as simple as increasing the resonance, the release, or playing around with the delay effect could elevate the song even more.

  12. let's see...at least in the 'western' nations... a continued dilution of meaning as neologisms coined in either academia or internet subcultures trickle down into popular and political speech, furthering incoherence and miscommunication in anglo and european countries. the ability for many to achieve a common context for communication is further weakened by the proliferation of many competing narratives for interpreting history and the current moment. They are really affectations, simulacra used as symbols in an economy of attention where meaning is an afterthought. false populisms contin

  13. /shrug There were some decent tunes before he became mentally ill // an internet meme // full blown retarded. Personally, I only really like a few of the tunes from 808s & Heartbreaks, but even then, Kid Cudi and co were doing it better. He's just a spectacle. Same as his wife, or his buddy Trump. I don't even know why this thread is on watmm frankly. ;{

  14. Completely agree. Culturally, the 1950's - 1990's are so clearly delineated when we think of them. Pop culture from each decade was pretty unique to that time period, and almost instantly recognizable when we absorb it now. I think it's globalization & the internet's fault that pop culture from 2001 - 2019 is just one big soulless, confused, unoriginal mess...

  15. In my lifetime the biggest difference between two consecutive decades was between 80s and 90s. Everything seemed to change suddenly. Collapse of the communist governments in former soviet states and East Europe, the end of Cold War, music changed from hair metal and synth pop to grunge, hip hop and techno, fashion changed completely etc. Then 90s basically ended finally with the 9/11 attacks and the war on terror. So 90s was quite distinct time, imo. '00s and 2010s don't really have that feel. They just blur into one another without a clear border. And at the moment it does not feel there

  16. OK gang - what do we have here. Well we have the CW compilation CD filed under CAT 009 CD. AB3 (CAT 008) was released in 1993 but this one came out in 1998. They must have decided early on that there would be a compilation put out to collect those early CW 12"s. Those were some of the first Rephlex records out there and correct me if I'm wrong, but are Pop Corn and R2D2 the only tracks not included on this comp? They are good tracks and it's too bad they're not on here however I happen to love this CD. This compilation was also repressed as 3x12s"...

  17. morning watmm! i have a lot of music on my external disks. alot of which is just sitting there waiting to be discovered. i used to be happy with foobar2000 but now i'm on a mac, so i'm stuck with gnarly vlc. vlc is a very good video player, not a very good music player. having used the good itunes (back in the days) and spotify now i'm also realizing that i need more of a music library app – not just a player – to categorize, shuffle, search and discover my music. it's uninspiring and boring to dig through tons of files and directories with no album art or...

  20. i've meant ot look into it for a long time but i'm still using itunes basically as something that dumps playlists and library onto my old ass ipod. doing a full transfer to a new app is daunting because i'm worried about shit just disappearing because fucking apple. i got a new HD for my library because existing one is full up. copied entire contents of the drive to the new drive and directed itunes to find it and still it gives "these songs couldn't be found" type bullshit when syncing to the ipod.. it's like 98 songs or something. so i need to do some kind of detective work...

  24. Yeah, I understand what you mean. I do wonder if what shapes public discourse these days is less what's "easy" to talk about as much as what is sensational. It's the sort of stuff that Tocqueville warned about (love of novelty, tyranny of the masses, etc.). It's not surprising that things have turned out this way - a culture that is driven by neoliberal economic policies is going to inevitably fall prey to a steadily diminishing capacity for extended focus and rational thought in favor of whatever fires the most dopamine receptors the fastest. I blame Candy Crush. Anyway, "dishonest man

  26. I know this thread is supposed to be about 2020-2029 and we're mostly discussing 2000-2019 but fuck it, here's another digression. I feel that internet everywhere & everything being posted online has taken away the excitement of travelling to another city. I mean I can use google street view to wander around, can click on any bar/restaurant to see pictures inside, the menu, etc., can read other peoples trip reports, can watch recent videos showing people mulling about, starring at their phones, and looking exactly like everyone in every other city. After doing that, I'm like...that's

  29. i'd agree that idm is healthily in its dad-rock phase with this one. seems like everyone is noodling on their modulars these days. that being said, i think there is a nice emotional quality to this release and i like how the timbre of the songs are quite different but it still sticks together as a whole. main complaint would be that its too short. we've been playing it in the office quite a bit and its a nice thing to work to.

  32. Do you honestly believe this? I think it’s the opposite, man. Also he makes what he wants along with the 14-15 other people that he needs to write a song. I don’t think he can do much alone. The fact that people think this guy is a genius is what triggers folks. He has to be the biggest troll there is. It is a corporate product in the largest way. Way more so than boy bands and that shit.

  35. creepy and massive and slick and creepy. all that shit rolled up together is marketing. plain and simple. kanye has enlisted himself to market jesus and the church and that's all i can say about this really. it's fucking marketing and you know what bill hicks says about marketing. really.. just kanye full up on jesus as the answer to his problems.. the end of his search for whatever. it's corrupt. this shit is evangelism the way americans know how to do it. consumerism, branding etc.

  36. good work there! i use eloquencer too. nice work on the drum programming and very nice pads and bleepy bits. The sound in general is a bit squashed up which maybe you are going for, but i think if you turned everything down - leave more headroom - and work on the mix more, and then run it through a mastering plugin, it could sound better. but i get it that you are working with a big time limitation, which means you got a lot done in the time you had. well done.

  39. What exactly was so wrong with this thread that it got this reaction? As for interpretations or whatever, I've got a pretty strong idea of what the story of vordhosbn is to me at least (I've only really been a fan for a year and a half though so this will probably change), but I see the drum pattern(s) as some sort of destructive force, like the hi hats build up to a higher point (in terms of pitch) and then drop into a kick, like a bomb dropped from a plane. At 0:51 that synth that comes in seems to be warning against that destructive behavior or whatever, and...
