  1. Just got notice that Pulse State will release Buspin Jieber's new 20-track album tomorrow, available as a limited run CD and digital; colour me enthusiastic - I adore everything he's released already, V.H.S. Volcanic/Harmonic/Sounds on Touched is a brilliant introduction. Here's the first taster of the new album:

  2. not reading but i'm just gonna assume it's a bunch of boring rock & pop classics again, but this time with more token identity group representation

  4. lol 🙂 I've played a decent amount of traditional African music (stuff like gahu, atsia, atsiagbekor, agbadza from Ghana, a bit of sabar from Senegal) that's just drumming & singing. All those styles have at least one part that marks just the offbeats with nothing on the onbeat. So the Dopplereffekt bassline just feels natural this way, in fact it's really similar to a particular Ghanaian drum rhythm. CK playing Agbadza (this is in 12/8).

  5. This could be jazz but I found this excellent Alien channel on YouTube. There’s plenty to go through (never knew about the lost Burke cocoon scene). This clip was interesting where all the Alien 5 artwork and speculations are gathered

  6. Tom Middleton's new album as GCOM, varied fare from ambient through downtempo to drum'n'bass. Pre-order at Bleep, more clips at Juno.

  8. this record fucking rules my god. every sound is just so perfect and round, just like pure lushness and depth. i was listening to this today lying on my couch before a storm came in and it was so perfect, just so chill and dreamy. kind of reminds me a bit of Sterac - but imo Aril has a deeper sound, Steric's is a bit more clean (in a good way though, no dis). anyway, just wanted to have a thread for us to post about this one. https://artofvengeance.bandcamp.com/album/deeparture-in-time-revisited

  9. Of course it's out of place after Aliens. It's on Fiorina, while Hadley's Hope is on LV-426, duuuuuh! But seriously, I liked the setting of Alien 3. The movie is good, and it holds well in the Alien universe, imho.

  10. Of all times? I see no cavemen pebble rock, or greek lyre ambient, and what about Genghis' Yurt Throaters?!

  11. Weird... so the front has the logo from ON, the disjointed Aphex Twin logo from SAW II and then the back says "Selected Ambient Works" in the font from SAW I, but then has the "piechart" icons from SAW II

  13. I like Alien 3, great cast - Charles Dance especially - though it gets whack at the end with Michael Bishop Weyland and the style of Ripley's death (IMO) Tonally matches the first film, but feels out of place after Aliens. The studio fucked the franchise long before Ridley Scott took two prolonged shits over everything.

  15. "Danny Elfman is a living legend and I was thrilled to be asked to do a remix for him," added Squarepusher. "I chose 'We Belong' partly because it's in E flat, which is a nice escape from guitar-friendly tonalities, and also because I was especially drawn to the vocal elements. For instrumentation I used some of my old analogue hardware including a Yamaha CS-80." https://metalinjection.net/av/new-music/danny-elfman-drops-squarepusher-remix-of-we-belong?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

  16. The Audible show they did for Gibson's script is quite good, Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen both star. https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Alien-III-Audiobook/B07QY1FVDT?ipRedirectOverride=true&source_code=M2M30DFT1Bk13006152102O6&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1ouKBhC5ARIsAHXNMI-60Sl8G3pWhNLgcWiYN7kTEk6CSmEcrZsrVXg309Lpk53BHeMVBc8aAkIuEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

  19. Pretty sure this is the exception to their principle. I've always heard this song like you describe, with the intro, the verse, the breakdown and the last hit of the song landing on the one - with the cymbal crashes denoting the downbeat of every new phrase. And then you have the hi hats counting "cheekily" and the breakdown snares being syncopated. I aligned the two interpretations of the meter with a metronome, and the hi hats is the only thing that makes sense in the first version. Even with the metronome screaming ONE for every bar, you can't really hear it musically. In other noted examples - like Spirits...

  21. tried to use a little ingenuity and this is a burgerable screenrecording but hey whatever 1 2 3 4 PAP PAP PAP PAP i think it's relatively clear what i'm demonstrating here, just to prove what IOS is saying up ^ but i didn't get too complex trying to replicate the previously mentioned drumbeat...just wanted to track the 1 and see how it fell when pseudo-isolating the snare in the track (and obv adding a stock snare sound to match with)

  22. I checked it out, tempo is 110bpm (or 220bpm, whichever suits. I prefer 110). Song starts on the one. Haake's then enters with cheeky hi-hats in the offbeats like The bit that starts at 0:32 has bass drum and snare drum like this:

  25. Bigeneric is one of those hugely underrated artists who have been around forever, making immense and immersive earworms. This double album is more ambient in nature to a lot of his other stuff, but just as essential. FYI - There is also a 2xcd/4xLP set available from the usual vendors.

  29. The whole UFOlogy and UFO religion is a well researched phenomenon among those studying comparative religion. Depending on how you define religion it has many hallmarks that could be considered religious. Instead of angels and gods, you have benign aliens from space who will save us etc.

  30. Arpanet - Quantum Transposition (RePHLeX). I was vacillating between getting the digital instead of the CD, but I wanted the physical to fill the hole in my RePHLeX collection (which already had this on vinyl). I was actually quite surprised that the digital is officially available, but it's very expensive. I'll most probably pick up Transllusion's L.I.F.E. next, it doesn't seem to be available for purchase digitally; I do have that one on vinyl, too, but I can't take that with me to work.

  32. Built a MegaCommand last year but fucked something up which resulted in having the screen seated in some headers which made it very difficult to make an enclosure for it. Since I had some extra pcb's left I'd figure I'd redo it some day but kept putting it off because of the price of the apem buttons that are needed. Finally managed to desolder the buttons from the old one thanks to some chipquik and a hot air station. Do hope this is the last time I decide to try to make an enclosure after building something and then taking all the measurements. So tedious and so little room for...

  33. Spent the last 2 weeks in Cardiff Wales for a work project. Very little masking happening there. Lots of coughing everywhere. Because of the tight restrictions on international travel (at least with the airline I’m flying on), I’ve had to test multiple times and log the results so that I can fly home without quarantine. It’s been interesting… Cardiff is fucking great btw. Flying out from London tomorrow (currently staying near Heathrow) and it doesn’t seem a whole lot better here either. I’m almost clear. On my trip out, people were pretty good about masking but fuck me if every little kid or baby on that plane wasn’t sick as...

  34. This album is so dope, I second the opinion that it gets better with every listen. Stott is so good at pushing forward his really unique sound. Not unlike autechre; where you hear a track and right away can tell it is an autechre track, but they are always methodically probing into new territory and pushing the parameters of their own sound. Loving the reverb drenched tones and the ambient tracks; they make the drum work stand out when it comes back around.

  36. i put up my own LP of 'lying on the floor...' on soulseek in 2005 as Autechre's Untilted and a large percentage of the people who downloaded it (around 50%) said they thought the real Untilted was fake and that mine was real.
