  2. alco review by alco: this is the new "autechre" album by them, the brothers. it's called "sign" which is short for "signs." i believe this is an m night shaymalan (or whatever) reference and i believe the "liquid" and "aquatic" aesthetic is a direct reference to this film. iirc the film is about aliens who visit earth but the water is too wet for them and they freak out. hence the autechre album "sign," in other words the wet one by the brothers. this album was given to me in strictest confidence by sean, one of the two brothers who go by "the 'chre." no one has heard i

  3. the autechre brothers. "the signs" in 2020. october. i forget the date. i'm meeting up with them, the "boys" of autechre. sean, the one who thinks its sick to make beats super wacky is smoking a cigarette. a "joint." i don't know what he's thinking. he's vaping actually. robert, the shy one who does lush pads on the nord modular. he's just sitting there. we're watching youtube. sam keeps checking out videos like "top FIVE tips for using a PATCH BAY" and rob keeps going "lol" at this. i ask them my interview questions: - what was it like to make this album? SAM: we were just messing

  7. i go to the venue at 5:45am even though the concert doesn't start until 9pm. i've never heard of "the autechre brothers" but if i'm going to a concert i want good seats. inside the venue it turns out there are no seats it's something called "standing room only" which i have never heard of. that's strike one (1) against sean and rob of "the duo." i order a bottle of wine but i am told they do not do bottle service here. i mourn the entire lack of japanese whisky available and opt to drink from my flask of homemade spirits. i proceed to get wasted as i make...

  9. 2020 was positive for Autechre. A sentence that does not fit many artists in the crisis year. With SIGN and PLUS, Sean Booth and Rob Brown released two albums on their house and farm label Warp. The first in particular was featured in numerous annual best lists and, with its timelessly beautiful melodies, provided a musical highlight of the last year. After the sprawling elseq and NTS parts, the introverted veterans also returned to the conventional album format with which they irrevocably inscribed themselves in the history of electronic music, especially in the nineties. At the beginnin

  10. Hey guys. I don't remember the last time I've posted here. I have drifted away from this place. Nothing against it. Just me growing old I guess. Some of you may remember me. I've been on watmm since its inception. back in the joyrex.com days. I'm just chiming in to let you guys know that I've been diagnosed with Kidney Cancer back in October 2019. I've been fighting with some advancements and set backs along the way. I was on immunotherpy from December to February. I had a reaction to the treatment that almost made me lose kidney function. So they took me off immunotherapy and put me on o

  11. That Humo thing’s full of misquotes. Some of it’s prob just translation errors, or him not understanding the accent or getting words wrong but some is straight up not what we said at all and totally made up. Some of it’s the literal opposite of what we said. You should ask the journo to release the recording but he prob won’t do that. It is funny though esp the bit about Radiohead, almost wish we’d actually said that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  12. Just want to add something I think is important to this thread, without taking away from tributes and grieving. I also don't want to assume or claim to know Phil's particular situation. But I have read that in the last year (may 2019-may 2020) in America marked the highest number of overdose deaths ever recorded. That is a scary statistic. I just want any watmmers who are dealing with substance abuse disorders of any kind to know that you are not alone. I'm no expert here but just want to say that online community can be one avenue to seek help, in addition to your irl community and other

  13. I ended up waiting until this past Saturday for my first listen to SIGN. I had a few buddies over and sat outside in my backyard with a raging fire and did some star photography. The warmth and colors of the fire as well as staring at the stars lent very well to the overall mood of this album (as well as various substances :P). I obviously had read a bunch about it and was keeping up with this thread but I definitely took away my own views from this and further listens. First impressions were just that it was crazy warm, lush and hyper-detailed. M4 Lema, Metaz form8, schmefd...

  14. I am very upset and have been since I found out last night. Extremely sad thing to read. Phil was an extraordinarily unique person and a kind soul. I remember when I joined watmm I was 16 and there weren't many other posters my age. Salvy was a year younger than me and was already online and posting away - back then his av was that smiling alaskan woman- i'm sure some of you remember. He had a baobab tree growing out of his head with its leaves extending to the heavens. Phil really loved idm and all types of music and was an accomplished singer, bassist and piano player...

  15. ios and i have been working on the mix and we're currently on revision #6. things have been getting better but all along the way something has still seemed off, like there was something missing. after a while we finally figured out what it is: at around 26:10 in the bootleg recording you can hear someone in the audience say "this doesn't sound like autechre but... there's 2 guys on the stage." we realized that the reconstruction we are working on just would not be complete without this line included as it has become such an essential part of the show for us. we are currently working on id

  16. A little project I've been working on in between writing my own stuff. I've always been fascinated with SAW 85-92 and how it was created, as there's not a whole lot of info about it on the internet. I thought it would be a fun challenge to try to recreate some of the tracks to maybe find out myself, through trial an error, how some of it was made.

  17. this has really hit me in a way i never would have predicted. i've been on this forum since like 2004 (?) and i guess i never really properly understood the bonds you have to people on here. i still don't understand them! almost every single person i've interacted with here has been on the forum alone. i've met a few people, made irl friends with a few people (encey got ordained and officiated my wedding lol. but i'm divorced now so maybe he did it wrong) and have some peeps i know i could hang with if the moment arose - i could definitely get a boa and go...

  21. I don't know what you're all complaining about . Under Trump we have had ten hours of studio releases from Ae and something like 30 hours of soundboards, as well as the best aphex music since the early 2000s. Under Obama we only had eight or so studio hours of Ae, syro and a bunch of random EPs and soundcloud dump, possibly the worst ever squarepusher period and a forgettable BOC album. I think we can all agree that the best administration for this forum was under George Dubya with the confield thru quaristice run, drukqs to rushup, geogaddi, and go plastic to hello ev

  22. i only listen to music in scientific environments. the first thing i do is request that the mayor shut down the city, so as to eliminate the intrusive sounds from my surroundings. next i assassinate the local wildlife as they are known to produce unwanted sounds. then i go into my anechoic chamber where i have my cloud and drive set up so that i can listen to "digital vinyls," a medium so flawless christ himself is like "hey dad send me down there again i want to check out digitals." in this way i experience the most proper, efficient, convenient, superior, immaculate hearings and receivings o

  27. Well after 7 days in a row treating 40-odd patients daily without any available PPE I unsurprisingly came down with coronavirus symptoms on Monday. All feels a bit weird at home as my wife (who also works in the NHS) has been evacuated to a hotel so she can continue to work. Means I spend the day pottering around in a dressing gown listening to zoviet france or the NTS sessions. I've felt much worse than this with flu before, but I'm aware it's only day 3...

  28. Here's a 24bit wav render with no master bus effects i.e., no limiter, compressor etc. I does have however all the level tweaks and effects in all the stems. https://we.tl/t-ftWAX27t4K Donations - I tried linking to the same charity that Sean Booth had mentioned during his March 2020 webcasts on mixlr. That link seems to have expired now, but it was for this organisation: https://www.crisis.org.uk/ Lovely people, all your thank yous and comments are massively appreciated. Any suggestions about this unofficial mix, PM me, I'll make a list and share with digit. Will give this

  29. All I'll say here is, this was effing super-challenging material to mix; Ae make it so effortlessly awesome-sounding in their live sets/releases. The more you work with this material, the more you think "WHAT THE FUCK, I could tell just by listening to it that it must have taken a lot of work, but this is bonkers!!" And then you go and compare what you've recreated/mixed to the boot, and you realise there's fuckin MORE to it. And then you remember that you never had to spend time crafting the sounds on the various synths they used.

  33. Aight, so, the other night I said to my wife: "Hey hon, I'm going to the store later, do you want anything?" It seemed like such an innocuous request. Little did I know it would turn into my own personal Kobashi Maru. "Oh, yeah, could you pick me up some cookies?" Ok, so far, so good. "But, um, don't get me any of the cookies you usually do." Ah... ok, so- "Oh, and don't get me any of the types of cookies I usually like." I could feed my brain beginning to lock down, the equivalent of asking a robot in 1980's sci fi to resolve a paradox. I thought...
