I've been really lucky to see some great movies in the past few days (I am also unemployed). The French Connection (4/5) - Still holds up. Everyone talks about that car chase because its fucking wild and was done without any permits. Bug (4/5) - Only a great director like William Friedkin can sustain the batshit insanity of the 2nd half of this movie. As someone who has had both bed bugs and crippling insomnia, I related to it a bit too much? The Dark Knight Rises (2.5/5)- While the first half is entertaining, this thing is a bloated mess. Hoped it would be better on a rewatch but no. There is a great little moment of batman being illuminated by muzzle flashes in the dark. To Live and Die in L.A. (4/5) - Pure entertainment that oozes 80s style. The Wang Chung soundtrack and the title credits are particularly memorable. Maybe not the deepest movie ever made but what the hell. First Reformed (5/5) - This may be one of the best movies of the past 10 or 20 years. I am a sucker for the subject matter, though. Perfectly in tune with the dread of 2020. Ida - (5/5) - This was incredible. They found the lead actress in a cafe! what the hell, she is phenomenal. Cold War - (4/5) - Same director as Ida. Not as good, but the atmosphere and cinematography are really something.

I am really enjoying Raised by Wolves. The first few episodes felt like bonkers, off-the-rails sci-fi. I think fans of Prometheus and Alien Covenant (yes we exist) will dig it. Binge watched The Boys, as well. Season 2 is not as good so far but its pretty damn refreshing amidst all the superhero cliches in today's culture.

looks pretty great! wish they used the choral hans zimmer music from the teaser but i get that this is also a mass market film. It makes me smile knowing just how many nerds in december will be leaning into their girlfriends ear trying to explain what the fuck a Butlerian Jihad is before the next scene.

this guy is crazy good. there is something so unique about his style. i imagine it is really easy to make boring ambient, yet his work always has this hazy, hypnotic feeling.

It's a bit dull but then again, Tomorrow's Modern Boxes really grew on me a few years later, and is now like a hazy lazy saturday morning staple for me. The animated loops for each song in Spotify when in player mode are really great. Each song has its own little animated gifs triggered throughout the duration of the song.

Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) - That was the worst thing I have seen in a while. No suspense, none of it worked. A shame, since the director's first movie "Nightcrawler" was incredible. 4/10 The Guilty (2018) - I would call this a must-see. Basically you are watching an emergency dispatchers face for an hour and a half, yet it feels like being on a rollercoaster. 9/10 Happy New Year, Colin Burstead (2018) - A nice return to form for Ben Wheatley. Family drama that jumps from room to room. He said he tried to shoot it like a war film. 9/10

Fictions by Jorge Luis Borges. For years his writing has seemed right up my alley, but I always got turned off by the endless barrage of details and names. While I still find the prose a bit of a clunky read, it could very well be a translation issue. Nevertheless, "The Library of Babel" is one of the greatest short stories and concepts I have ever read. Recommended for that one alone. Interviews with Francis Bacon. This had some really fascinating insights into the artist. There is a moment where he claims he wanted to paint a mouth full of teeth as beautifully as others can a sunset. Speak, Memory by Vladimir Nabokov. While I don't 100% love any of his books, the perfectly crafted writing aways leaves me impressed. As far as autobiographies go, this one did something unique by recollecting seemingly unimportant impressions and moments from childhood.

Ok so the new Halloween film is not scary but it has some insane stylistic flourishes. There is a smash cut to the title credits that took my fucking breath away. The score is like a beefed-up more menacing version of the first. Nice.

So I'm watching Mandy and like... I had major major problems with his first film Beyond the Black Rainbow. Its like his movies are developed from the outside in, and therefore feel hollow. The weaknesses in pacing and directing just don't feel intentional... Maybe I'm getting old or something, but I have a feeling that John Carpenter could direct the shit out of a scene of people talking at a table, whereas Panos could not. Ah well.

Room to Dream - The new David Lynch Autobiography. I inhaled this thing. Some really nice insights for the hardcore fans. Also the second half of each chapter is in Lynch's own words, and they transcribe it very closely to how he speaks, so its a fuckin hoot, baby. The Complete Short Prose of Samuel Beckett, 1929-1989 - Reading this now. I have sort of an abusive relationship with this author in that I rarely enjoy it but I keep coming back because I find it fascinating. The closest writing will get to a nervous breakdown. Should I be scared that I relate so closely to these mumbling, messed up and lost narrators? His early prose was a little more coherent and humorous, which is a real pleasure to discover.

First Reformed - Felt like a spiritual sequel to Taxi Driver. Very bleak and well done. There is a corny execution of a trippy, ambient, pseudo-sexual sequence, but i was still into it because it gave me an Altered States feeling. 8/10 Shadows in Paradise - A movie about a lonely garbage collector. The lead actor may be one of the coolest son of a guns on film. I may be addicted to Aki Karusimaki movies now. Also, I have realized that the perfect movie length is just over an hour, for my add social media addicted brain. For fans of Wes Anderson and Jim Jarmusch. 8/10
