I think whether the tree grows or not is dependent on the amount of light it gets.
Saplings can be planted on any dirt or grass block, and will grow into a new tree if they are exposed to a light level of at least 12, and have at least 5 empty blocks above the sapling "block" itself. They will pop out of the ground if they are not exposed to a light level of at least 8, but will not pop out of the ground if they do not have enough headroom, provided they still have sufficient light. In this way they can be used as decoration in structures provided they don't have room to grow into full trees, or are never exposed to a light level of 12 or more. This also applies to saplings in The Nether.A light level of 12 is provided by an adjacent torch, so saplings can grow into trees underground with just one adjacent torch. It should be noted that while moonlight has a brightness of 4, saplings will not pop out of the ground when exposed to moonlight - they will survive low light provided they have a "clear view" of the sky.
Silent running?
aha! it's the headroom that's causing me problems. i knew about the light.

woah, where did all these comments come from?
if i want to permanently remove something, i use MSCONFIG or services.msc (to stop a service).
i find this most useful for the in-depth analysis it provides - much better than that of, say, hijackthis.de

playing games is good for your mental agility and reflexes, regardless of your age.

i'm a jeans-only man. but they have to be the right jeans. right fit, but more importantly, right feel. cheap jeans feel gritty and rough against my skin, and as i suffer from eczema, that's a no-go. of course uber-expensive designer iain c jeans are a total waste of money, so it's all about striking a comfortable balance.
next up: i bought a t-shirt, and i bought some yoghurt ;)
