A plastic device with buttons, sort of like a long TV remote but circular was wrapped around my forehead. I turned to Nicholas Cage and said “It’s a Node Noggin, a kind of computer interface.” Everyone was laughing with glee, partly at how I looked but partly to say ‘this is the world we live in now’.

That was really incredible. I was worried that I had too high expectations or something just because I was really looking forward to this but I was genuinely blown away by the presence of their sound when the beats kicked in. It might be a cliched metaphor but it did feel like being in the middle of some kind of spaceship battle! I thought the sound system was great this time, deep but not muddy and crisp in the mids. At one point a low frequency oscillator passed through me and it modulated my vision sort-of in the same way you can see a speaker cone move. Never experienced that before. The set had a lot of similar DNA to the 22 soundboards but definitely morphed, mutated and expanded. The highlight was when that heavily swung groove from the second half of the Helsinki 22 set was given a reworking. I also has to stop myself from listening too intently to those demonic spectral synths, you can hear all sorts of voices in there if you let yourself.

OK this gives me an excuse to reach for my vinyl copy of this remix (forgive me for this not-so-humble brag). I know, the flaw is it’s too short! Objectively the delays on the woodblock-like percussion are too groovy!

Rather than start a new thread I’ll piggyback off this one. I saw his Melbourne show a few nights ago and it was excellent as you’d expect. For the first half of the show he played bass, although without any natural electric bass tone coming through, it was all synthesised sounds (and sometimes drum samples or electric piano solos) being controlled by the bass. Many of the early songs actually had thumping four-on-the-floor beats and at certain points it appeared as though the tempo was controlled by his bass as well. He yelled at the audience things like “COME ON YOU MOTHERFUCKERS” and pumped his fists. Between songs some drunk guy yelled out “YOU’RE SQUAREPUSHER” which was true and made Tom laugh.
The lighting rig was intense, there was no projected graphics just fluorescent tubes and rectangular coloured LED arrays. It was all strobing in sync with the music. I was up close to the front and definitely felt like I was having squares pushed into my eyes.
The second half was full of his drill n’ bass style material with some recognisable tracks off Be Up a Hello like Hitsonu and Terminal Slam. The highlight for me though was the unreleased material he played, particularly one long banger of a tune with synthetic scratching. The encore was pretty awesome too, a time-stretched version of Come On My Selector.
On this night Squarepusher was the clear winner.

I think it’s all one connected space. I don’t know if the audience will be be free to roam or will be restricted to part of it though.

I contacted support on their site as I wasn’t able to download the 2016/2018 sets any more and got this response:

I'm really appreciating how with their live set recordings they put out so many variations on a theme. It can be overwhelming to have hours and hours of material to listen to but the strategy is making more sense to me now. Previously I would pick a couple of favourite sets and stick to those but lately I've just been heavily drinking in all the wet 24-bit details found in each one, especially the subtle gastric changes in the 2016/2018 material. There are tiny microcosms of delicate texture in there which I had sort of overlooked as part of a build-up to something, now the quieter it gets the more attention I am paying to it.
