Finally pulled the finger out and submitted my application for a Masters, plus a couple of jobs and junk. I am now feeling like a somewhat responsible human being- 5,511 replies

I'm a good way through Electric Eden by Rob Young, it's a history of British music, mainly folk-based stuff. It really digs into the old pagan origins of folk tunes and stuff, it's pretty fascinating. Comes recommended. Also reading a bunch of classic short stories on the side... Sherlock Holmes and MR James mainly. I ordered From Hell by Alan Moore, it arrived yesterday. Haven't started reading it yet but it's fucking enormous, so I'm psyched for that. Got the collected writings of Hunter S. Thompson pretty cheap (not Fear and Loathing/Campaign Trail, other bits and pieces) and that's going down very nicely indeed. Also about 30 issues into an excellent comic series called Fables.

Holy shit, did anyone ever play a game called Heart Of Darkness for the ps1? Some of the enemies in that were living-shadow type creatures that looked pretty much like this. Triggered a super nostalgia rush for me, these are magnificent. Also, just noticed the cock in the last picture. Nice attention to detail.

Just watched A Field In England, the edits are actually pretty idm right enough. I thought it was pretty awesome, didn't think it was too art-wanky, and some of the shots look and sound absolutely gorgeous. 8/10 I guess? Mushrooms/10, maybe. Incidentally, I love that 17th-century aesthetic- the enormous cloaks and those huge hats, flintlock pistols. Might fire up Witchfinder General or something in that vein next, keep the theme going.

Inception, 9/10. I know I'm pretty late to the party on this one but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm actually slightly surprised that it was such a success at the box office, it seems like the sort of film that ought to have been shot down as 'too complex' by some dildo of an exec and just ended up a low-budget cult film if it got made at all. Definitely a bit of influence from Paprika in there as well. I have to say The Conjuring does look awesome from the trailers/ scoping it out on the interwebs

I'm skint so restrung my electric guitar with gnarly old acoustic strings that were lying around for some reason. Looks and sounds abysmal.- 27,845 replies

I've just begun rereading Perdido Street Station by China Mieville, it's an absolute beaut of a steampunk/fantasy/gonzo adventure. I've also been reading a lot about ancient Egypt, something I used to be absolutely nuts about as a kid. History is awesome.

Get Homicide too. If you're enjoying this definitely check out In Search of Respect by Philippe Bourgois. It's a sociological study of a really deprived Harlem neighbourhood and the drug culture there, it's pretty eye-opening. http://www.amazon.co.uk/In-Search-Respect-Structural-Analysis/dp/0521017114

Read 'Salem's Lot and The Stand while I was on holiday. There's something about Stephen King books that's like getting into a warm bath. They're just so readable and there's no pussying around the supernatural stuff, which some writers tend to do as though they're embarassed about writing about that sort of thing. His books are like China Mieville's in that you can just tell as you're reading them that he just really, really likes monsters and stuff and ain't ashamed to show it.

Just found out that I've graduated with a first and that I actually get a couple of hundred quid from my uni as part of some prize-type thing, which means I can think about getting some new gear in. Really pleased about this!- 5,511 replies

I've been watching a lot of old British horror films and BBC productions lately, stuff along the lines of the original Wicker Man which is awesome. Not scary as such, but it does really well at establishing a creepy, pagan, wrongness vibe that builds up throughout. Also watched The Stone Tape, a 1972 BBC horror one-off. The premise is cool- that ghosts, etc, aren't supernatural but are traumatic events 'recorded' by the actual building itself- but it really hasn't aged well, and Jane Asher ruins it by chewing the scenery and generally being histrionic. It was still worth a watch though. On the other hand, the 1968 black-and-white version of MR James' 'Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You' has aged way better. Really understated acting and it actually manages to be genuinely creepy in places. Totally awesome. About to watch The Blood On Satan's Claw, another gnarly old British folk-horror type film. Really enjoying this type of stuff lately, a lot of it seems to have fallen off the radar
