stupid first world problems you're dealing with
Leon Sumbitches replied to a topic in General Banter
Yeah, I'm very lucky, I'm pretty much fully funded by a scholarship, so it's only reasonable that I go out and earn it. I'm coming up to the end of my first year, so there's still plenty of time to get things on track, just managed to get a bit lost in my own wee bubble over the last few months and was probably deluding myself about being able to do largely theoretical/noodly-wanky stuff. It's a necessary kick up the arse, really. Onwards and upwards...- 27,855 replies

stupid first world problems you're dealing with
Leon Sumbitches replied to a topic in General Banter
Had a big meeting with my PhD supervisors today, both lovely guys, but it looks like unless I go out into the real world and do some interviews and shit then my thesis is in the crapper. Problem is I have absolutely no idea who to talk to/how to approach this. Thinking of talking to people in software/app design because I'm interested in the way people's personal data can be used to map out a picture of them and then intervene in stuff that until recently was totally private, e.g. health apps and the way they kind of 'nudge' people into certain choices. But again, not really sure how to approach this. Kind of a relief in some ways, I've hit a bit of a wall with desk-based/analytical stuff and it's probably something I needed to be pushed into but hoooo boy, have I got a lot of work to do.- 27,855 replies

Does making music stress you out?
Leon Sumbitches replied to Auditor's topic in EKT General Discussion
Definitely doesn't stress me out, making music is magical and fun, especially once you get into it and the hours melt away. I'm paralysed with work atm and am waiting for the beginning of June when I'm just taking a full week off to make tunes. Longing for it. -
What went wrong with the MKII? Got one that's running good so far but you're giving me the fearz

Is marijuana use an unspoken rule for posting on WATMM?
Leon Sumbitches replied to a topic in General Banter
Bought one of those Arizer Air numbers, btw, Cwmbran, absolutely no regrets. A wee gem. -
I play tapes on the reg, either in a little crappy boombox in the kitchen while cooking/doing dishes or on a decentish Nakamichi deck for proper listening. I've never actually paid any money for tapes though, just fill up loads of old blank tapes with whatever takes my fancy off Youtube. Lots of great albums there, in full, for free, and it's a bit of fun for a sad fuck like myself. My dad's got a tape deck still hooked up, not sure how often he uses it though.

stupid first world achievements and successes

Just taught my first lecture, seemed to go reasonably well! My mouth gets appallingly dry when I'm speaking though, as soon as I'm behind a lectern I feel like I've taken an E- 5,511 replies

Decent article about folk horror stuff in the Grundlebag today. Nothing new but sums it up nicely: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/apr/30/folk-horror-cults-sacrifice-pagan-sex-kill-list

Cheers RSP, might well investigate Windows 2000 if I start having performance issues! I initially read that as saying you scored a CZ for $8.50, lol. Sick case though, perfect aesthetics for a synth voyager too. First impressions of the Boss DS-330 are good, have only had an hour or so to play with it; it's basically a limitation machine, full of plastic presets, which means you have to dive straight into trying to coax it into doing things it wasn't necessarily intended to do; on-board reverb is surprisingly decent though and can turn out some pretty lush Legowelt-y stuff. I'm going to invest a bit of time with it soon and get some nice patches locked away in its little banks, turn it into a go-to ambient machine perhaps. I've had a hankering for a Kawai of some variety since seeing this demo in a watmm thread: Reject/under-the-radar/eBay bargain gear is where it's at

I might have to get an XP machine running again just to get Orangator back :D Speaking of which I actually dug out a knackered desktop PC that was languishing in my parents' garage; it was the first PC we got back in the day, 2001-ish. Took it up to my house, deleted absolutely everything, rinsed it, deleted everything except Reaper, Audacity and VLC media player, and packed it up with samples (classic drum machines etc plus my own homebrew samples). It's Windows XP and it actually runs like a dream, all things considered. Probably because I don't use a lot of plugins, though. But it can handle wee reverb plugins and things like that; I mainly plan on using it as a dedicated PC for mixing and EQing so for a free find it's not doing too bad a job.

I seriously should've been collecting that sort of 90s shit from people over the past 20 years From the limited stuff I've heard from the DS-330, there's a glassy blandness to a lot of the (preset) sounds that would, until recently, have seen them disregarded as total shit, but that I can now see finding a niche amongst vaporwave heads, that kind of trapped-in-a-waiting-room/Casio preset sound. I do wonder sometimes what the next wave of fetishised gear will be, now that we've had classic analog stuff, and '80s FM gear, and little samplers like the SP-303 that got snapped up by all the Dilla fans. Sometimes think the bland '90s stuff might be due for a comeback (certainly, rack synths from the period seem to be getting the rep they're due). I sometimes think those packed-out workstations that were aimed less at watmm-style synth fans and more at the home studio production crowd who wanted them for realistic string samples might get some props in the future. I think they've probably got some ferocious sounds hidden away under the sheer number of functions, but it'd take someone making killer tunes with them to get the ball rolling. (By the same token, though, I think what people like about a lot of old gear that's become a cult affair is the simplicity of the workflow, or the fact that they do one thing, but do it well, but I digress)

Aw man, TG33 ticks all of my masochistic late '80s/early '90s plastic buttons Speaking of which I just bought one of these pieces of shit off eBay: Think I'm developing a bit of a thing for really shite gear; wasn't expensive fortunately. Looks like a Boss DR-series drummo but is in fact a 'synth'. Early '90s MIDI sound module, can't find much info about it except that it has the same sound engine as the Roland SC-55 which only really seems to be used by DOS game nerds for playing back MIDI files. Could only find a couple of videos of actual compositions done with one using it as a synth rather than a playback device. Partly bought it because of the mystery, reckon I should be able to make some interesting stuff after a bit of menu-diving though. Kind of know it's going to be gash but for pocket money I reckon it'll be a laugh, might try and make an ambient black metal album using just this, or something. Edit: felt the need to go back and put quotation marks around the word 'synth'

What's the black plastic jobbie on the top right? Guessing some sort of '90s drum machine? Also dual SP-303s, nice

You just need the right idea, I have one: Scientist find out that all viruses originally stem from another outer space but before they came to earth they traveled through a gravitation field in which time passes by much slower (according to theory of relativity). Some of their brothers and sisters didn't do that and had billions of years time to develop a complex and mysterious intelligence and now set out for earth to find their primitive forebears. Does that sound like the best selling bestseller 2017 or not? It sounds like a best seller from 1974 I have plenty of ideas, it's simply getting them to appear as interesting as they sound in my head on paper. Often they do, often not. I still like my first book, and I feel proud at how weird it is. Has its flaws, but satisfied with it. Have you run it by an editor/another writer whose opinions you trust? Maybe you just need some guidance/outside perspective. I haven't, but I don't think this is worth showing. Will leave it on my HD and see how I feel in time. Can always change my mind and resume from where I left off, after doing something else for a while. Keep at it man, I've a hard drive full of fiction stuff I've plugged away on and looking back, most of it's shite, even stuff that I thought was pretty decent at the time. But there is a progression there. It's gotten better slowly but surely. Still not good, still not worth sending off. But better. And I wouldn't trade those hours 'wasted' on writing stories for anything. When I hear a tune off any of a succession of 'writing playlists' I've had over the years it instantly warps me right back to sitting at my tiny desk in my mum and dad's house when I was 16, typing out mad wee epics, instant nostalgia trip. Or wherever I've been writing since. At the end of the day, you do it for the rush, the adaptation, etc. Ideas come and go; sometimes you just have to let them bake, like a turd, and it'll drop out when it's ready. One day you will hear the sound of your bookturd splashing into the receptive bowl of a publisher's willing arms. Keep 'er lit.- 27,855 replies

Man, the 'more choice' thing really fucking winds me up. Heard something similar on the radio here the other day with Theresa May talking about how education reforms would give 'more choice' to parents. When it comes to something like education/healthcare, I don't want fucking choice, I just want to know that there is a non-terrible school in my area or that there is dependable healthcare. Like anyone gives a rat's ass about 'choice' when they've been in an accident. How about the choice not to be in crippling debt for the forseeable future in exchange for medical treatment, eh? Absolute ballocks. Choice of how they fuck you innit- 22,233 replies
