  1. Thanks for the Miles Davis recommendations... Listened to On The Corner a few years ago and the first thing that came to mind was that it sounded like Autechre played on jazz instruments... That seems even more relevant now that we have long pieces from Elseq and NTS...

  2. 5 hours ago, Alcofribas said:

I’m getting into autechre (“ae”) is this a good place to start?

I somehow feel like this early material fits in better with their newer material than Incunabula... I think just cos it has a slightly darker, more aggressive edge to it maybe?

Somehow it feels like it fits the black-and-white graphic design aesthetic they use on newer releases a lot better...

  3. I'm not usually a massive fan of this era of Autechre (at least, not as much as the later stuff) but that was an awesome mix and I danced around the lounge like a kid and it was fun. It makes me wanna give Lego Feet another go.

  4. I don't think I've ever been this excited about a new Autechre album right after its release. For once I feel like I can get on board with all the hype.

Also... I joked before about them saving all the warm pretty melodies for part 4 but they kinda did :P

I can't believe how well it works even though it's 8 hours... it actually uses the 8 hours really well. It doesn't sound like a bunch of left-over jams like Quadrange, it doesn't sound like refined live material like Elseq, it sounds like a proper, carefully planned, carefully constructed album.

I don't know how they're going to top this. What the hell are they going to do next?!?

  5. Ok... so... now I've listened to 1 & 2 a bunch and... I started to like it so much... I got scared to listen to session 3.

In all honesty, I've been dealing with some anxiety issues lately and I genuinely got stressed out about listening to 3. Like I knew I HAD to before 4 came out... or I'd get even more stressed (why? I'm just really good at stressing out and worrying about... well... everything).

Anyway... I managed to listen to it yesterday and like everything anxiety related, actually going ahead and doing the thing is a lot less stressful than the build up leading to it.

I think I'm stressing out about not giving myself the ideal first-time listening experience?

Anyway... I'm DEFINITELY gonna set aside a nice, relaxing time to listen to 4 so I can fully absorb myself into it for the first listen. I haven't wanted to do that for any new release in many years.

One thing that is definitely changing the more I listen to it: at first, it seemed really sparse, but now I realise that it has an ENORMOUS amount of intricate detail, it's just more subtle. It's not all super compressed and in your face like Exai and Elseq (not that those are bad because of it, it's just different).

I also feel like it's mixed a lot more carefully than Elseq. It makes Elseq seem like a practice-run for this, which is the main event. NTS feels so much more mature and carefully mixed and constructed than just about anything else they've done, or at least for a long time. It's really, really fucking good. There's also no SUPER NOISY harshness, it still feels to me like one of the easier listens, because it's so consistent, and just about every track has some kind of hip-hop based beats

I do find it a little bit cold though. There's not really any warm pretty melodies fluttering about here... maybe they saved it all for part 4 :P But... while it certainly has some dark and haunting moments, it's mostly very playful, which again, makes it surprisingly easy to listen to.

Anyway... I haven't felt this excited about an album in a long time... I know I'm probably not contributing to the conversation with anything useful/insightful... just felt like sharing my love for this <3

  6. If you go back through their extended discography (including gescom) you will see that revisiting ideas, sounds, and techniques is common in their work. There is a clear progression even in what seems like radical departures between releases.

So far to my ears this album, if we should even call it that, is like a culmination and exploration of everything they have ever done up to this point. There are elements as recent as onesix mixing it up with stuff reaching as far back as incunabula.

I agree... it is a bit harder to distinguish between the most recent releases and earlier ones (the jump between Chiastic Slide and LP5 was pretty huge for example) but there's definitely some progress here from Elseq. Also I agree that there's a lot of older sounding stuff here. The last track on session 2 sounds a bit like Bronchus 2 to me, and four of seven makes me think of Basscadet and it's remixes. It's definitely the one that's been stuck in my head the most so far.

Well im with bulk on this. I found myself skipping through both sessions and fast-forwarding tracks, biiiig 'so far'

Last time i did that was with eastre and before that with subrange 6-36 but just to see if anything elsez going on. Im not saying this is bad per se (subrange 6-36 is my fav ae track now) just itz different. I see these sessions just like that, like sessions, something that differs from their regular releases. They have albums that are the most emotionally pollished and time-proof, eps that are "more radical ideas", release of live sets /cause ppl asked/, which are the most 'immidiate' and now this sessions which are something in between, maybe between eps and lives.

    Imo

    Imo

    Imo

I sorta agree with this... at least the idea that NTS is it's own "thing". It doesn't seem to be something that I can enjoy in the same way that I enjoy their previous albums.

  7. I've listened to both sessions twice now.

My impression so far is that this is the most easy-going and "accessible" material they've put out since Oversteps (although not nearly as easy-going as that of course).

None of the tracks seem as mind-bendingly complex as Exai, L-Event or (parts of) Elseq. Nor is any of it anywhere near as brutal, abrasive and uncompromising as the live shows (or again, parts of Elseq, I still find acdwn2 un-listenable). They all seem to have a pretty laid-back, easy to follow hip-hop groove, the overall sound is quite sparse. It's good background/working music that you can nod your head to.

Because it's less dense, it almost sounds a little "unfinished" to me, compared to Elseq and especially Exai (going back to that one is a real treat). None of this stuff really "moves" me, which is kind of the result of it being very easy-going. But for this very reason it is also very enjoyable, right from the first listen.

I do think the overall format of this and Elseq is very daring and exciting. I agree with some earlier comments saying that there is a lot less surprise when it comes to Autechre's sound design these days... kinda just the same thing over and over again... however, the way they are exploring how an artist can produce and release music is really fascinating. At this point, I don't expect their next release to sound much different. But I'm still really excited to see what weird ideas they come up with for how it will be released.

In saying that... the remaining 4 hours of this release could very well have some surprises too...

  8.

still yet to receive my pre-order CD from Bleep. figured it'd be sent to arrive on around or a bit after the release date.

yeah strangely enough I haven't even seen this in stores yet. Warp's AU distribution is so patchy

Can't find it here either (I guess New Zealand will normally have the same distribution as Australia?). I've been listening on Spotify.

As for the album, I've been listening to it pretty much constantly for the last week but it feels more like a pop album to me. A really good pop album, but like... it has this catchy, immediacy about it, so it gives me the same kinda feel as say, the new Chvrches album did.... which I had on loop for about 2 weeks and then got bored of, but I'm sure I'll dig it up every now and again.

That's what I think GoD is. Replica and r+7 were completely impenetrable to me for about a year. That kind of slow opening-up is more comparable to the more difficult albums by Squarepusher and Autechre (or even like... a good jazz album... been getting into jazz this year and sometimes it takes a couple of months for an album to make sense).

Anyway... I obviously really enjoy GoD... so I'm not saying it's bad by any means... I just don't think it's particularly deep... and I don't think music has to be deep in terms of theme (there are plenty of incredible, simple songs about love for instance), but in terms of like... structure and performance and stuff I think the best music IS really deep.... I think I should stop now I'm just babbling....

  9. It took a very long time for me to "click" with OPN. Replica sounded to me like unfinished scraps from The Field, and r+7 sounded like the music Ross makes on Friends.

It was his older music that got me into it. I'm not sure why but I heard Returnal and immediately fell in love with that album. The first track is a blast of noise, and then there's two tracks of some of the most beautiful ambient drone I've ever heard. The rest is pretty good too of course but those first 3 tracks... WOW.

Anyway... I went back and listened to more old stuff (this is why Spotify is useful) and I also really liked Zones Without People (ESPECIALLY the title track). I just thought "why isn't he making more of this instead of all that stupid new shit".

Then I tried Replica again and it clicked. I suddenly noticed he was actually layering a lot of the same kind of synths and melodies from stuff like Zones Without People with the looped snippets of TV ads. There's a lot of subtlety to that album... but not so much that it's completely hidden. Anyway... if you're struggling to see the appeal I would try listening to his older material first and then try going back to the newer stuff later. Now I can't get enough of it... really looking forward to Garden of Delete! I'm loving the preview tracks and I'm struggling not to over play them before the rest of the album is out...

  10. My apologies if this has already been asked, I haven't had time to read through ALL of this mammoth thread yet...

Many find your music "difficult" or "challenging" to listen to, and say that it takes numerous listens and sometimes years to really fall in love with it.

Is there any music that you feel this way about? Anything that you absolutely love now but at first you found difficult to listen to?

(and thank you so much for taking the time to do this!)

  11.

not really impressed with the new track... his vocals really do ruin it don't they? the lyrics have gone full retard. I wanted to look forward to this one but if it all sounds like that I'll just skip and go listen to TDS and The Fragile

    this

    ...yeah....

It's not terrible... there's worse on With Teeth (The Collector) but the ultra clean production (which I really like actually) just doesn't fit the vocal style or lyrics at all... it just shows off how ridiculous he sounds even more than ever...

  12. I had a thought...

If WARP/Autechre decided a different strategy, where they finished the album, but they PRETENDED that it wasn't finished, and then spent the 3-4 months lead in posting updates on progress to the album, and said that they were going to release it the day it's complete and mastered and printed...

would everyone be happier with that?

    :cisfor:

  13.

    "

So why is it when asked what my favourite artists are, when I mention Autechre, 99% of people say "Who?" If it was the greatest music ever, after 22 years wouldn't the whole world know who they are?

Because 99% of people are morons. That's why. There's your answer. That is why we are all here waiting for this to leak. 99% of people are quite frankly shit, sorry but it's true... Autechre is one of that very delicate 1%.

    Right on, compson! :) :) :)

    Music vs intelligence

    SAT to IQ conversion chart

LOL I'm only fan of Beethoven and Ae. Shit! This study works just fine for me :)

I'm wondering what would be our (hard.core Ae fans) average IQ... Can't imagine higher average IQ to be in any other music fans. Not even Beethoven's. OK, maybe Actress fan group...

We could make an anonymous survey but only for those who knows their IQ or SAT. ..or after using this excellent IQ test.

That could be fun waiting time before Exai leaks. In the mean time we can talk to each other how special and intelligent we are adding compliments for our beautiful massive dicks...why not?! I have one and IQ of 160 as everybody else here. Sorry compson, I'm not sure anymore if i'm being sarcastic or not. I managed to trick myself. ...every erection is 1l less blood in my system. here we go... I did it again!

...and not to be completely off-topic let me juts add...I'm exaited! :cerious:

I think this thread alone proves that you certainly don't have to be intelligent to like Autechre...

  14.

pixelives, I have an intelligent question, which you've probably already answered once, but:

Does Exai have any tracks with pretty melodies?

ummm, that's not really an intelligent question.

    Yes it is

    Thanks for the answer pixel.

I wanted to ask that question but was worried I'd look stupid.

Based on what pixelives has said, it sounds like a very dark album overall...

  15. If I had the time (which I don't at the moment) I'd write up a review. Maybe later this coming week, though. At this point I'm moving past initial impressions and will need a few more listens to go deeper with it. Right now I can answer specific questions. I can also just leave it alone if it's bothering people. I understand that it might be ruining the discovery process for when you do hear it.

I personally really appreciate your little reviews. I would rather read something like this than listen to a leak. I know for a fact that there is no way it will sound anything like your descriptions do in my head, that always happens with reviews :P (I have a very odd imagination) but knowing specific things like "no beatless tracks" or "songs broken into distinct sections", it's good to know that stuff so I have SOME idea of what I'm in for.
