  1. It's a shame there's so few decent high-concept science fiction films, it's not like there's a shortage of decent stories, hollywood screenwriters are mostly completely useless these days when it comes to original ideas so I've no idea why we've not managed to see an adaptation of some Iain M Banks or something. Alien/s and Blade Runner were great movies, but a lot of our fondness for them has a nostalgic element to it I think, they're really nothing special plot-wise, and are filled with clichés and the silly character behaviours Prometheus gets accused of (hell, in the case of Aliens that's why it's so great). Maybe it's just a hard problem to fix in 90-120 minutes without relying on clunky exposition and other narrative flaws. 2001 got away with it by saying pretty much nothing explicitly, but only a genius like Kubrick is able to pull that off. Maybe this kind of thing would be better suited to tv treatment? Battlestar Gallactica was a decent stab at it, Caprica started off poorly but was actually starting to get interesting when they cancelled it.
  2. yeah, great film. it's pretty intense, definitely an experience.
  3. I thought they were both great executions of solid science fiction ideas, there are very few genuine science fiction films imho, mostly blends of weakened SF ideas with action/horror/etc, Solaris (the original) and 2001 are the high-point (though 2001 is possibly even surpassed by 2010 in terms of SF credentials), films like Blade Runner and Alien/s are great films but represent the blend of ideas thing I'm talking about. I loved this and and Prometheus for making the decision to focus on the ideas compared to the vast majority of science fiction films that are being made these days. They both have their flaws, Interstellar had a couple of silly plot elements (you're always allowed one silly idea in any good science fiction story though), and Prometheus some dodgy characterisation and directing choices, but I'm willing to cut them some slack. They're both very different films in terms of their execution, Interstellar is far better directed and acted, but there's a certain spirit of "proper SF" about them that they both share.
  4. Interstellar - not without it's flaws, a few cheesy moments dialog-wise, the whole interspersed plotlines thing didn't always work well, the main time paradox thing shouldn't have been in there (it should never be in there, all movies fuck this up, time travel is nonsense people!). but aside from all that it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, the giant black hole tidal shit was great, the music was fantastic, the visuals in general were great, it was a great homage to 2001 (and 2010). it's great to see Hollywood still willing to attempt high concept SF, this and Prometheus are the only decent efforts in recent years, both flawed, but at least they're trying...
  5. yeah, that was an outstanding bit of telly, up there with any of the best episodes from Breaking Bad.
  6. it was meant to be taken literally, and not only are they both guilty of rhetorical failures, but outright deception.
  7. he's a good film maker, but his arguments never hold any water (though I haven't seen that one). he's basically a highbrow michael moore.

  9. you're imagining things. the theme song is great though. love the way it cuts out abruptly as well. I only noticed one instance of it, when that guy in the flashback leaves the bar he says 'hells yeah', which seems like a very modernly annoying shit-phrase.
  10. hahahahaha that's hilarious! that actually made it into the movie?!?
  11. it's onomatopoeic. the type of synth noise. walking in mud would be squidgy or squelchy for example.
  12. The download links on those earlier SAW tracks are now enabled.
  13. Not yet, and he might not even appear. But they're entering into that phase of it now.
