i used to end up buying a new pair of headphones every year cus id get cheap ones that would break. few years  ago i got myself some philips fidelio x2's. theyre built well so hopefully theyll last

Reminds me of this great quote from Terry Pratchett's Discworld:

    Quote

"The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness."

  2. 'Nicer' is probably a subjective term for it - It'll add 2nd and/or 3rd harmonics which can sound 'richer' (as you're literally adding slight overtones to the original sound), whether that's better or not would be entirely up to your ears. I'd personally do without it so I have a 'truer' sound to the original source, especially for mixing purposes, and only consider an amp if I literally can't provide enough power to the 'phones without turning them right up to max in the audio interface. I believe your 990s have quite a meaty impedance so may well benefit from an amp (how far are you having to crank up the headphone dial on your focusrite ?)

when I first heard the Japan live CD i was convinced it was a dark warehouse not a family filled daytime Fuji fest. However, TJ rages hard, the crowd reacts perfectly and its just no holds bar assault on everything

Oddly enough I pictured exactly the same thing in my mind's eye/ear..... Wasn't until I saw the video a few years later I thought 'hang on - I recognise these shout-outs to the rather muted crowd'

Nice. I wonder if they will ever fix that CPU meter that is always pegged to all-of-it%.

v11 has slightly different metering from v10 (and previous versions) - Rather than 'average CPU' it's now 'current CPU' so should a bit more precise. Still won't help if it's hitting the >100% like I've had many times !

Oh I use it on the computer lol. Not on my phone though.

Also, that only blocks in browser, not in the app, which is where I use Facebook on the phone.

If you have an Android phone (might be an equivalent on the iPhone - though probably not without a good ol jailbreak!) I highly recommend grabbing F-Droid ( https://www.f-droid.org/ ) and then downloading DNS66, then switching on StevenBlack's hosts file filter. Blocks add nasties at a system level, even without root!

^ pretty neat. kind of like Zachtronics games (Exapunks, Molek Syntez) which have puzzles so complex that you learn something from doing them.

Just played the first 6 levels and is very Zachtronics-esque indeed. So far I've found it easier to grasp than TIS-100 though (the only other Zachtronics game I've played). Actually finding the wording of the tasks to be the hardest part of if (some of the grammar makes the challenges a little ambiguous)

  7. Quite possibly just my knack of knowledge of using msys/mingw64 as a compilation environment. Go through the build process and it stops right near the end due to a missing library 'libwinpthread.a' even though it's definitely there ! (/mingw64/x86_64-w64-mingw32/lib/libwinpthread.a)

EDIT: Actually think it's just a case of tweaking the makefile, not sure why I didn't think of it before. At the moment it looks like it's pointing to /usr/x86_64-w64-mingw32/sys-root/mingw/lib but it should be /mingw64/x86_64-w64-mingw32/lib

EDIT2: Yaaaasss that was it ! .dll successfully built 🙂

  8. Yaaass - Been following the Github progress for about 3 years now (and every 6 months or so blindly trying to compile the source and failing every time near the end of the process). Thanks for the heads up 🙂
