  1. Been shopping politicians lately. They're such awesome source material, because HD pics are readily available, but unlike actors/singers, they're not cute.

This one is entitled "Clay Higgins & Goons". The moon man on the left is packing a Glock. He may be a goon, but he's chill af. The ogre on the right obviously wields a club. You're in good hands, Clay.

  2. Nice, this old post is still pinned. I've got some catching up to do.

Been into Bowie and T-Rex for a minute, and have no idea how I missed Sparks (especially as an American, didn't know we had it in us back then).

Kimono My House has been on repeat. Male vocalist, effortless falsetto, cabaret delivery, dramatic af. Sure as fuck doesn't follow verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus. Structure is all over. Favorites include "Falling In Love With Myself Again", "Talent is an Asset", and "Barbecutie".

Anyways, hoping to get back into WATMM. I fucking hate Reddit.

  3. Squarepusher - Numbers Lucent 8/10

Excellent, as usual. Love the dirty ending track, really cool.

    Love that song.

Lord Sutch And Heavy Friends - 10/10

Someone posted "Flashing Lights" in some thread devoted to rocking songs and I am so happy that they did. When I'm shit-faced this is the album I will flail around to all-night (along with Neil Young's Re-ac-tor). Jimmy Page provides some fantastic guitar work as well.

Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges - Clube da Esquina - 10/10

Fantastic Brazillian Rock/Pop(?). Milton's voice is beautiful and Lo's guitar work is hypnotic. Single songs will go from slow and melancholy, to percussive breaks, to pure rock progressions. "Dos Cruces" is probably the best track to start with, though I fell in love with "San Vicente" (My girlfriend thinks that one's just plain goofy though).

    Os Mutantes - Mutantes - 9/10

Their second album and my personal favorite. Brazillian psychedelic pop that the Beatles made so popular in the late-60's. They remind me a lot of "The United States of America" but 10x better. The tracks are all over the place, but the album is still cohesive in my opinion.

    Gonjasufi - MU.ZZ.LE. - 10/10

It took me forever to warm up to this album, but now it's easily my favorite thing Ecks has ever released. "Nikels And Dimes/Rubberband" was all I listened to for a week-straight a few months ago. The beat-work and trip-hop basslines are gorgeous. Bassline in Rubberband might be samples from Portishead's "How can it be" or whatever the fuck that songs called but whatever. Less sample abuse than Gaslamp Killer's production in Sufi and a Killer.

    Spectral Park - Spectral Park - 10/10

I can't remember if I already gushed about this album the last time I posted but it is so fucking cool. Poppy, overwhelming, distorted, perfect. I've never heard anything like it.

    Beck - Modern Guilt - 10/10

I was one of those assholes who only liked Guero, but Gamma Ray is even better.

    P-Model - In a Model Room - 8/10

Some damn fine Japanese New Wave.

Julia Holter - Loud City Song - 5/10

She's talented, but I get pretty bored with the album quickly. BUT, "Horns Surrounding Me" is amazing; a weird cross between Beach House, Portishead, and a small orchestra. Glad I held onto it for these shitty winter months.

    MC5 - Kick Out the Jams - 9/10

Some White Panther hardcore proto-punk rock that exploded out of Detroit in 1968. Sampled by Alec Empire in "Alec Empire vs. Merzbow".

    Oval - Pre-Systemische - 9/10

My favorite Oval tracks have always been "Commerce Server" and "Shop in Store". I recently found out that they were from recording sessions before 94diskont and Systemische. Grab it if you like his early stuff.

    Todd Rundgren

I have the same opinion of Todd as I do of Richard D. James. They are kings of energy-filled hardcore, but their releases in the style are few and far between. With Richard we have "54 Cymru Beats", "Cock Ver 10", "Flow Coma Remix", "Box Energy Remix", some random song I found called "Crappy", "Omgyjya Switch7", "AFX 237v7", and I guess "Carnmarth" and some other tracks from the Richard D. James album.

Todd has "You need your Head", "Rock-n-roll Pussy", "Everybody's Going to Heaven/King-Kong Reggae), and "Heavy Metal Kids" (that fucking guitar solo).

If ya'll know anything by either artist that is as energetic and hardcore as the tracks I listed PLEASE tell me. And don't go sending me links to Steinvord, that stuff is dull.

    No Joy - Negaverse - 9/10

    Good upbeat shoegazey stuff.

And last but not least: Akiko Yano's song "Rose Garden". The rest of the album was really shitty 80's J-Pop, but this song is something special. 10/10

And if Kung-Fu Blaxploitation movies with a Soulful 70's soundtrack is your thing, get your hands on "Black Belt Jones". If you like the Black Dynamite movie you will like this. I've watched a good 20 or so Blaxploitation films in the past couple of months, and this is the cream of the crop.

Now I gotta check out all of the shit Beerwolf and VerticalHold posted.

  4. I'll read up on this thread soon. I haven't been keeping up with Electronic Music much at all. Here's some memorable albums of the past year for me:

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This is Nowhere; Broken Arrow; Rust Never Sleeps

With the addition of Trans, these 3 albums are as good as Neil gets (imo). The vocal inflections in EKTIN are heart-wrenching, especially in "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)". I've been belting out the lyrics to "Losing End" just about every day lately.

Motherfucking Broken Arrow, man. The single note bass part for the last 7 minutes of "Loose Change" puts me in a trance every time. Couple that with Neil's in-and-out vocals and killer guitar solos and it ends up being one of the best songs I can think of.

Although, 'Sedan Delivery' from Rust Never Sleeps definitely takes the cake. Fast-paced tempo and Funny-as-hell lyrics cause me to put the track on repeat every time I put the album on in my car. Seriously, if you haven't delved very far into Neil Young's discography give these three albums a shot. They're all perfect.

    Quilt - Held in Splendor

Shit, there were days where I'd listen to "Arctic Shark" 10 times in a row. The winter here in Minnesota made the entire state depressed. I've never seen anything like it. I got this album just as Spring was starting to show it's gorgeous mug and it really clicked with me. A lot of people may just pass it up as uninspired indie-rock, and I guess I don't know how I'd fight someone with that opinion. I just like it.

Alec Empire - The Golden Foretaste Of Heaven

I don't know how many times I've fucked to this album now, but it's exactly what we always want to hear. Hardcore yet sweet at the same time. So many driving beats. "On Fire (The Hellish Vortex Sessions)" makes me wanna punch a wall and fuck like there's no tomorrow. Good shit. With the exception of "Robot L.O.V.E." I always skip that one.

    Merzbow - Aqua Necromancer

Fantastic album. The intro to "Contrapunti Indian" becomes so overwhelming; the noise turns into this breathing huge thing and then dives into cutup psychedlic rock. I put it up there with Merzzow and Merzbeat. Had to edit out the high-pitch noise in "Soft Drums". It seems whenever a Merzbow song has the word "Soft" in the title you're in for some high pitches.

    Plastics - Origato Plastico

I was very happy to find more 80's Japanese New Wave this year. I don't really know how to describe it, but I love it.

Chaos Royale - You Realize, This Means War

He released Discopathology on V/vm Test under Noise/Girl back in 2001. 10 years later he released this album. I suppose I'd equate it to Noise mixed with Dubstep with a high tempo. It's loud, it's hardcore, it's good.

Tim Hecker - Trade Winds, White Noise

I'm not very big into Hecker. I've tried giving him a chance, but the only thing I've liked for the past several years is Radio Amor; and I like it a lot. I discovered this companion piece of sorts, and I'd say it's just as good as that album. Both really impressionistic images of the sea and stuff. If you like Radio Amor, get this one too.

Alien Porno Midgets - High Altitude Over Our Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua

It's just Hawaiian music given the V/vm and Jansky Noise treatment. It's right up there with Sick Love.

    Venetian Snares - Infolepsy EP

I'd only really listened to the track "Twelve" until this year. "Where's Bill" is one of the greatest hardcore epics I know of along with Aphex Twin's "54 Cymru Beats".

All of Leyland Kirby's new stuff is good too, so go buy that.

  5. the nigeria 70 compilations are killer and worth hunting down

Agreed. The Ghana Special off Soundwave Records is killer as well.

I've been on a huge Afrobeat/Highlife kick lately, mostly 60's/70's music from Ghana and Nigeria. Here are my favorites.

    African Brothers Band (Ghana)

Mahotella Queens (South Africa): This song is really funky, but their album "Meet the Mahotella Queens" contains a lot more laid back summer day tracks.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbXMyxdzyhU

    Bola Johnson (Nigeria)

Shit, I didn't even know this track was on Lagos Jump. Guess I need to buy another album.

  6. Man, sounds like a nice night, Cryptoween; really nice notes too. I haven't been in that state of mind in what feels like a year now. I wish I had some swamp monster.

Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest - After waiting for this album for years, here I am, bitching about it. There are definitely some nice songs in this album, and I hope the more I get to know them the more I'll like them, but right now, I'm not feeling it. The arpeggio themes that they do on a few of the tracks reminds of Daft Punk's Tron Legacy soundtrack, which is really saddening. Everything is so epic and crisp, which have never been two words I've described BOC as (with the exception of that high hat on Skyliner). I listened to MHTRC and Geogaddi before and afterwards respectively, and this new album doesn't compare. It seems so cold and emotionless in comparison. Oh well, I'll still keep trying to love it.

Rodion G.A. - The Lost Tapes - Romanian synthy psychedelia made under a repressive government. These tracks had been hidden on reel-to-reel tape for the past 34 years and were unearthed recently. I had two artists that I could compare this music to, but all I remember is Omar Souleyman. I dunno, just youtube it, or buy it from STRUT records. It's cool stuff, and a strong piece of electronic music history.

MOONRIDERS - Camera Egal Stylo - A while ago I was at a cafe in Minneapolis and they had some old-school Japanese hip-hop playing. It sounded like it was from the 80's, and when I asked the guy at the counter who it was, I must've missheard because I can't find them anywhere. All I know is posse was in the name. So, this led me to going through every cassette released in Japan in the 80's (according to Discogs) and listening to them. I didn't find them, but MOONRIDERS is pretty cool. It sort of blends Japanese New Wave with "Art Rock". It reminds me of Man Man at times.

Ghana Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds, Ghanaian Blues 1968-81 - Great stuff. I'm happy to see that the African Brothers are on the compilation a couple of times.

Oval - szenario - A fantastic EP. It gives me feelings similar to that of 94diskont. Just be sure to skip track 3 (Ref). Download it for free here: http://oval.bandcamp.com/

Big Brother and the Holding Company: Cheap Thrills - Combination of the Two is a fucking awesome track, and then it sorta goes downhill for me. Maybe I'm just a big asshole, but when Janis Joplin does her raspy blues voice, it just sounds like the lead singer of ACDC or some 80's hair metal singer. I do like the music though.

  7. Mahotella Queens - Meet the Mahotella Queens: 60's music out of South Africa. Their harmonies are lovely, and their contrast with whats-his-face's weird-ass baritone throaty voice really work. A great feel good record, 9/10

MadToons Beat Orchestra - Self Titled: I thought Reaching Quiet, Miss Ohio's Nameless, and The Split EP were Why? and Odd Nosdams only collaborations, but there's this single as well. Track 1 is perfect. Why? uses an array of goofy voices throughout the track which is put to Nosdam's more old school production style. Track 2 is alright. 9/10

Strut Records Sampler: There's some good and some bad. Either way it's free, so go download it.

  8. The bird in my avatar is a character in a game I'm currently developing.

Nice, he looks like a p cool dude. I will await in anticipation.

I've been reworking a Turtle Simulator for VB.NET that I made in qbasic 7 years ago. Here are some screenshots. The darker shots are him in the Pet Store (Prison).

  9. Murve, have you tried eating yogurt/ probiotic stuff like kombucha? This settled my stomach after a nasty bit of food poisoning. Don't know if it's applicable. You could also try eating a simple diet of bananas, rice, applesauce, and tea (good easily digestible stuff).

Ah christ, how did I forget about yogurt? Sadly, bananas are that one fruit (along with Cantalope) that I just can't force myself to eat. I'll give all of the suggestions a go (except yek's), thanks watmm!

And you and your avatar will be missed, KY.

  10. anyway, i'm trying to delete my watmm account now but squee and joyrex haven't responded yet. later dudes

    For serious?

I've had some pretty harsh stomach pain and have felt overall bloated for 5 days now. It wakes me up in the middle of the night a lot, and it's making my job pretty difficult. I went to the doctor and they told me to buy some $6.00 antibiotics (well-worth my hundred-something-dollar appointment ).

Gasex does nothing, Tums does nothing, I don't feel fatigued, I'm shitting regularly, I haven't puked; I dunno what to do.

  11. I've been working for a flower merchandising company for the past week. The pay is nice and I'm supposed to be getting 18 hours/week (Student loans are taking care of the rest). But, it's been snowing/freezing raining here for a while, and no one is going to buy/plant flowers when it's snowing/freezing raining out.

So, I've worked 3 hours total. I'm so broke.

  12. Nice! I'll have to pick one up then.

Ludwig Persik - Ludwig Persik 2012 EP: I took my brother to a Jamie Lidell concert last Saturday for his birthday, and Ludwig was the first opening act. I was very impressed. My brother and I both ended up buying his EP and we got it signed.

The production was done by Jamie Lidell, but the psychedelic guitars are all Ludwig. His voice kind of reminds of Bradford Cox, but his sound is a bit more crisp and funky than Deerhunter's. Good stuff. I've listened to the EP four times since then. 9/10

  13. Soundway presents Ghana Special (1968-81)

Fantastic complication, cheap as chips too. I recommend checking out the other comps on this label (Soundway).

Damn, that album looks great. I'm gonna go broke from checking this thread too often.

Edit: Aw damn. Didn't realize it was an mp3 only release.

  14. nigeria 70: sweet times afro-funk, highlife & juju from 1970s lagos: unlike the previous 'nigeria 70' compilations that had a more western approach to afrobeat, this is more traditional, heavy and ethnic sounding. if fela kuti is what was popular in the downtown lagos discos, then most of these guys are who you would have heard if you went to the more dimly lit dives or rural clubs.

the linear notes give a really interesting account of just who these guys are (the don isaac ezekiel combination is comprised of college students who cooked up a few tunes that ended up on a rare 45 whilst the victor olaiya & his allstars were a popular juju band of the time) and gives you a good idea of the spectrum being covered.

Nice, definitely going to have to get this. I love me some highlife, and I doubt I've previously listened to any of the more unknown artists.

  15. 'm curious to know whether anyone thinks North Korea's attitudes towards the US and South Korea would improve if the sanctions being imposed on them are lifted? Does anyone think this is the best route to go down and see what happens?

I've been curious about this as well, and Smet's reply certainly wasn't the reply I was hoping for. I feel there is a lot more to these threats from North Korea than "The new guy just wants to look like a strong leader".

    Edit:

Well this quote seems to answers my question (still curious if lifting sanctions would improve relations though):

...The aim should be to reach an arms control agreement which implicitly accepts North Korea's claim to being a nuclear power, while also limiting the size of North Korea's nuclear arsenal, and setting out a clear and specific means of controlling this arsenal. In other words, the pipe dream of denuclearization should be discarded; arms control is the only attainable goal.

Such a dialogue should be entered into with no illusions: North Korea has a proven track record of cheating, and they will try hard to cheat again this time. Pyongyang will sign such an arms control agreement only if the outside world is prepared to pay them for the privilege in the form of aid and other assistance, as it's done in past negotiations. It is not a good compromise, but it's the best option remaining -- the result of decades of canny foreign policy maneuvering by North Korea's leaders.
