  2. Aight, so, the other night I said to my wife: "Hey hon, I'm going to the store later, do you want anything?" It seemed like such an innocuous request. Little did I know it would turn into my own personal Kobashi Maru.

"Oh, yeah, could you pick me up some cookies?" Ok, so far, so good. "But, um, don't get me any of the cookies you usually do." Ah... ok, so- "Oh, and don't get me any of the types of cookies I usually like." I could feed my brain beginning to lock down, the equivalent of asking a robot in 1980's sci fi to resolve a paradox. I thought about asking for additional guidance but I knew what that would result in: a ball withering stare of scorn and a loudly thought "No dude, FIGURE THAT SHIT OUT." My testicles shrank at the mere notion of a thought of the look.

15 minutes later, I'm at the Food Lion, basket half full of the necessary items, steadily rocking back and forth on the balls of my feet in the cookie aisle. You may or may not know this, but the selection of cookies at Food Lion... well, it's not fucking Harrod's of London ok? Peperidge Farm collection? No, that's firmly in the "usual" category. Crispy, thin chocolate chip? No you fool! She said nothing like she usually likes!!! I was at an impasse. Do I shoot the moon and just get all the cookies available? 100% cover all options. Is that madness? Why does my breathe smell so bad in this mask? Did it always smell so bad? WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME IT SMELLED SO BAD? stay on target, .... stay on target.. this is about the cookies you idiot, FOCUS ON THE COOKIES

Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a blue glimmer, a shimmering azure ray of god-given hope radiating from the top shelf. It was there. It was them. As if they had always been there waiting for me. And I remembered. I remembered that one thread where Joyrex said his wife fucking loved these cookies or maybe I just made that up in my head but fuck it let's go with it. The Royal Dansk aka the Royalest Danks

    image.jpeg.4f286aee2e473bd3cf67044ca6e1bc24.jpeg

I grabbed that gleaming blue tin like a dog catching a frisbee but I used my hands not my mouth and I didn't jump and hey actually it was really nothing like that but it seemed like a good simile at the time. I ran (I walked calmly but briskly) to the counter where I flung my groceries onto the belt  (I went to the self checkout line and patiently waited for a couple of college kids to finish buying a case of Budweiser) proclaiming THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!! (I didn't say a damn thing, and definitely didn't make eye contact with anyone and of course made sure to use my MVP card to get a .30cent discount on the Simply Fruit Punch. I have a toddler wtf do you want from me)

Driving home I was still trepidatious. What if Joyrex had steered me wrong? What if that blue gleam was some Black Lodge entity trying to reverse-Dougie me into a anti-Mr. Jackpots scenario where everything I touched turned to shit, like a reverse Midas - though, come to think of it, I think the moral of that story was that having everything you touch turns to gold sucks? - and my wife absolutely hated it.

I arrived at the house, slowly turning the stereo down so that the bass from 1st 44 didn't shatter my neighbors windows. I took a deep breathe. I walked in the house, popped the groceries down on the counter. I unsheathed the Royal Butter Cooks from their wrapping, knowing I had minutes to spare before the inevitable "hey hon, um... did you get cookies" text would appear. I grabbed a careful assortment, placed them on a plate, then whisked away to the bedroom, where my wife waited. I carefully opened the door so as not to wake the baby, and slid the plate to her, walking away quickly ... what rage mighdst break forth had I not provided the appropriate sustaining morsels?!!!

The night wore on, my cell phone remained silent. I began to breathe easier. When I slipped into bed later, the plate was next to the bed - not a cookie to be seen! My balls, having once retreated into my inguinal canal slowly began to descend, a slithering release of pressure, a sigh, and a slight smile pressed across my face. I slept, the sleep of the just, the sleep of the triumphant.

The test was passed. We live to fight another day. Joyrex saves another marriage. HIS NAME BE PRAISED!

So the mystery man is supposed to be a personification of his wife? Never noticed that he had his wife's hair in that scene...

    Spoiler

So, trying hard to not go down a Lynch rabbit-hole, but I think the mystery man represents the darkness that the main character has let into his life. When the mystery man is talking at the party (during the "give me back my phone" scene) he says something about how he's "already in your house" and that the bill pullman character "invited him in." Then he says something like "it's not my habit to go where I am not wanted." In the context of Lynch's schtuff, the mystery man looks like something that would inhabit the Black Lodge (pale face, black lips). Usually a sort of demon figure/someone who feeds on suffering (garmonbozia). If you consider the whole movie as a window into someone's endless hell loop, where what was once reality is starting to bleed into/mingle with the portion that is pure fantasy (most people read the second half as the fantasy that the main character builds for himself to hide from the fact that he murdered his wife), I think the appearance of the mystery man sort of represents how far inside his own life/mind the main character has let this darkness penetrate - it may also symbolize his subconscious recognition of his own violent acts that have/will occur soon.

    I tried. I failed ^O^

  4. So, this is pretty cool. Got chosen as a runner-up in this remix contest - lots of interesting takes on this track (including a lot of talented folks) so pretty happy to be in the final compilation. A good experience too - particularly 'cause this is not my usual genre of music so was fun trying to figure out how to put a personal stamp on it. Links to the track on my Soundclown and the artists post with the compilation (worth clicking through to hear the other remixes - my m8 (Broken Cradle) got 2nd and his version is FANTASTIC)

hahaha, yeah that's the one. Didn't mention that specific part b/c I forgot u can use  spoiler tags lol ... my brain broke when that shit happened. pure nightmare fuel...

Oh, also, the most terrifying horror movie I won't be watching this season is the presidential debates amirite?

  6. 19 hours ago, Squee said:

When I was a kid (way way way way before Lost Highway) I had a nightmare similar to that.
Now imagine what it was like watching Lost Highway for me.

    ? I can't even...

I do think the reason Lynch's horror stuff scares me so is that it does seem so similar to my nightmares when I have them... it's like he just dropped in and started filming... *shivers*

  7. Lotsa really great movies on this thread. Horror is so weird - like, I feel like some of these movies, if you aren't in the right mood, you won't find them compelling at all (ex. I know Hereditary is supposed to be god-tier new horror, but I literally fell asleep in the theater watching it). Also, some movies I found scary AF the first time I watched them, but now I find them laughable (Session 9 comes to mind).

ANyWAY, won't get around to all these, but here's the one's I'd probably watch again if I had the time:

Grave Encounters I & II - PM my fave found footage horror flicks. The first one is a great send-up of the typical Ghost Hunters type show, playing on the "what if it was real" with some HOL elements thrown in. Second one is maligned by many, but I love the evolution of the concepts, as well as the meta nature of the whole thing. My wife and I watch these about once a year

Prometheus - just watched this recently actually. As a high-brow sci-fi human commentary flick it's not very good. But as a B-horror movie it's actually pretty stellar. If you approach it from this perspective, then a lot of the things that bother you sort of fade away (why does the captain leave the bridge to go bang the hot chick while his crew is trapped on the surface? makes 0 sense in a real-world scenario but it perfectly follows horror movie logic. Apply this to every part of this movie that doesn't seem to make sense.).

Lost Highway - Someone else here mentioned this. Probably the most terrifying thing I've ever seen - part of that was seeing this in a theatre where you can't really escape from the images/sound design. The scene where the Bill Pullman character talks about his dream "it was you... but it wasn't you" and his wife's face shrouded in darkness, etc. .. fffff. If anyone has seen it, I had the same reaction to a particular scene in La Jette (if you've seen you, you know what I mean). Watch this one with headphones on don't leave you seat, and don't adjust the volume for maximum effect.

Nightmare on Elm Street (Craven Directed films) - Including New Nightmare in here - it's lost some of it's scare potential over the years, but the ideas here are spectacular. Of course only works if you watched the earlier films but Craven went meta in a pop-horror film was before anyone else I can think of.

I could prob think of a bajillion more but these would likely take priority. Might throw a Tucker and Dale vs Evil in there for the lol's. Also, Evil Deads 'cause come on, baby. Also (also) the Evil Dead remake - more intense than I ever expected.

Glad to hear someone else liked it.
I'm not sure repeated viewings will necessarily reveal anything groundbreaking to the viewer. It's one of those movies that I think "intuitive logic" or "abstract logic" is the key to understanding it without being able to put your understanding into words. I'm not even sure I like talking about it because the feeling you're left with (if the movie sucked you in and I can totally understand why some people are put off by it) is extremely subjective. My girlfriend and I talked about it for a couple of hours after watching it and whenever I tried putting my thoughts into words it all just fell apart. So whenever I tried explaining what I thought happened I felt like an idiot. I guess you need to be a poet or something to be able to put these feelings into words.

First off, it's pretty awesome you have a girl that is not only willing to watch a movie like this with you, but also who wants to talk about it for hours afterwards. That's awesome!  (my wife would rather eat rusty nails than watch a film like that).  I feel like your response to the movie is kinda perfect? I mean, in some ways as literary and wordy as the movie can be, at the heart it seems to be about, in some ways, words being insufficient and words being lost. More a feeling, like you say.

Glad to see you and QP liked it - feel like it's not for everyone but for a certain person it probably it quite moving (it was for me ... and still am thinking about it days later).

  9. Obligatory posting on the 666 page. Seems appropriate that a Paris Hilton is on this one yah?

Watched I'm Thinking About Ending Things. I think this one is doing itself a disservice by being marketed as a horror film. I guess, in the truest sense of the word it's "horror" as it's (trying to speak vaguely here on purpose) about very real horrors of the mind more than, say, a jump scare film (or even a slow burn A24 or whatever It follows sort of thing). Hyper literary, meta, but what do you expect from a Kaufman film? Impeccably acted on all parts, very much a work of "art" as opposed to pure entertainment (though it is that). Lynchian, heartbreaking at points, beautiful at others. It's haunted me since watching it in the best possible way.

I will note: yes, there is something to "figure out" here that probably rewards on repeat viewings, but even figuring that out didn't actually detract from the overall experience (as it often does).

Didn't know people still cared about car audio

Did a lot of hearing damage growing up with systems, it was "the thing" to do.

Ha! That vid is great. The sub I got wouldn't do nearly this sort of thing but it still hits harder than anything I've had in a car before. I left Cypress Hill Temples of Boom in the CD player accidentally and apparently the installer used that as his primary reference point ^O^

Seriously though, I think many of my favorite music listening experiences happened in a car. Lots of fond memories listening to (what are now) classic warp records (Go Plastic, Drukqs, etc.) while driving around town doing nothing but... driving around town and listening to music. ... wish I had more time for it these days... oh, right, the speakers they installed in the front are Hybrid Audio Mirus  They've done a really good job of bringing in some clarity w/out breaking the bank. In case anyone is looking to upgrade. ..

Right?!! I swear, we still have a lot of moments of small snipey banter here and there, but with stuff like this... she totally gets why it means so much to me (even if it doesn't to her). Pretty lucky for sure.

  11. So, I uh, might have somewhat spur of the moment (but not really, been wanting this for a while) put a system in my car. Was initially going to just upgrade speakers but my wife talked me into going more full throttle. I don't think she exactly expected a sub that would take up 1/4 of the trunk, but here we are.

Anyway, holy fucking shit this EP fucking kills w/ a proper system, particularly the sub-frequencies. 1st 44 in particular feels like you are steadily punching your way through 14 different reality membranes on your way to nirvana. Also, unrelated, but the Heorge Garrison stuff (at least Bounce Selector - haven't tried the rest yet) ... wow, so friggin good. Redonkulous production on that shit.

  12. Yeah... I don't know if you can watch S3 without the earlier seasons though? I mean, whether or not you agree with that Twin Perfect fella, I did think there is some commentary on expectations carried through to S3 from watchers of the earlier seasons. Also, I mean, stuff like the waiting for Coop and Ed and Norma payoff.... you kinda miss context for all sortsa stuff.

Anyway of course I'm biased. Guess I'd say if you HAD to skip something I agree it shouldn't be the first season and if you did want to launch her into TP S3 at the very least FWWM is mandatory viewing.

    My 2 cents

  13. Man, really love the synths/rising action that hits around 2 minutes into this piece, moving through the section where the beat drops out. Also like that the end here is beatless, and strips things down to the base melody. I had a visceral, emotional reaction to this. It truly moved me.

I could see adding something to the end of this like you're thinking, maybe some sort of chime/mallet sounds w/ a lush delay? However, could also see you pruning this a bit and shortening everything up a bit. As is, think it's great - again, it hit me in my heart, which (to me) is the most important thing. ?

  14. Love the bit around 2:47 where this turns into the audio equivalent of a cronenburg movie. OK, that's a bit overstating it, but it was an unexpected left turn into something ...darker than I was expecting.

I've mixed feelings about the ending. I kind of want this to trail off into something ethereal but it kind of does the opposite. It makes me uncomfortable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Overall, aces. Like that even slower stuff like this of yours sounds as good as the more hectic tunes.

    is this sarcastic?

Not at all. I just find the idea of having Mullholland as an in flight movie amusing (bordering on the hilarious). Like, imagining a cabin full of people held captive w/any Lynch film? Tickles me. Oh, gah, like, what if it was an intercontinental flight and they did a Lynch marathon? Peoples faces would melt off.

Its a bit diff nowadays w the movies being self selected to a degree and on the seatbacks. Sort of loses the charm of the in-flight communal experience. Also, makes the idea of lynch on the flight slightly less amusing (but only slightly)

what i mean by this is theres no sense of excape or adventure in which the audiance is participating in like LOTR (lord of the rings) theres always a breaching into another place and its vast enouth to inspire the viewer. Theres nothing like that in lynch's MD.

thanks for the reply. I see it more like groundhog day as shifts. Doesn't really shift like the way you want it to. That said i'm not dissing Groundhog Day.

Look, its not the worst film out there. I might watch it again if they have it on a plane or something. But other than that. No.

I soooo want to fly on whatever airline is playing Mulholland as an in-flight movie. Particularly if they still presented them as forced viewing for the entire plane....

This is free on prime and I definitely would have scrolled straight past this if it wasn't for that del Toro tweet. Intrigued now.

FWIW when I saw this (what is now years ago) it truly moved me. It helped that I went in with 0 expectations though - going in expecting this to be something other than a very weird, indy take on horror is going to leave you disappointed. It's much more a meditation in love, infatuation, and maybe sacrifice and mortality. I legit cried though, it kind of broke my heart in the best way possible.

I'm pretty emo tho, so totally up my alley

*runs to to bedroom, slams door*

*puts on new Taylor Swift album*

    *weeps loudly*

  18. Actually going to go the opposite here. I quite like the variation, think you could even do more to break it up by adding a bridge section  (just a thought) - though I'm extremely ADD so I like a lot of activity.

Oh also wanted to say that the goal of finishing a track a week is inspiring. Recently been chatting with a variety of people about this (working on quantity as a method of continual improvment vs getting stuck on one ot two tracks .. or even just the idea of one or two tracks but not doing anything). Anyway, just wanted to say props and the results here show that this is a good approach.

Oh also also: my father taught me a poem when I was a kid you want to hear it?

  19. Actually finished it a bit ago, but deserves (another) mention: Devs - spectacular. Hovering around one of my fave things ever, stuck the landing in the last episode in a way that I didn't think was possible. No spoilers, just going to say to say I constantly vacillate on how I feel about the last part in the best way possible.

Recently finished watching Legion. Hol-EE crap. If I were to pick a show to rank purely on style I think Legion might be up there as the tippity top one. I had watched S1 ages ago and enjoyed it, but feel like S2 elevated the show to another level. S3 does some amazing things that, in a way, also pick at similar themes to Devs (but in a different way). Also, I rarely smoke these days, and this show had the unique effect of making me feel like I had while watching it, even though I hadn't. Very strange, but think it speaks to the power of the audiovisual experience (the sound design on this show is as amazing as the visuals).

  20. FYI, jazzb7 for some, but Danielewski released three scripts for episodes of a House of Leaves television series. This was after, apparently, talks fell through at a major streaming service. He decided to test the waters of interest. . . they are very good, very HOL so. ..  yeah, if it's your thing, def worth the 9 bucks. I only played Doom Eternal, but if you like Dark Souls, then I'm pretty sure either one would work for you.

Even though I managed to finish it, Doom Eternal was a bit over-the-top for me personally, not to mention being sullied by at least two major unexplained plot changes from Doom 2016. And the platforming/parkour between arena brawls felt out of place to me for a Doom game. Plus you're super limited on Shotgun ammo. But they did improve the Plasma Gun. Not sure if I'll play it again though.

But that's just my personal take. It felt a bit polarizing to me overall, but there's still the possibility that you'd enjoy it more than I did.

Cheers! I ended going w Sekiro. So far, it's great. Punishing at times, but not surprised - never actually played any From Software titles but I know Jedi: Fallen Order borrows liberally from the play mechanics, so know it's a matter of deep learning mixed with reflexes that carries the day.

I think what has sold me is the atmosphere. There is something that feels very deep and ancient about the setting - in some ways makes me think of team Ico games, or, perhaps, playing through an anime.

Love that the game defaults to Japanese as the spoken language too.
