  1. splitting layered kicks into different frequency bands and processing the high end with some verb or delay to give space parallel compression does wonders lately, i have been finding the root note of the song and adding a very short sine at the lowest frequency (the app "music math" will let you know how notes relate to hz). mix that sine into your drum signal
  2. there are certainly tricks to be used (multiband compression, sidechain w/ compression or lfo) but, sub-bass is really straight-forward. keep it centered and keep it relatively even. sub frequencies have an important influence on the energy of a song but, when you think of a "super fat crazy awesome" bass sound, you are more than likely thinking low-mids or mids. you can split out your bass sound into separate eq bands and process the low-mids - mids with some width and excitement but, keep the subs clean. fx outside of compression and eq are likely to muddy things without audible results in the mix. as far as compressor settings go for subs, 0-12ms attack, 100ms release, 3:1-5:1 setting....don't try to rely too much on any prescribed setting. use your ears and study up on compression theory.

  6. thanks for the quick and thorough answers. the one i purchased is modded with the Atomic kit. from what i have seen, not many of those mods seem all too useful. the boost is ok, distortion is unneeded as i would much prefer outboard or pedals... the MarOS features are excellent, i will definitely be installing that after a few runs with the native firmware looking into the x0xlarge upgrade, i think i will see if the programming fits into my workflow as is. this will be my first 303 type synth and i have no preconceptions as to how it "should" play. thanks for the information, regardless. definitely a consideration going forward, especially with the add-ons to real-time programming. that is always a massive plus i will probably throw the pot in simply because that is an easy fix and an extra knob (who doesn't want that) there was a bit of debate between the tt-303 and the x0xb0x but, the deep catalog of alt. firmwares and mods for the x0xb0x are what tipped the scales.

  10. i posted my latest on Your Latest Creations subforum, "Audio and Video for the Arturia DrumBrute through guitar pedals", though it is not a fully realized song yet. working on finishing it up this week and next. i recently migrated to a hardware based studio setup and am trying to make purely electronic music w/ minimal vocals. my completed songs to date would probably seem out of place here so i am holding off on sharing until i get some idm-ish stuff out!

  13. of course, in simplest terms it is all a matter of frequency, dynamics and panning musically you have something really good going so master the space and you'll be somewhere extraordinary!
  14. just listened, nice stuff bro. the arrangement pulled me in hard at 2 mins. i would maybe consider teasing the bassline in the first portion :20 to 2:00, or adding some one-shot sounds to keep things spicy also i think stereo image is nice on a bassline but your wobble bass is set too wide low frequency content is not easily perceived when set wide in a stereo image and a biting bassline can lose energy if panned or stereo'd too much a good way to trick listeners into hearing a wide fat bass is by splitting or layering the bassline, example: take your bass and copy the signal to two tracks put a hi-pass eq on one around say 300hz put a lo-pass eq on the other around 300 hz (just a number it will be different depending on the sound) apply your width and fx to the hi-pass'd portion of the sound. that way your low end stays centered and present and you get the width you desire to keep things cool. overall, good stuff tho thanks for sharing bro
  15. busses are a crucial part of keeping your project organized both visually and aurally. busses, sends, returns and auxes are all terms used to talk about routing and processing audio signals the term bus is very broad and describes a channel that allows for different signals to be routed or processed together your desired signals are sent to the bus, often to be processed (comp, eq, fx), then go onward to the destination (i.e. output) the most ubiquitous phrase, i find, is "drum bus" wherein you are sending your various drum signals to one destination, your bus, where they are processed together think about this example: you have your drum sounds on separate channels: you process your kick channel with comp and eq, your hats with their own fx, clap, snare etc. but, the parts are a bit disparate and you need some glue to hold the pieces together...Use a BUS! send all drum tracks to a bus and process accordingly if you want to learn about auxes, sends, returns go ahead and ask!
  16. the db is amazing, such a great value. i read a bunch of asshats on youtube complaining about this and that but they do not understand that analog drums need to be pushed around a bit!
  17. any decent microphone uses an xlr connection and is balanced. what leads you to believe your mic is unbalanced? i own a couple of vintage, very shitty consumer level mics that use tip sleeve connections. it is rare tho seems off topic but, to add to RSP's post: an option for long unbalanced runs would be a DI: http://www.radialeng.com/jdi.php you will want one designed to handle line level signals preferably with a pad for line level db reduction you can then run xlr out (balanced)
