this is more like a filmed 'performance art' piece. 2 women are trying to be as excessive as possible. one is on a large boat with a chocolate bow whilst the other is a runaway in some kind of commune

where they basically cavort all day and enact the birthing procedure. lots of characters seem to be symbolic of something (or someone). everything is very theatrical, loud and over-the-top.

if you're familiar with pan's people, then you're half way there.

    See post below

  2. Yeah the TR-8 has 808 and 909 sounds stock. And you can upgrade it to get 606/707/727 sounds. I love the TR-8 personally.

edit:  And I just couldn't click with the Drumbrute. Loved the individual outs, loved the sequencer (really loved the sequencer, actually), loved BD2 (BD1's not half-shabby either but BD2 has a nice 909 quality, imo). Hated the rest of the sounds. Toms/Congas require a ton of processing to get them sounding strong, and the snare just sounds like a rusty trombone version of a brostep snare.

and dammit...this new Hum album made me pull out my You'd Prefer an Astronaut CD last night and the CD is missing from the case. hate it when that happens...so now I can either dig through hundreds of CD's looking for it (as I may have drunkenly put it in the wrong one at some point) or go download it somewhere...

OT but still hilarious. In the insert for You'd Prefer an Astronaut. My doppelgänger is shown in profile view (won't say who but anyone who knows me personally, if you see this you'll know).

And agreed 1000% on Betty. I personally still like Meantime more but the drums on Betty are all-time great (pro tip:  the opening of "I know" is some of the best drum sample fodder you're ever gonna get, literally "When the Levee Breaks" quality).

Hum and Failure tour incoming when?

Holy shit if that happened one of my best friends growing up would probably have an orgasm on the spot.

I was lucky enough to see Hum live (Downward is Heavenward tour) and no surprise to anyone, they are amazing live. Very tight, they looked like they enjoyed playing in the same band together. "I Hate it Too" was damn near as good live as on record (that's basically me giving as high of praise as I can).

Hum fucking rules. There is no bad album. I will be checking for this.

    Do you really believe that?

With the amount of unjustified killing of innocent people by the police in the United States, does that matter? Or do you want to play "gotcha" all day and spot hyperbole in inappropriate places?

  6. Oh I certainly don't think that fight or flight can be eradicated (or should it be, for that matter it's a vital component of human nature).

I should put more emphasis in that post that police don't even attempt to use non-lethal force anymore. Between that and changes to training tactics that have removed more direct engagement.

^ I interpreted the "people are shit" quote followed by that pic of all the people and honestly assumed that it was about not liking people. my mistake.

No worries. I forgot I had said that. That line came from my idyllic and utopian vision of raves being these positive places (I know it's naive), and then seeing a) people being selfish/not respecting a pandemic and how they impact it, and b) all that garbage (I also come from a culture of everyone cleaning up when done/not trashing a natural location).

Any sinister shit that happens at raves bums me out.

genuinely curious, why depressing? I mean if you don't like humanity at all I get it, but I've always enjoyed going to horse race tracks.

    This is an earnest response.

    1. I find horse racing to be a form of animal cruelty.

    2. The lack of distance between people when that photo was reportedly taken (March 2020) shows that an in-progress pandemic will not be taken seriously by so many people.

    3. Not sure where the not liking humanity part comes into this.

that's it. we can sit back and debate what went wrong and how it should have gone, but when put in the situation they were in with all the stimuli thrown at them at that moment (and that they had to make split second decisions on), we really can't say with 100% certainty we would have responded differently. training and experience are of course what make someone better at their job, and just judging from their looks and how in shock they seemed after, both of these cops appear to not be seasoned veterans.

my take on the shooting is the cop saw the guy pointing and attempting to use the taser on his partner and about to escape, and his brain interpreted it as the cops were about to "lose". I don't believe he was trying to kill him and probably thought he could shoot him in the leg or something, but yeah, wrong decision to pull the gun and fire at that moment. and I also can't help thinking that in that parking lot with numerous people sitting in cars watching the whole thing, the cop probably felt more pressure and didn't want to look like they just got their asses kicked and lost the suspect, so he did anything he could to "win" in that moment.

armchair QB - what he should have done was gotten up, chased him down, and if the suspect outran him then call for backup.

Nah that's not it. There have been so many retired cops who have come forward and made it known that police training has taken away direct engagement with a detainee in a direct parallel with the rise of firearms in the United States (and by osmosis, everywhere else). Several point blank saying that new police are afraid of *any* physical confrontation with a detainee. That is a terrifying change in police behavior over the years.

Couple that with the fact that non-lethal weaponry for police was a very popular discussion as recent as less than 10 years ago. Now that discussion is a non-starter for police (mainly due to police unions, which are cesspools).

So not even accepting the potential of using weaponry that isn't intended to kill, combined with the "stimuli" you describe being a fear that has been increased directly from a result of police training. That is not a justification for a cop shooting someone running away.

I'll stop here but yeah, the notion that using a gun is even remotely acceptable in a situation like this when other means haven't been attempted first and there are no bystanders who have been harmed is wrong.

  10. Bump

So I've had a job working on a Covid-19 Contact Tracing project since April. This job has me working 7 days a week/13 hours a day. As a result, the show above was the very last time I got to even mix. Needless to say...that sucks.

That pt. 2 mix I posted is good for the record.

Why do people fight cops? It's not going to end well no matter what you look like.

The correct question is why do the cops want to fight people who aren't a threat to anyone. The problem is a lot of innocent people don't want to fight the cops, but the cops choose to fight (and sometimes kill) them. And there's a trend of this happening to black people in extremely disproportionate numbers and for reasons of pure ignorance.

There has been a tacit acceptance of this for the entire history of the police in the United States. It should never be accepted. There is a collective awareness of this that only gets louder and more numerous.

That's interesting; are you sure they use the term in the Tarkowskyan sense and not just as a more general term for "exclusion zone" or "fallout zone"?

There are definitely times where the term "zone" is used w/o any reference to Tarkovsky. But there are other times when it's obvious that it's used with double-meaning (either by the word "Zone" being capitalized, contextual usage, and once even the Strugatsky brothers being directly referenced).

I still need to read that book by Geoff Dyer. Been meaning to, thanks for the reminder!

i believe the ending is a warning about our rapid advancement in industry and technology. the stalker's sojourns into the zone have left his daughter a mutant. his wife tells him her marriage has been joyless and had she known this was her future, she would have chosen a different husband. the stalker too is left unfulfilled- like an automation in bed.

the impending sound of the train that shakes the entire house is the rapid movement into a more technologically advanced, yet soulless future. the fallout from all this advancement doesn't give us exactly what we want and even that comes with a caveat.

    Spoiler

I agree with much of this reading. It's obvious there is no joy within that family upon the Stalker's return (or before his departure, for that matter). The daughter's condition being a byproduct of her father (not to mention she's called "Monkey", implying a potential lab experiment).

I've had similar thoughts regarding the train in the final shot. With that said, I'd argue that reading implies a certain impulsiveness on Tarkovsky's part. To include Ode to Joy in the dissonance of the moment is very much in line with Tarkovsky's insistence on mystical elements that tie nature to the human spirit and its output. Ode to Joy acts as a rebuttal to a separate/conflicting striving from humanity (progress/technology). Admittedly, this thread in all of Tarkovsky's films (save for Andrei Rublev and Mirror) has always left me a bit cold. It does here, too.

I guess it could be expanded to the moving glasses on the table. The glasses are a reflection of this chaos and conflict surrounding this girl and the world she lives in. But she seems to learn control after a glass breaks...

stalker is about a guy who takes people into the zone- an area that has been affected by "something like a meteorite". the zone changes, paths alter. once inside the zone, one cannot go back the way one came. beyond this area is the room where any request will be granted. at the crux of this reward is the question of how well humanity knows itself. a previous stalker was granted millions when his request for his brother's life to saved was deemed to not be his true self-fish intention. as a result, he killed himself. a writer, a professor and a stalker go into the zone to seek their own fortune.

this is a film that needs to be experienced to be understood, and felt. heady stuff

My current job has taken any free time away, except for getting to smoke and read a bit before falling asleep. I am currently reading Voices from Chernobyl. Everyone refers to the "Zone" around Chernobyl. At the same time, the word choice obviously came from Stalker. Then to go deeper, and realize that when these people use the term "Zone" to describe the Chernobyl fallout, they're not just referring to the exclusion aspect, but several attributed the same magical qualities as found in the book/film.

Curious for your thoughts on the ending.

watched this ages ago and it left a very unnerving feeling again. revisited again last night and i can say: the story is now clear to me.

    10/10

Love love love this movie. Also the only film where Pasolini didn’t use Tonino Delli Colli as his DoP. Interesting contrast.

^ Innocent black people have actually been murdered by the "black lives matter" protests so far

By who? If the answer is The Police well they were already being murdering black people in their homes (for DECADES) so strength in numbers, right?

I'm really interested in watching his other movies but they're like 6 hours long ffs... Have u seen any other ones u wanna recommend?

I am a Lav Diaz devotee so yeah, I recommend them all (well, everything after Burger Boys). They are long, but they are excellent.

I'd personally recommend starting with the stuff after Norte:  The End of History. Specifically The Woman Who Left, then Season of the Devil.

A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery is probably his best work but fair warning, it's 8 hours long. I really hope that Batang West Side gets a rediscovery some day.
