  1. AOTY for me, but admittedly haven't listened to much new music. This album feels very familiar to me. In a good way. I've been falling asleep to this album for days now.  Very cohesive despite tracks being recorded years apart. I wonder how many other great tracks she's sitting on.

Didn't want to muddy the water but this is the same for me. That song is essentially perfect in my eyes.

edit:  As an aside, everyone should check the side project band Helen. Fuzz pop that's just great, don't really know what else to say.

Headache is exceedingly good, hard to pick a favorite though. There are other good collaborations. Mirroring - Fell Sound, Xiu Xiu and Grouper - Growing into Veins is probably the track that got me into Grouper.

yo, this album is fucking good!

second half is very replica/r+7/uncut gems ost for those who were worried.

i still can't get into that one weeknd tune though, and i don't think i ever will, but it's cool cos everything else is rad.

Agreed, and surprised you're the only person that brought up Replica as tracks like Answering Machine, Imago, and Wave Idea fit very much in that universe. I would add that some stuff even sounds like fully fleshed out Eccojams (Eccosongs). Anyways, defeinitely liking it but not in ways I expected to. Needs more listens

Hmm, shouldn't you be the one explaining what has made you subscribe to this notion? It just seems a bit ridiculous to me. I mean, just because they had today's technologies at their disposal doesn't mean they'd have to make use of every single one of them ... Kraftwerk are not officially retired and are still touring btw, even if the current shows have been postponed. So they would have every opportunity to incorporate this sort of technology into their music. I have been to a couple of their gigs, but no autotune so far. Lol.

Lastly, their latest studio record, Tour de France Soundtracks, was released in 2003. Autotune was well established by that time. However, no traces of it either on that record or on Expo 2000 (1999). I think it's just a question of style.

    Lol.

One thing is that they used vocoders everywhere, one of the only technologies for vocal manipulation back then. Auto-tune, whether you like it or not, excels at making the voice sound artificial and 'robot'-like which is exactly what they were aiming for. Kraftwerk were pioneers in their heyday, but their sound and technique was rather cemented by the 2000s. I don't think anyone would try to characterize that album as being innovative. Does that really need explaining?

  4. Not really trying to be intllectual. Just saying that if kraftwerk was contemporary they would most definitely be using auto-tune, and any other modern processing tools available to them. I do get a vibe from stuff that is channeling early electronic pop music and imagining what it might sound like if there weren’t limitations like hardware, pre-midi sequencing, etc. and also mixng in some recent influences like producing for weeknd, theatrical composition for uncut gems etc. IDK but it sounds really good to my ears, and I can’t fathom why any of you are complaining about trap vocals. Y’all a bunch of amateur critics.

  5. Agree that the trap argument is dumb. It's perhaps a shame that trap is so closely associated with autotune and processed vocals, but it's kind of OPNs shtick to repurpose tired and expired musical conventions. Ever heard of vaporwave? Dude basically invented it. I for one love the vocals. Feel like I'm listening to the modern equivalent of Kraftwerk or something (philosophically speaking).

  6. It's leaked. There's glimpses of goodness. Some of it feels like a pop version of Stretch, Mequetrefe is a personal standout. S/t vocals, Bjork and SOPHIE feature on a few tracks. Overall pretty meh though. The impulse to skip to the next track is strong with this one.

  7. I understand the comments saying it's a bit of a mess. My theory is that the title/theme is an admission of that. Auto-biographical maybe. The Ecco/Harvest/Excess/Bondage conspectus seems to describe the trajectory and various soundscapes Daniel has explored over the years. For example, I think Manifold and Raycats are a refinement of his early material. I don't think it's arbitrary that Juno-60 are heavily featured on these tracks. Toys 2, myriad.industries, Warning feel very r+7 to me. The vocals are an amalgamation of Games, ANOHNI, G.O.D., etc. This dude is literally brimming with ideas and has stretched in so many directions over the last decade: Eccojams, Games / Ford & Lopatin, ANOHNI, Good Time OST, touring with NIN. I think 'bondage' could be interpreted as feeling stifled as an artist. Wanting to go so many different directions at once. This album embraces that, and by doing so manages to tread some new territory in the process. I think it's one of his finest works tbh
