I spent thousands of pounds on music in my life. Something really neat about the latest album being available at the press of a button for almost peanuts. Folks can argue about Spotify as much as they like but I paid my dues many times over. I still sometimes pinch myself at what a nifty brilliant tool Spotify is. Not the whole, but a large chunk of the music universe at the tip of my fingers for a tenner a month. Amazing. Anyone who complains about Spotify must be just young and never forked out minor fortunes for double cds, plus a bus fare, plus the risk that (because you have never heard the god damn thing) it might be a total waste of time and money. And also to be able to curate your own playlists blending individual tracks from different genres into your own unique sonic story. Spotify is fucking ace. But yeah I'd be happy to pay a little more, or perhaps some method of giving something extra towards younger or up and coming artists.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I too have spent thousands of dollars as a teen and young adult, so definitely feel like i’ve payed my dues. I stopped buying CDs in 2005 and haven’t looked back. Also,  I’m neurodivergent af, so something abt just being able to press a button and have music to listen to in bed, while cooking, showering and going for long walks at night is second to none. Playlisting is the second big draw, as I believe having certain tracks play after the other really creates some sort of magic, changing the environment around oneself. Its become a tradition now to review my year and tell the story of the subsequent months as a playlist - really a therapeutic activity. I do think abt buying vinyls in the future when i can afford it and have the space, but for now Spotify takes the cake :music:

  4. I finally sat with this album while i peeled ginger at 5 this morning. I’m agreeing w a lot of folks -  i’m also in love with the back half of the album a lot more than the front half

    • I think both Auto & Allo and Long Road Home are cute
    • Absolutely love that verse and breakdown at the end of The Wether Channel - it’s genius
    • Not crazy abt that weeknd track - not a big deal that it’s there either
    • Standout track for me is Lost But Never Alone - it’s fucking gorgeous - really pleasantly surprised w this
    • Nothing’s Special is also similarly gorgeous - wish it went on for a lot longer

I agree that this would work better as a double-album, really would like for some of these tracks to go on longer and the mood of the second half extended - not sure if Danny is capable of that though, not sure how I feel abt that

  5. I voted SIGN cause of the liquidy feels, but I think I need to sit with PLUS a while longer - def has some scruffy bangers. Think i’m gonna try the listening to both straight through in a playlist method  :catsalute:

Download from Bleep. Second half the album much better (IMO). Too earlier to make a final judgement but these later pieces lean slightly more (dare I say it), to earlier OPN. Second half of "Tales From The Trash Stratum' is awesome. 'Wave Idea' is also a fine piece.

I almost wish I'd never heard the earlier released tracks now as it all works better as a complete album listen. Even the latter vocal track 'Lost But Never Alone' sounds okay with its 80s glam rock guitar sample . 'Cross Talk IV / Radio Lonelys' has that Synclavier sample from Michael Jackson's 'Beat It' hidden away there too.

    So he pulled an M83?

This is a truly bizarre opinion. Rob and Sean have always come across as sincere and down-to-earth and yet you're accusing them of spending the last decade maintaining a lie - based on what? Even if they could have made all of their recent output with a regular DAW (debatable), why the hell wouldn't they program their own stuff in Max? Writing music software isn't that hard - I've done it, and I'm an amateur hobbyist with a day job - and it's obviously something that appeals to the sort of people who make nerdy electronic music. Who do you think uses tools like Max or develops new synths/effects anyway, if not people like Autechre?

I’m new here, but I had to block that dude. Annoying for no good reason

I ended up waiting until this past Saturday for my first listen to SIGN. I had a few buddies over and sat outside in my backyard with a raging fire and did some star photography. The warmth and colors of the fire as well as staring at the stars lent very well to the overall mood of this album (as well as various substances :P). I obviously had read a bunch about it and was keeping up with this thread but I definitely took away my own views from this and further listens. First impressions were just that it was crazy warm, lush and hyper-detailed. M4 Lema, Metaz form8, schmefd 2 and r cazt were the immediate standouts for me. schmefd 2 was without question my fav after 1 listen. It had such a dark and nasty groove. The whole time through the album, I couldn't decide if this was Autechre super zoomed out, or super zoomed in. It has this very microscopic detail to it, but it sounds like it is enormous at the same time. Autechre have always been experts at creating these little mini universes and this one just felt like the warmest and most humanistic to date. M4 Lema set the perfect tone and was beyond interesting to start. It felt like there was just tons and tons of tiny little pockets of intricacy meshing perfectly with the huge synth and pad washes throughout the entire hour. By reading a lot about this, it sounded to me like this was going to be a very ambient album but I found it so chock-full of rhythm. Everywhere. It's just executed in a different way. Overall, just another fascinating dive into a new realm of ae. There are a handful of bands that I have been listening to for over 20 years now, but Autechre's creative journey has been the most rewarding to follow along with, by far. Cheers.

If there’s an Autechre album that wears its Coil influence on its sleeves, surely it’s got to be Oversteps and not SIGN.

tbh I kind of wish there was more follow-through with the Oversteps compositional/melodic method, as much as I love everything that’s come since.

Totally agree, was actually just thinking of this - all that plucky instrumentation... they definitely could’ve taken that sound further too. I can only assume that they actually did and it’s one of the many things locked up in their vaults

  10. Just finished my 5th listen and starting to see all the details hidden in the mix. Can confirm that there is absolutely nothing simple abt this, which was a pretty laughable statement. It’s rhythmically complex - abt as complex as anything else they’ve programmed in their vast labyrinthine repertoire. Also noticed that a lot of tracks which I initially thought of as beatless, actually do have beats - they’re just muted or buried in the mix :cat:

He said everything that’s bad about the album but so little about what’s good! My grandmother could say what’s bad about it very easily!

another thing that this kid doesn’t understand is that a great artist never asks himself “what should he do” but instead “what shouldn’t he do” and that’s what’s ae all about regarding their release. Sign is just something that they haven’t really released so far and at the same time something they enjoy themselves.

the fame’s gone to his head

  12. I dig the fractured nature of this track, in terms of the first half being very chill and having an after-hrs sorta feel, paired w the beats coming on towards the end

In terms of the length, I don’t have an opinion on that, as my tracks tend to be entirely improvisational jams w myself. When i’m working on something of a longer duration, I solve that by just adding more things to it, to keep it interesting for myself - not a prescription, just my working method

Also, I clicked on this because it said tired - definitely identify w the mental exhaustion, just getting back to working on stuff after months of stagnation, myself, so kudos for getting back into the swing of things

/ I like the dreamy instrumentation. When the drums kicked in, it felt riotous ✊? would love to see the drums expanded, if anything, as they are a really good anchor
