  1. It's almost the end of January. Take down your goddamn christmas lights!
  2. Just gave this another listen on headphones and there's a depth to it that isn't immediately obvious. They are masters of creating a sense of space in their tracks and somehow that makes these more minimal arrangements more substantial. There's some ambience in it, it's not just beat+bass+vocal. And it's not just a straight up repetitive beat, there's a fair bit of variation. Vocal is cringe af tho not gonna lie haha it sounds like something DMX Krew would do ? I dunno if the remix is better than the original or vv. The original fits the vocal better because it takes center stage and everything is tightly wrapped around it - whereas the remix feels more like a "normal" or even oldskool kind of track, vocal at normal pitch etc, which is cool in its own way but makes the imperfections of the vocal itself a little more obvious.
  3. I think they're probably continuing on their usual path of doing whatever they want lol
  4. Fucking tortilla mask got a spit-take ?
  5. What's the exact source for this? I know he shared a bunch of jam snippets at one point but is it confirmed that the fully released tracks didn't get any additional input from Rob?
  6. The Toronto 2001 soundboard is fuckin amazing. I nearly got evicted once for blasting it.
  7. Also just to clarify I wasn't being flippant in my suggestion to read the AAA thread. I would consider it a significant document. Sean and Rob modestly share a ton of valuable information about their own work and their opinions about music and the scene etc from the perspective of two very important figures in it. And in terms of the "IDM community" well, you get to see a ton of WATMMers jizz all over themselves and ask S&R to name various pieces of equipment, and of course ask some pertinent questions as well. It's a lot to read in thread form but I think someone around here condensed it into a spreadsheet or something like it.
  8. With all due respect, yeah I can't help but think the whole premise is flawed from the get-go just for the fact you're using the term "IDM" at all. But that's academia for ya. If you have a bit of fun in your pursuit of a stamped and framed piece of paper that hopefully gets you a respectable job one day then kudos to you. (This coming from someone with a B.Mus in Jazz Studies lol)
  9. Yeah this. I suggest you read the AAA thread as part of your research.
  10. I hear ya. I wouldn't consider myself someone who thinks he should stick to his earlier style tho. I am all for artists changing and evolving as they see fit. And I actually quite like a lot about the aesthetic of his recent stuff, minus certain elements. My issue is primarily with the vocal sounds/other elements he tosses in that just ruin the flow/vibe for me personally, and how frequently it seems to happen. It's so close to being awesome but there's always something that ruins it. I'll admit I might have a personal bias against vocals anyway, not "on principle" but just as what naturally vibes with me. And I mean some of these sounds are really ridiculous and unnecessary, they don't add anything of value to the music. I read that bit about him hating the process of writing ETBOY too (probably somewhere on this forum). It's interesting to learn stuff like that, but sometimes it's better not to know. Our perception as the listener can vary so much from the intention/experience of the composer and that's just a fact of music making. I personally love that album, probably more than anything else he's done, but I would never say he "should" return to that style or that nothing he's done since is any good just because it's different. Rather my issue is that he's always so close to nailing it but then makes a wrong turn somewhere along the way. Personal taste of course.
  11. In the age of Zoom, fashion only matters from the chest up
  12. Maybe this one will actually be good But no seriously, I tried listening to Death Peak the other day and had to turn it off a few tracks in. I've barely touched the last couple of soundtrack albums, so to give the benefit of the doubt they might not be all bad - one day I'll check and see. But my issue with Clark is that he'll get off to a great start but then throw in some element (usually a human voice of some kind) that just shits it all up. Weird moaning noises and stuff like that, or just pitchy bullshit. I don't get it, it sounds like he doesn't ever bother to get an outside opinion on his tunes and just follows a whim. He has so much potential, and when he's good he's really good, subforum-level good, but man he just makes some cringey choices. Maybe this is why Warp dropped him? Edit: lol after posting this I went and read the Death Peak thread. Looks like everyone here loved it so ? Also it was interesting to read his own commentary on the process of making the tracks. Still, it's kinda sad when you have to read a composer's manifesto to be able to enjoy and appreciate something that otherwise sounds like shit (my same issue with a lot of avant-garde academic stuff). But reading it did make me want to give the album another chance. Every once in awhile I go back and give his newer stuff another listen. I honestly think I'd dig it all if there were no vocal elements; nine times out of ten that's what ruins it for me. Example: Sodium trimmers. What a banger, what a thick-ass beat, but then what the hell is that noise? Anyway, tl;dr. On topic: here's hoping the new album is decent!
  13. Turns out I was wrong about column thirteen being the same tempo... it's not. Very close tho. I think its harmonic complexity makes it a poor candidate for mashups anyway.
  14. Always nice to see some appreciation for this one. I think it gets overshadowed by other Quaristice tracks especially the ones with multiple versions. It definitely belongs in this thread, such beautiful production and arrangement of sounds. It's one of their best ambient tracks imo and during the Quaristice era it was my falling asleep music -- too bad it didn't get an extended version!
