SWANS

until recently, the only full Swans album I'd listened to was Filth and I was kind of under the impression that they just went full-blast with the sound, punk style, not caring too much what the end mix sounded like. watching this video really opened my eyes as to how they actually engineer their sound for max clarity and impact. Gira is mental. probably some of their earlier stuff: Filth, Cop and Holy Money. Filth absolutely destroys. Hah, yeah I always kinda ignored the old stuff because I just thought it was just obnoxious loud without any depth. Thanks, I'll check those out but I need alot of time to let Swans delve into my mind! Too bad I just missed them playing near my place just a few days ago, that would've been one hell of an experience...

SWANS

Was a good watch, motivated me to finally check out the new album. Listening now and it is really great so far. Although I really like Swans for years now, it takes a long time to get into the albums. I only have Children of God, Soundtrack for the Blind and My Father... What are other albums I am totally missing out on?
3. Yes indeed, I just kept hearing this track in those sounds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIPPcPzbOcI Anyway, good episode, a nice buildup for next week I hope. Finally more then 2 storylines that are weaving together now
4. Weird, yesterday I had the sudden urge to listen to a few albums of Coil, haven't listened anything by them in months. He is sending coil signals!
5. Not so secretly! He´s very much into all kinds of electronic music, also into Bochum Welt/Rephlex etc. He said his favorite Joy Division track was the remix Squarepusher did for Love Will Tear Us Apart, he made 2 Klaus Schulze worship albums under the name Neptune Towers, in "Until The Light Takes Us" he talks about how he likes Monika Kruze, he did play live techno sets under the name DJ Ebola I think it was and he also posted this a few months ago: Have not heard that! I've been slowly checking out some of his newer mixes as DJ V.K.O.M. (vice and a few blogs are hosting them). Peaceville records is reissuing the first Neptune Towers album. Interesting sidenote...I read the uber-creepy dark ambient group Aghast used the same synthFenriz used on the Neptune Towers releases. And speaking of tattoos Fenriz has one of Dogbert as well... LMAO. "Yeah, I have a comment. FUCK YOU. Ya know." Perhaps that in a nutshell is why he's the only remaining original member of Mayhem. This documentary the clip is from, Metal A Headbanger's Journey, started my interest in black metal and, ironically, in retrospect I've realized how limited and bias it's portrayal of the genre is. It was literally: 1. Vemon, Norway and OH SHIT Varg murdering Euroymous, church burnings and Dead's skull necklace 2. Gaahl being melodramatic as fuck (see below) 3. Drunken Mayhem interview (see above) 4. Way too short Enslaved interview, vague conclusion and transition to Alice Cooper casually dismissing black metal in general. Granted, Dunn was covering ALL metal genres in one documentary but he still received so much criticism he added a much better segment on black metal as a bonus DVD feature. Props to him for that. And then again, black metal is often so knee-deep in fan mythology, media sensationalism and ironic silliness that the segment is arguably quite fitting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQJqZFUell8 Actually, he just released his first electronic mix this month, just spotted it now! http://afistinthefaceofgod.blogspot.nl/?zx=912a668832721a6a or http://www.vice.com/read/a-fist-in-the-face-of-god-presents-dj-fenriz-the-human-touch-vinyl-mix Includes an interesting interview with him as well in the download, so it's on topic! Talking about that metal documentary, it´s overall just him making his teen wet dream come true and while it was a good watch, the black metal part was really bad as you said. You pretty much covered all my criticism for that movie (although I must express my frustration for the lack of real key figures, instead they focus on that loser Gaahl). It's just American sensationalist journalism, but I can't exactly blame him ofcourse. Until The Light Takes us did it way better, especially with all those extra material. I honestly can't remember that extra DVD on that Headbangers Journey documentary, I remember watching it when it came out though.

And this:
7. - there´s a serie of these clips with other artists (Kraak & Smaak, Rude 66, Duplex, etc. But Legowelt wins) - Alot of Red Bull Music Academy interviews, especially with Cosey Fanni Tutti, Theo Parrish, Legowelt, Ectomorph (with a VERY interesting story about Detroit history). But my favorite remains Moodymann, he just takes over the whole concept of how that interview is set-up and just tells his story. I mean, "doin' his thang". And I regurarly enjoy alot of Frank Zappa interviews when I'm bored, there are so many on youtube. And ofcourse...

Rare AFX Blog

Summary: Jk, cool story's bro! I was at the STRP gig that year as well, I do still remember alot from that night, the visuals at the ending, Luke Viberts, Squarepushers en Vsnares set, one bizarre night that was. The sets with Hecker were really chaotic and I do prefer him just solo (saw him with Hecker twice and solo also twice).
9. Fuck me that Tik and Tok track is amazing, it's now on for the I think 12th time. Every time when I think, well, now I have just about heared every Rephlex artist, then I get a smack in the face by watmm and discover 10 (well, maybe 4 after 'researching' this topic, but it feels like 10) more. Thanks edit: is there any label that consistently (well, it's coming close) puts out amazing music for 20 years? Rephlex is just the best music label ever imo.
10. Yeah, I have it somewhere - I don't think the quality is great though, as I recall those were some of the first MP3s I ever had, and they were probably 128/192 at best. I remember playing these on my Creative RIO (remember that Mp3 player?) on my home stereo... I'm sure somebody has the unedited tape of the original broadcast... Thanks for the reply :) I've been looking for the complete original broadcast for yeaaars now but I've never seen anybody with it, I guess you're our only hope I also still have the 128kbps versions of the other tracks from the Kazaa days.
11. The only thing I (and everybody but Joyrex) don't have is the We Have Arrived version of the Peel Session. Call me a obsessed completist, but I'd still like to have that version! I asked Joyrex numerous times about this but I don't think he read all of them, so maybe this time. Joyrex, you have the complete peel sessions (including John Peel talking around it?), could you please find it and share it?
12. Yeah, lots of great stuff there! One of my bands was selected band of the week two years ago even, and we played the Live Evil festival (only Fenriz' BOTW bands) the same year. Apropos your avatar - I saw Virus again last week and it was freaking great. Wow, what a coincidence, may I ask which band that is, I am bound to at least heard of you before then. That Live Evil line-up was amazing (so was the last one), that must've been great! Virus played last week again? Damn, I'm still kicking myself in the head because I realized Virus played here in the Netherlands the day after the gig. Good to see they are performing that much lately, I have to witness them at least once. I did see Aura Noir a few month's ago though, one of the best gigs I saw in years.
13. I wonder if anybody here also follows Fenriz of Darkthrone and his band of the week initiative, but he's one of the best music-mentors around these days. I've discovered so many great bands through him (The Devil's Blood, Jex Thoth, Pagan Altar, Obliteration, Nekromantheon, Beastmilk, the list is endless, the money unfortunately isn't). I followed it since day one with his black metal compilation years ago and then the tips on the Darkthrone myspace and all his other compilations, and I've yet to hear a band of the week that dissapoints me. Don't expect black metal though, maybe some really raw 80's death metal band that is labeled as black metal these days, but most of the bands are in the heavy, thrash and speed style of the 80's. Also, triggered drums are VERBOTEN. If you want a good impression of this, definitely check these compilations out (he published 12 in total): http://afistinthefaceofgod.blogspot.com/2011/01/fenriz-metal-merchants-festival-dj-set.html?zx=b47fafdf63aff67c http://www.thrashhits.com/2011/08/download-fenrizs-metal-merchants-mix-vol-2-for-free/ The mainpage for this is http://www.bandoftheweek.net/ but the facebook page is updated more frequently.
14. I can't believe I forgot this one (although I just pretty randomly picked out a few favorites that immediately came up): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSApntqABDU
15. Ah, yes, finally! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UELBKfSdlEs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAw2pDZNCus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXQc6r7RL4M&feature=related Ofcourse the whole Streetcleaner album, and the Peel sessions around that time are great too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHhQfKa-E6Y
16. Amazing! Didn't know both artists, thanks again watmm!
17. I was/am a huge fan of the Godflesh albums, I only liked Heartache from Jesu, and the first full-length, stopped following Jesu since then. Before those I was a big fan of old Napalm Death as well. Recently I heard tracks of the Lull and Scorn projects, both sounded amazing. Where do I begin with? Cool story, how were the Immortal guys weird, other then just drunk? Wasn't it their cup of tea so to speak?
18. Isn't this the original? http://bamalovesoul.com/2010/11/14/late-pass-45-q-tip-work-it-out/
19. Thanks veeery much for the trouble of recording and uploading, sounds great! Was it that easy to get it recorded (was everyone "ok" with it)?
20. hey there, im interessted of those two sets. have anybody new links for that or is it possible to upload it again, cause the links went down : would be very nice, thanks Same here. Very interested in a Wagon Christ live recording! Any other WC (soundboard) recordings available maybe?
21. I saw the Quaristice special edition and I had money, but I thought it was too much, so I just bought the regular edition, then the special edition was sold out an hour later. Damn, I was stupid. Now I can't pre-order this one because I bought a couple of tickets to their show in Amsterdam, just before this announcement! Oh well...
22. where? The artwork of those was between all the others in the link I posted above. But the link's now dead and I didn't save anything, so it's gone now. They'll probably put those releases on the rephlex site soon I guess. I guessed that they would remove the artwork sooner or later so here it is if anyone is interested: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LNQMDRFR Smart move! Thanks!

24. That's a coincidence, I post the link ( http://www.rephlex.com/content/releases/ ) to the artwork on the site, few days later it's secured and the large images are gone. Too bad.
