Also, let us not forget that this isn't an authoritative poll - Richard has veto powers, so winners might still lose. What if everyone got to vote for their top 40, knowing everyone else's top 40 will only have 20 winners max? Musical chairs style - more winners than trophies - maybe that would reduce incentive to vote with the majority. This would give Richard a richer dataset (pun intended) to work with, and he surely has some of his personal favorites in mind already. If some of his favorites are not in the top 20 and their votes are skewed extremely low, it would be hard to know which of those the fans really do like.

that's precisely what he said re final votes - "It will give me a good basis for compiling something, i wont compile it exactly as people have voted, just use it as strong start to compiling it myself "

  2. regarding the mix of different music... agreed, but i wouldn't expect any different from a 'best of' style vote tbh.

encourage you guys to start putting together SC playlists that make up more coherent 'releases' of similar material. will be adding a feature soon that lets people import, share and vote on their SC playlists - at the absolute least having a community effort to organise the dump into virtual albums will make it WAY more great to listen to.

  3. now you guys are discussing this... be keen for opinions!

i've been discussing this with rich, in terms of being able to see the results versus doing it blind.

having the votes public absolutely will be causing some bias, but having done some stuff in the past similar to this i strongly suspect that this bias will level out over a high enough level of voters. consider the three options people will take: most people are just going to vote for tracks they like regardless, with a smaller percentage voting either for the tracks displaying highest OR lesser loved tracks to give them more love. i believe it will even out, esp given people can come back and change their vote.

having this stuff public too makes the site a TON more interesting... and will encourage more discussion around it, which means more voters. i strongly suspect that having these votes public will actually lead to a 'top 20' which is way more representative of what the fans want.

on the other hand... there's definitely an argument in doing this blind, BUT it makes the site a ton more boring. right now I'm visiting it regularly to see the latest votes (and even adjusting my own votes as I remember killer tracks). i think people will forget about the poll quickly if there's no interesting information coming from it... which will probably lead to less accurate results.

also been throwing around the idea of 'starring' tracks or similar - like there's a secondary rating system for maybe 5 tracks you can use to mark your absolute favourites, and only rich can see that. so a mix of both worlds.

    thoughts, guys?

  4. This is a solid release. Honestly hadn't heard it in 6+ months after my initial repeated listens on release - when I saw Mogwai here about a month and a half back the album was played in full while everyone was settling into their seats. Reminded me how good it was.

  5. How many people are logging in but not voting yet? There is a reasonable % of users who haven't voted yet.

If that's the case, all good, its a dynamic voting system after all - just want to make sure people aren't thinking the site automatically saves votes before clicking "save".

  6. humm... i voted, but when i log in later i cant see my votes anymore, and have to reconnect with sc again... how am i able to change it then?

EDIT: ah just saw the "save" button... that means my votes arent even saved, not just for me, but also in the poll? will do again then

did anybody else have this issue? this is intentional for technical reasons - and because i wanted saving to be a very specific action - but i can probably make it save the track selection each time you add/remove a track. i had hoped i'd made it obvious enough one would need to click the save button... but if it's a common issue..

    Feedback def welcome!

The website doesn't have a favicon yet! ;-)

Will get the favicon sorted. Glad people like it. Lots more to come.

this guy (and his team) above are responsible for the design, btw - mine looked pretty basic in comparison before he suggested to help out - so huge thanks!

  8. ah, good spot - will investigate.

i've just uploaded a new version with some fixes, i've also tied the site to the watmm.com URL now. could somebody who has voted before ensure that they can logout, login OK, their votes still show up? expect it'll be fine, but won't hurt to verify changing the URL doesn't break the account linkage :)
