  1. After one listen of the single it sounded like a mix of Steinbolt and 303 Scopem Hard.
  2. Dunno. But if he is then I bet Kode9 is a bit cheesed off - especially so if theres (potentially) an album ready to go. Burial's stuff outsells everything else on Hyperdub by orders of magnitude and I imagine helps to keep them financially afloat.
  3. Havent got any Teenage Engineering gear myself but one synthfluencer I watch on youtube got an OP-Z then after about 6 months the buttons started double triggering and he had to stop using it. Ive read about it bending in the middle as well. They didnt seem to learn their lesson with the new K.O.II either.
  4. One of the first big hitters announced this year, can't wait for this one. Embryo and Perspective both kept up the high standard. The guests on this suggest a kind of stately, grand edge, with her soundtrack/stage work possibly having a greater influence on the sound.
  5. https://planetmu.bleepstores.com/release/417388-jlin-akoma https://jlin.bandcamp.com/album/akoma?label=3050966550 22.03.24 1.Borealis (ft. Björk) 2.Speed Of Darkness 3.Summon 4.Iris 5.Open Canvas 6.Challenge (To Be Continued II) 7.Eye Am 8.Auset 9.Sodalite (ft. Kronos Quartet) 10.Grannie's Cherry Pie 11.The Precision Of Infinity (ft. Philip Glass) About this album Jlin’s detailed and meticulous exploration of rhythm’s inner and outer reaches has made her one of the most distinctive and recognisable voices within both the electronic and new music worlds. Her compositions are consistently appealing and have an accessibility to them, yet often defy expectations. She exists within her own locus solus - no matter the collaborator, no matter where sounds ultimately lead her. Whatever the situation – from composing the Pulitzer Prize shortlisted ‘Perspective’ for Third Coast Percussion, to ‘Godmother’ her AI-powered collaboration with Holly Herndon, Jlin always expresses her outlook to the fullest. Her new album ‘Akoma’ sets a new benchmark in her personal road map, not only since the album features guest appearances from Björk, Philip Glass and Kronos Quartet but for her continued sonic persistence and resistance. Jlin does what Jlin does and it’s beloved across genres, across scenes and across generations. ‘Akoma’ is a new entry point into her sound and a new approach for both those who have been following diligently and those who are just now entering her world. So how did she get here? Here’s a rundown for those looking for the facts. She was both a math nerd and a steel factory worker. She got inspired by Footwork and started making tracks with mentorship assistance from RP Boo and DJ Rashad, but her music was far from typical for footwork from the get-go. In 2011, she released her first track ‘Erotic Heat’ on the Planet Mu anthology ‘Bangs & Works Vol.2.’ Fashion designer Rick Owens heard it and invited her to soundtrack his Paris Fashion Week show. Already before an EP or an album Jlin was in new cutting-edge territory. And it hasn’t stopped since. Everyday Jlin wakes up early and clocks into her home studio working hard on new music. Her discipline and craft-like approach means that those who would try to copy her sound simply can’t get to the level she is at. Since ‘Erotic Heat’ she has released two bold albums, 2015’s ‘Dark Energy’ and 2017’s ‘Black Origami.’ She has also released her soundtrack to Company Wayne McGregor’s dance piece ‘Autobiography’ (2018) and most recently (2023) the mini-album ‘Perspective.’ She’s remixed µ-Ziq, Factory Floor, Ben Frost, Max Richter, Björk, Martin Gore and others. She’s collaborated with Holly Herndon and the late SOPHIE. She’s worked with visual artists Kevin Beasley and Nick Cave. She composed a string quartet for Kronos Quartet and performed with them live in a tribute to Philip Glass. She also recently completed a tribute to Sun Ra with Kronos. ‘Perspective’, her very well received percussion work for Third Coast Percussion has further opened doors for her creating music for chamber ensembles. She’s even thinking of one day writing an opera. She had a residency at MassMoca museum earlier this year (2023). She’s performed live at Pitchfork Festival, Unsound Festival and too many others to mention. She’s also worked with an HBCU Marching Band, Indian dancers, Company Wayne McGregor and renowned choreographer/MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham. There’s more but you get the picture - she’s working in contexts and in ways that few of her peers are able to. ‘Akoma’ is the next step - all these paths have led to this. We encourage you to tune in. se paths have led to this. We encourage you to tune in.

    Stone in Focus

I think quite a few contemporary reviewers said the same thing. Its def got the right mood, (only the piano dates it to the Druqks era.) I know Richard said he subsequently lost interest in ambient, but theres a few bits and pieces scattered around his discography that roughly revisit the same area. He has said on soundcloud he has SAW III half-written - which I assume means he has a bunch of eerie beatless tracks he likes earmarked for potential release. I am surprised he never did a full album of musique concrete considering how much of a big fan he is - I suppose the closest thing we got to one would be CCAI pt2 or the Mt Fuji Tape.
  7. Well I believe people's skills/character/expertise/knowledge etc. are not grown and developed in a vacuum, but in a biased world with various obstacles or advantages for different groups, and the more work we can do to level these rules the better.
  8. They are trying to stay relevant in a modern and changing world, with a younger and more progressively minded audience. They correctly know old geeks will (hate) buy it all forever irregardless, - they need to open up new markets (girls). Sci-fi is a mirror to the contemporary world, it cannot keep reflecting the years 77-83 forever. Thats why Andor was pretty good cause it seemed to be telling a story about creeping fascism. The other stuff you list (that i recognise) is just rehashes of the same story. Or rehashes of other peoples stories. (Mandalorian/spaghetti western, Yuzzang Vong/the Borg). I thought the Last Jedi was deeply flawed but at least it was trying to breathe some new life and direction into a tired story. Rise of Skywalker was an embarrasing capitulation backwards. I think this new one will probably try something totally different again and die on its arse.
  9. Star Wars has long been the site of so much rage and misery. Remember how much grief George Lucas got for the prequels? Now its all linked in with toxic culture war shit and incels/chuds. Whats the deal with so much opprobrium? Is it cause of people's misdirected emotions? I have no faith any new Star Wars movies will be good - but not because theyve now hired a brown woman to direct it, or not because of Kathleen Kennedy or Disney but because the well has run dry - theres only so many times you can tell the same story about space wizards defeating space nazis. They have already had guys like Ron Howard, JJ Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan people with tested story writing/directing experience and look how that turned out. Face it dudes its already dead.
  10. Never seen one irl. Didn't get it at the time cause I was a poor student and didn't see the point, I was happy to wait for the cheaper repress. Shame if it is a bit cheap looking, didn't Grant/Richard say they ended up selling at a big loss due to some fuckup with the production costs?
  11. Not sure if anybody has posted these up here yet... the background images for the Drukqs page on aphexstores. A selection of the artwork and some personal photos of Richard from that time period:

    Stone in Focus

The ones specifically tagged as SAWII Unfinished tracks were Stabbing Interview, Road Shimmer and Chopped F Beginning. Th1 [slo] is up as a bonus outtake on the aphexstore, and we can assume Red Calx is also one. As for the others I would speculate the likes of Off Key [bicycle wheel], Lush Ambulance, [water], [taut], ssnb, Just Fall Asleep, Slothscrape, funnel, sline were all probably produced around this time and have a similar mood and sound palate to SAWII. Maybe a few others as well.
  13. I'm Gasing hard for a Digitone too. Having so much fun with the Model Cycles over the last year or so, loving the Elektron sequencer and really want to get deeper into learning FM. [the Cycles is basically just blending between presets.] I dont use a computer any more so no operator. I've been messing around getting some incredibly horrible sounds out of an old Alesis Micron but eventually Im probably going to cave in.

    Stone in Focus

I would have booted off White Blur 2 to make way for Stone In Focus on the CD. It might risk unbalancing the record, smoothing away its paranoid edges, but the track is just too damn good to be a curio.
  15. The new PJ Harvey was ok, sort of quite folky and eerie - better than her last record anyway which was standard generic rock. Not up to the level of White Chalk/Let England Shake tho for me.
  16. I only have the CD version. Here is one of the inner images:
  17. Cool find. I'm glad they went with the throwback Designers Republic style artwork instead cause it suited the music a lot more. This wouldve been good for the Computer Controlled EP though seeing as it has a kinship with Drukqs (which had RDJ's handwriting all over it.)
  18. There are some good choices here, the Analord 3 art, the Orphans rainbow ribbon, even the SAW1 back cover all look pretty good on t-shirts. Lots of baffling stuff as well - whats going on with that re-designed Aphex logo? Overall pretty bogus move stealing this much of other people's work, I can't imagine it'll be up for too long.
  19. Black Dog - Psycosyin (Peel Sesh) AFX - AFX Acid 04 Ceephax - Acid Le Soken 808 State - Flow Coma
  20. DJ Trystero - Castillo Tujiko Noriko - Crépuscule I + II Fennesz + OZmotic - Senzatempo Tirzah - trip9love??? Nondi_ - Flood City Trax Teresa Winter - Proserpine Flesh & The Dream - Choose Mortality Jodey Kendrick - EDM X &Y Joanne Robertson - Blue Car Dream Dolphin - Gaia (Selected Ambient and Downtempo Works 1996-2003) Lee Gamble - Models Face of Another - 808 Sunset 90
  21. Most of the Ae records cost like £90-100 after a few years of being out of print. Confield and Draft were going for that much last year. As for getting represses of Untilted onwards, who knows? Probably - but I'd expect it will be quite a long time before they get to Exai. Poor old Squarepusher fans still waiting for their vinyl reissue program to get past the first album.
  22. Genuinely thought you were taking the piss with those tracknames, but nope.. theyre the real ones.
