  2. I find it to be liberating really. You only have a set amount of time, and can't go back to get too fussy about things. You learn to make decisions and commit and move on. :) That's the best part!
  3. Creating something everyday is multifaceted challenge which presents a lot of opportunities, as well as hurdles. Some issues are easy to imagine, where as others appear only after a direction has been established. Based on last year's work I knew a few issues that present themselves in advance. Last year I hosted the entire project on Tumblr, which I found out about halfway through was quite insufficient. It was simple enough, but there are issues with audio on Tumblr, and sometimes the artwork would vanish mysteriously. This year I put more planning into the platform, and went with wordpress. From there I can publish to many platforms at once, as well as create a feed for a podcast. A little planning goes a lot way. Limitations With Daily Ambient I have created a framework with limitations, rules, and sensibilities which act as a structure from which to build. These limits and rules need not be strict, but having them in place does a lot to aid in the construction of new work, and to glue the separate pieces together to form a cohesive body of work. They also help to eliminate the "blank page" effect. That paralysis felt when starting a new piece of work. Each day tends to evolve from the previous in terms of process. Inspiration Inspiration is much less an issue than you might imagine when working inside a framework. Creativity can be wielded very deliberately and effectively when you have a solid direction to jump from. This is the strength of the framework approach. Once there is a "universe" to work within interesting opportunities reveal themselves. Time A big challenge is simple time allotment. I have a very young kid, so free time tends to be hard to come by. The work tends to be done in the evenings. Over the course of last year's project, I was able to get the process of writing, rendering and publishing down to about 1.5 hours. Most of that time is spent writing. Artwork The artwork is a challenge in itself. Last year the idea came about very organically. Over a few evenings I recorded live ambient tracks, and thought it would be cool to make a tumblr page out of them. Tumblr offered a space for an image with the track and so I had to find something. An old harddrive had a bunch of images of doors I had taken on a vacation to Greece, and so that became the theme. This year I wanted to dig deeper into the possibilities , and so spent a few weeks trying different options. Again I wanted to create a framework which fulfilled several criteria. To be effective it needed to: Be quick to create. Nothing too involved or time consuming. Be open enough to afford experimentation. I didn't want to get sick of it or get backed into a corner creatively. Be interesting as a system. They all need to work together and feel a part of the same body of work. After quite some trials, I decided to jump from the idea of cinemagraphs in the "subtle gifs" thread here. I chose to stylize the clips with a 2 color limit to simplify, but also to give each a more impressionistic feeling. The result is flexible, but recognizable. The video clips are easy to make. I can take a camera out and get 10-15 in an outing, and then pass them though a few filters and render a gif. The result is quite interesting and simple. I hope that you all find the project to be interesting and inspiring! For me it's a great way to dig deeper into a specific direction in music, and art. Stay tuned for more from Daily Ambient. - Ryan
  4. Just started Daily Ambient again!

  5. Thanks! I'll be making a cinemagraph for each day. :)
  6. So I've start with Daily Ambient 2013! The first day is here >> http://dailyambient.com/2013/06/01/day-1-soaking-rain/ It's been raining non-stop all day and I couldn't resist sticking the field recorder out on the window ledge for a bit. :) I'll try to post each day here, but if you'd like to follow along on a different platform, here are a few I'm pushing to. https://twitter.com/dailyambient http://dailyambient.tumblr.com http://www.facebook.com/DailyAmbient https://soundcloud.com/dailyambient Enjoy!
  7. So again this year I will be creating a new ambient track every day. I'll be starting in June, which is really soon! I'm hosting the main project at www.dailyambient.com but I'll also post stuff here, as it seems a lot of people read the watmm blogs, and because I think you guys might enjoy it. :) I'll also be starting a podcast, and pushing everything to soundcloud, so I'll post those links once they are up as well. I started this project last year as a way to push myself creatively, and to set a challenge to meet. It was tons of fun, and I generated a lot of great material. I look forward to the challenge once again. You can check out all of last year's music here : http://dailyambient.com/c/days/2012/. I hope you all enjoy the project! - Ryan
  8. Just realized the tumblr is quick dead. This works better. >> http://tellmesomethingnice.com/category/music/dailyambient
  9. Thanks! I'm actually looking for someplace to submit my stuff. I'm going to be making a new track every day this summer. I did it last year too. :) I thought it might be the kind of thing a blog would do a writeup on. Here's the one from last year. http://dailyambient.tumblr.com The whole thing (75 tracks) is also on archive.org here > https://archive.org/details/dailyambient-2012 Thanks for the tips!
  10. Do you guys/gals know any good ambient blogs? Places where people look to find new music?
  11. Just bought a patchbay, to have effects and synths handier to experiment with. And then I realized that it doubles, or triples the number of cables needed. :| I now need 45 patch cables to hook all my stuff up. :P Gonna be a long weekend with a soldering iron soon.
  12. haha don't ever invite your mother over for tea.
  13. haha man cave really says it all. Simply a room in which no female has any influence. :D
  14. I just scored a man cave / studio room in our building. It's not too big, but plenty big for a little studio space. So pumped. I'm scraping off old plaster, and will be repainting, and installing some bass traps and broadband absorber things in the next few weeks. Coolest part of it all is this giant 110 year old wardrobe thing, which is like 3 meters tall, and has a roll top front covering. It's just wide enough to fit the larger synths I have. :p Dust proof, lockable, and it's basically a giant multi-tiered keyboard stand. After I find a patchbay, I'll have the perfect setup for this year's daily ambient project. :) yay! I'll post pics when I can.
  15. haha in what way could you possibly be limited with that.
  16. lol that was unintended. What I get for typing and talking to someone at the same time.
  17. I know what you mean. I have only one setup too, and I'm often working on a few tracks at a time. I suppose I'm just anti-anal that's all. I'm all about the quick and dirty way. :)
  18. haha where's that. :p
  19. IMO speaker placement is really not something to get hung up on. Especially if you are a composer/producer, as the only real time you need a good stereo image is in mix down. As long as you can hear timbre clearly it's really not a big deal during composition. I used to have one on the floor and one on a shelf at head level, and my musical ideas didn't suffer in the least. :)
  20. time to get off the internet! </end knob jokes>
  21. well there are plenty of knobs right here on watmm!
  22. I normally read non-fiction, but do audio books like a motherfucker for fiction. I just read The stuff of thought by Steven PInker. All about how language is a template for how the brain processes information. I also just finished the ENTIRE dune saga. It's like 4 weeks straight in audio haha.
  23. Engaged Touches (especially the expanded version) and An Immensity Merely To Save Life are great. You can check it all out here: http://celer.bandcamp.com Also, not enough for love for the 12k Label on WATMM: http://youtu.be/VWvBFythttk http://youtu.be/-6_OAEZnSDI http://youtu.be/Dd4gCenHUkQ http://youtu.be/XyNBEzrkUXI http://youtu.be/rGtrX48NFGc wow, I'm loving this label.
  24. I just hang out in EKT. Don't give a shit about the other forums tbh. EKT is great though.
  25. Then I wouldn't go for Reaktor or Max. You might end re-inventing the wheel instead of doing music. In my humble opinion, limitations enhance creativity while endless possibilities annihilate it. If I were you I'd go with a pretty minimalist kit instead, and work its limitations. I used Reason for 10 years, knew it upside down doing lots of weird CV/Combinator stuffs... and was considering switching to Max for years. I finally went for Ableton Live / Five12 Numerology combo with very few yet carefully chosen synths and effects, and couldn't be happier. Do you want to understand how a synth works and how to patch it to your will, or do you want to know how to code it ? These are 2 really different things IMO. ya I'm also going down that road now. IMO max is great only if you have a really specific idea of what you'd like to do with it. Other wise it's like buying a thesaurus to write a book. It won't give you any new ideas, but is great when you need to accomplish something specific. Autechre have gotten their style down to such a fine level that can benefit from that approach.
